Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

@BoogieVoogieAllNightLong I don't remember Teddy Tots either but I just googled and found an Instagram post saying that they were like the shiny coloured cube things that are part of dolly mixtures, but were subsequently replaced in the range by Bunny Tots which I definitely do remember

@bendmeoverbackwards so few people seem to remember Puffa Puffa Rice, it was amazing!

Off-topic but I don't suppose your username is a Victoria Wood reference?

BoogieVoogieAllNightLong · 05/05/2026 08:23

@PutYourSpecsOnJean Thanks, no memory of those at all!

I'm still mourning something very short lived from about 1980, pretty much the same time as toast toppers arrived on the scene. It was a thin, square frozen sheet that you put under the grill on a piece of toast and it was called Grillers. Don't remember the spelling but there was a gorilla in the advert. I was a pizza fiend so I loved the pizza flavour but alas they didn't last long. There was originally a pizza flavour toast topper too that went by the wayside but it wasn't a patch on Grillers.

PutYourSpecsOnJean · 05/05/2026 08:26

@ballroompink Pim's are made by Lu and sold in France in several flavours, you might be able to find them online?

Chocolate cup cakes with thick smooth and flat icing on top. They were in fluted foil type cases. Delicious and I miss them. I think they were Lyons? There were always little bits of the icing left on the case which I would lick off!

You've reminded me of the Fabulous Bakin Boys ones, the lemon and orange ones were lovely.

This thread is making me sad. Kind of. In a lighthearted way. 😆

At least we were able to have all the delights of yester year..70s kid.

westcott · 05/05/2026 08:37

United biscuit bars. Used to have these in my school lunch box. And to find any without the biscuit just pure choc!!

Yes it is! I was (still am) a huge VW fan and miss her every day 😢

Birds add boiling water semolina 😢

Omg you could get this in Tesco, only place I found it, I actually saw it recently on the shelf but I stopped buying it coz it doubled in price! I used to buy it weekly. I've just looked on the app and it's gone :(
Maybe still check just incase... Coz I definitely saw it in our local one just a few weeks ago.

Mint feasts, 1980 cherryade panda pops, Start cereal, golden grahams.

My DH still laments the loss of Start cereal!!

godmum56 · 04/05/2026 20:35

@ConstanzeMozart I think the "cold" thing was because they had glucose powder in them. I had a phase in puberty when my blood sugar used to drop like a stone, no idea why and docs never found anything but for a couple of years, I used to have to carry glucose tablets around with me. They have the same coldness thing.
On from those little cups, does anyone remember a sweet in a tiny coneshaped plastic cup/glass....by tiny I mean around an inch and a half high with a tiny spoon linked to the cup. The cup was filled with a solid creme in laters, chocolate pink and white. I am doing up an old dollhouse now and collecting miniature things....wish I had kept some of the cups....

Glucose powder, eh? I'm another one wondering how, having grown up in the 70s and 80s, I still have teeth/am alive Grin

I don't remember the sweets in a tiny coneshaped plastic cup/glass. I'd love to know what they were.

Oh, me too! I was listening to her song in the car only last night and thinking it's been a while since I watched any of the stand up.
(My name comes from dinnerladies which I rewatch annually, I have a date worked out to start series 1 which means I can watch series 2 on their original broadcast dates!!)

bendmeoverbackwards · 05/05/2026 08:50

That’s a lovely thing to do @PutYourSpecsOnJean love dinnerladies

Look up Hannah Brackenbury - she performs VW songs and also writes her own comedy songs

Fedupsequin · 04/05/2026 13:57

Oh, and fruit Club bars!

Yes! And it's the only Club they've discontinued. Haven't RTFT yet, but Toast Toppers anyone?

BoogieVoogieAllNightLong · 05/05/2026 09:00

I've just remembered something else, those frozen packets of Ross oriental express stir fry. Especially the prawn one, which had water chestnuts in it! It had a very distinctive taste that I couldn't identify and I loved them!

Yes, they were Lyons - 4 in a pack. The made orange and lemon ones too which were my favourite! Also McVitie's Mallows were delicious!

Lemonandlimetrees · 05/05/2026 10:01

Bassets fruit allsorts - the ones without liquorice. Devine!

BIWI · 05/05/2026 10:03

I worked on the development and launch of Time Out, back in the day when I worked in a marketing consultancy. The reason it was withdrawn/changed into its current iteration was that (I believe) it was too similar to another Cadbury brand, Twirl ,in terms of when it would be eaten, and started stealing share from what was deemed to be a strategically more important brand.

Which is a great shame as it was a really good product. The current version is nothing like it.

(I also worked on Fuse, but don't know why that was withdrawn!)

the person asking about Bath Oliver biscuits- Pretty sure I saw these at our fancy cheese shop here in Bath recently

M and s did a stunning redcurrant cheesecake in the 80’s/90’s so delicious.

They also used to do Summer Fruits compote in a carton, like the milk ones, it was lovely to just pour over ice cream, the quickest pudding ever!

Ovaltine bars. Think I last had one in the eighties. Was thrilled to discover Milo bars are really similar and stock up if I’m ever in Asia for work

oh wow that sounds amazing, I am gutted to have missed out on that!

Me too, every time I drive through the lovely village of Kimberley I can hear her saying my friend Kimburleeeeeeeeeee, when we were house hunting it was off our list! My all time VW favourite though is 'not unless sperm can get through a sash window!' from Dinner Ladies.
As you say, very sadly missed, I can still recall my shock on getting the 'guess who's dead' message from my daughter!

Were they not called Kunzle cakes? Running your nail up the flutings meant you still got the chocolate without it going sloppy!
