AIBU to wash my hair every day?

I wash my hair everyday. Sometimes every other day, but lately I’ve been doing it every morning.
I have thick hair but the roots get easily greasy especially now in my mid thirties (I’m 36, almost 37). I get sweaty at night especially when I’m due on my period. I wake up feeling disgusting unless I shower including my hair.
Is this too much?
I swim twice a week, most weeks too. So I’m washing it after that too.

Everywhere online it says it’s unhealthy to wash it everyday.

Does your hair feel unhealthy? Is it dry? Split ends etc?

MrsShawnHatosy · 28/04/2026 15:15

Your personal preference. I wash mine once a week, it’s very thick and slightly dry, I think it would get very dry if I washed it daily.

Dancingsquirrels · 28/04/2026 15:15

I used to wash my hair every day. I thought everyone did

After a conversation with a friend, I now wash it once or twice per week. To my surprise, that seems to be plenty

BendingSpoons · 28/04/2026 15:16

I wash mine everyday. Partly because it gets greasy quickly and partly because I don't like showering without washing my hair. Some stuff says it's bad for you hair. Other things say it's good to wash it everyday, as you are also cleaning your scalp. My hair is in good condition so I see no reason to change.

ohyesido · 28/04/2026 15:16

Same. I suffer with greasy hair, and the added stress of people who feel the need to comment on how greasy my hair is.

so I wash it every day and it works for me. I have no time for anyone who wants to lecture me about how my hair is greasy because I wash it daily.

if I didn’t it would be greasy and at least this way I don’t have to put up with people telling me it’s greasy to make themselves feel better

WhatDoRacoonsSay · 28/04/2026 15:16

It's your hair, do whatever you want with it.

youalright · 28/04/2026 15:17

I do my every other day but It does get greasy quick im similar age to you. I don't think it helps I have a really bad habit of touching it a lot

Namechangedforthisoneyep · 28/04/2026 15:23

Have you tried using a clarifying shampoo? Or changing your shampoo and conditioner?

Threesloths · 28/04/2026 15:27

I was my hair every day in the shower. I don’t like it to be unwashed

Catza · 28/04/2026 15:30

Do what you like. However, my personal experience suggests that the more you wash it, the greasier it becomes. I converted from a daily wash about 15 years ago when I travelled for six weeks and would be lucky to be able to wash my hair once a week. After I came back, I found that once and twice a week was plenty as the greasy scalp seemed to have settled nicely. I have very fine short hair too. Before this trip, I was daily hair wash convert. After - not so much.

SheDoesntEvenGoHerex · 28/04/2026 15:37

I wash my hair once a week! I will sometimes do a 'top wash' ( I wear extensions ) But not very often, its usually just one full wash a week!

Have you tried things like dry hair shampoo to last you a couple of days?

I used to be like you and used to wash my hair every single day ( pre extensions ) and it was really hard to stop!

I do find now my hair doesnt tend to get greasy very often.

If your hair is in good condition, it doesn't matter whether you wash it every day or not!

mydogisthebest · 28/04/2026 15:40

I have washed my hair every day since I was about 15. I am now 71. My hair is in good condition.

I like it to feel clean every day

Rosessmelllovely · 28/04/2026 15:41

I have thick, curly hair and I wash it with shampoo around once a week, maybe less. However, I 'wash' it every day with two conditioners, a la curly girl method. I use one conditioner to 'wash' and another to condition; it suits my hair and it's much quicker to do it that way than attempt to make it look nice without co-washing it.

QuintadosMalvados · 28/04/2026 15:44

I do too. I know it's probably not needed but it's absolutely ingrained now.
Trouble is if I've washed all of me in a shower the contrast between hair and body makes me feel icky.

I've got bottles of dry shampoo I keep meaning to try.

It would really save a lot of time and faff not washing it for sure.

First world problem obviously but since we're on the subject I'll say how I feel about it. 😁

MaybeIamJustABitch · 28/04/2026 15:44

I do every day Mon to Fri as I WFH and we are big into turning cameras on on calls. If I didn't wash it every day I would have to wear a hat given I have 'dragged through a hedge backwards' look after sleeping. 🤗

Clefable · 28/04/2026 15:45

I exercise most days so have to wash it, or I’d have smelly, sweaty hair! I don’t think it’s unusual to wash it every day. I’ve never had any issues with my hair so daily seems fine for me.

Justploddingonandon · 28/04/2026 15:46

I used the wash mine everyday and found it felt horrible and greasy if I skipped a day (though I don't think anyone else could tell). I always thought I needed to as have fine straight hair, but have now switched to every three days in the hope of my scalp feeling less dry and less split ends and while I had to work through the greasy (I did every other day for a while) it does seem to have settled. Hoping after a few weeks of this I may get to twice a week.

Domino211 · 28/04/2026 15:47

I wash mine everyday, can’t bear having a shower and not doing my hair, I just don’t feel clean!

I have tried over the years experimenting with cutting down washing and seeing if my greasy scalp adjusts and it doesn’t. Dry shampoo makes my hair dull and horrible so that’s a no go too.

I mostly wear my hair up so just dry the front and roots so takes me less than 5 minutes so no big deal time wise either

ArtAngel · 28/04/2026 15:49

I've always washed my hair everyday in adult life.
Quick wash and condition on the shower.
Short hair, good condition, it smells stale if I don't.

QuintadosMalvados · 28/04/2026 15:50

I'll also add that it looks better if unwashed and it's more manageable it's just the contrast between washed body and unwashed hair makes me feel icky.

It would be great to overcome this.

user1471457354 · 28/04/2026 15:51

Hairdresser here - I think it depends on your hair condition/scalp and if you are then blow drying and styling with straightners/curling wand.

Its not great to be washing your hair everyday but please make sure you are washing it correctly.

Always do 2 x shampoos and I would recommend a clarifying shampoo for the first one (I highly recommend the Aveno apply cider viniger one) and really scrub the scalp. Only put conditioner on the ends, and no where near the scalp.

If you are then blowdrying/heat styling, please use a heat protectent.

honeylulu · 28/04/2026 15:52

I wash mine every day, first thing in morning shower. I definitely don't think everyone needs to do this and I envy those who can make it last longer between washes. Mine gets greasy very quickly (and it also has a greasy smell after a day and a half, which I hate) and it seems to hold onto cooking smells and I don't really like smelling my dinner the next day. I also have greasy skin, waxy ears and am prone to sweating/BO so just can't skip showering full stop, I think it's just my biology.

I have tried very persistently to make it last longer. For about 5 years I washed hair every other day as people kept telling me it would adjust, but it never did. It sometimes looked ok in the morning but by early afternoon it gets lank and oily and I'd have to scrape it back into a ponytail to hide the horror.

I use a mild shampoo, just one lather and conditioner on the ends. It's quite long but provided I get it trimmed 6 monthly it doesn't look dry or split. I hardly ever use a hairdryer as it just dries straight naturally. I dont get a dry scalp or eczema or anything. My daughter who has similar hair also washes hers daily with no ill effects.

In short, washing every day is not unhealthy for my hair though it may not suit those with a drier scalp!

FlapperFlamingo · 28/04/2026 15:59

I always shampoo and condition my hair every day. It’s fine, I’m 60 and it’s never been a problem.

Ace56 · 28/04/2026 16:03

Another woman with greasy hair here! I wash every second day and dry shampoo in between. Is this something you could do instead of washing every day? I do it mainly because of laziness - it’s such a hassle washing every day tbh.

gloriahalleluja · 28/04/2026 16:04

I wash mine daily. I’m very oily both in skin and scalp. If I don’t, it doesn’t look that bad but I genuinely feel disgusting and greasy. I wish I didn’t have to faff around so much with it but I do it because of how it makes me feel (unclean) not what it looks like. On the days when I really can’t wash it until later (early gym or whatever) then I find dry shampoo before bed helps stop it getting too bad overnight.
