AIBU to wash my hair every day?

I wash my hair everyday. Sometimes every other day, but lately I’ve been doing it every morning.
I have thick hair but the roots get easily greasy especially now in my mid thirties (I’m 36, almost 37). I get sweaty at night especially when I’m due on my period. I wake up feeling disgusting unless I shower including my hair.
Is this too much?
I swim twice a week, most weeks too. So I’m washing it after that too.

Everywhere online it says it’s unhealthy to wash it everyday.

I wash my hair every day and have done so for about 35 years , since my early teens . Can’t see that changing anytime soon

PauliesWalnuts · 28/04/2026 16:08

I wash it every day. Sometimes twice if I'm riding to and from work. I do a lot of sport - swimming, running, cycle to work, etc, and it gets really sweaty (or just wet from swimming!).

I also have really curly hair and look like Sideshow Bob when I get out of bed. I could just wet it, but I'd still have to dry it, so, I may as well wash it.

SpaceRaccoon · 28/04/2026 16:15

I wash mine every second day, or possibly more in summer as I work out or run most days and it obviously gets sweaty at the scalp.

I wash mine daily, and it’s fine. 👍

Hairdresser here - I think it depends on your hair condition/scalp and if you are then blow drying and styling with straightners/curling wand.

Its not great to be washing your hair everyday but please make sure you are washing it correctly.

Always do 2 x shampoos and I would recommend a clarifying shampoo for the first one (I highly recommend the Aveno apply cider viniger one) and really scrub the scalp. Only put conditioner on the ends, and no where near the scalp.

If you are then blowdrying/heat styling, please use a heat protectent.

I have a short bob, does that mean I shouldn't condition it? It looks worse and is harder to brush / more frizzy if I don't.

PinkNailPolish2026 · 28/04/2026 16:20

I wash mine every day, I’ve done it for years as a I hate my scalp being even a tiny bit greasy.

SummerInSun · 28/04/2026 16:22

I also wash mine every day. Partly as I exercise most days so no choice as it is dripping with sweat. Occasionally I skip a day and then I spent the whole day feeling self-conscious about my greasy unwashed hair and wind up putting it into a ponytail.

NothingHereAnymore · 28/04/2026 16:27

I wash mine daily! Have done since I was in my teens. I don't think people always realise how much hair traps smells, anything from cooking to BO.
We had a lady at work who claimed she could only wash her hair every two weeks, by the end of the second week all you could smell in the office was her hair, you could also see bits of crusty scalp falling out of it. I will stick with daily thanks.

No. It means that's what that poster does.

I have long hair and, when I was younger, I only conditioned the last couple of inches. Now I'm 51, I do all of it but avoid my scalp because that's what my hair needs.

You do what your hair needs.

Frangle · 28/04/2026 16:30

It's fine, I asked my hairdresser once and she told me she does it too. I tried every other day for a good couple of month before I cracked, it never adjusted or got any better and I was sick of feeling gross 50% of the time. I also sweat a lot at night, I honestly smell like I've been to the gym if my period is due so there's no way I'm not washing it on those days

Angrybird76 · 28/04/2026 16:32

Its an each to their own thing. My hair ia very thin and would be like a fluffy flyaway cloud if I washed it every day. I wash it once a week and use dry shampoo in between. If your hair is in good condition then it obviously works

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 28/04/2026 16:38

I do mine most days and it’s in the best condition it’s ever been in. Occasionally I’ll go 2 days but never more than that unless I’m poorly.

AgnesMcDoo · 28/04/2026 16:39

I wash mine every day. It looks awful if I don’t

CeriseFlingo · 28/04/2026 16:46

I’d love to wash mine every day but I cba drying it.. so it gets done every Sunday and Wednesday.

Love the feeling of fresh hair, but I’m too lazy for it.

BrieAndChilli · 28/04/2026 16:46

I wash my hair most days - as others have said, I just don't feel fully clean if I shower and only wash my body!
I have wavy/curly hair and washing it resets the curl and I can leave to to dry naturally otherwise I would have to straighten it or add lots of product to sort the curl out.

Hairdressers always say what good condition hair I have so it cant be doing too much damage.

I wash my hair once a week! I will sometimes do a 'top wash' ( I wear extensions ) But not very often, its usually just one full wash a week!

Have you tried things like dry hair shampoo to last you a couple of days?

I used to be like you and used to wash my hair every single day ( pre extensions ) and it was really hard to stop!

I do find now my hair doesnt tend to get greasy very often.

If your hair is in good condition, it doesn't matter whether you wash it every day or not!

Are you me?! I have tape ins, my hair has definitely adjusted to once a week wash. Love batiste 😆

DrummondStick · 28/04/2026 16:49

I used to wash my hair every one to two days. My hairdresser told me that my scalp and hair were suffering and I needed to wash it once a week. I couldn’t last a week but I have compromised to once every five days, using dry shampoo on the last day. My hairdresser has noticed improvement in my scalp and hair. Washing daily was just a habit.

VickyEadieofThigh · 28/04/2026 16:51

Same here. It's part of my body so I wash it along with the rest of me during my morning shower. Been doing so for decades, my hair is in good condition.

Waterwaterwaterwaterwatercycle · 28/04/2026 16:55

Sounds fine - it's your hair!

I used to wash and straighten mine every day and it was fine. I do mine every other day now but that's because I don't have time to wash and dry it every day.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 28/04/2026 16:58

I’ve washed my hair every day for the past 45 years! It is a mess when I wake up and my scalp itches of not washed so it’s easiest just to wash it.

cloudtreecarpet · 28/04/2026 17:06

A trichologist I visited with my daughter said that it's fine to wash your hair daily if you want, it's not a huge problem. She said it was a fallacy to assume it was bad for your hair.

Obviously the shampoo you use and how you dry it and style it will make a difference, her preference was for wrapping it up in a soft towel for a bit, then letting it dry naturally.

youalright · 28/04/2026 17:13

People who say the longer you leave it between washes it stops being greasy but I think this is either a myth or only true for some hair types. I have bipolar and when im going through bad depression stages I've often not washed my hair for a week or more (sometimes significantly longer 🙈) and its made absolutely no difference to how long i can go between washes

RawBloomers · 28/04/2026 17:36

I don't now because I've got lazier, but I used to wash mine every day. It was always lovely. Hairdressers often commented how nice it was and then, when I told them I washed it they would tell me it wasn't good for it! Never saw the proof of that, though.

Wash it if you want to, adjust if you notice a change.

No you can still condition it, but just make sure you are leaving a gap of about 2 inchs from the scalp.

Same here. Not only does it itch, but if I don’t wash it immediately my scalp gets really sore and painful.

My DCs seem to have inherited very straight, greasy hair and also wash their hair daily. During lockdown my DS did an experiment and started washing his hair once a week. By the end of lockdown two his hair was still dripping in grease the day after he washed it. It made no difference at all!

I think some people are just naturally greasier than others.
