AIBU to wash my hair every day?

I wash my hair everyday. Sometimes every other day, but lately I’ve been doing it every morning.
I have thick hair but the roots get easily greasy especially now in my mid thirties (I’m 36, almost 37). I get sweaty at night especially when I’m due on my period. I wake up feeling disgusting unless I shower including my hair.
Is this too much?
I swim twice a week, most weeks too. So I’m washing it after that too.

Everywhere online it says it’s unhealthy to wash it everyday.

I have asked a couple of hairdressers about washing my hair every day and they all said it was ok to do so. One said "you wash your body and face every day so why would you not wash your hair".

Quite. It's perfectly fine.

PenCreed · 28/04/2026 20:24

I wash mine every day, despite having curly hair which most people say doesn’t need it. I asked my curly hair expert hairdresser about it, and her view was that it’s fine, my hair isn’t damaged, it just depends on how oily your skin and hair are. My skin tends towards oily so my hair does too. Like most things, it’s not one size fits all!

IwanttoWFH · 28/04/2026 20:25

I wash my hair every third day (wear it down two days, wear it up the third day then wash it). I have fine hair which looks fluffy on day one, it always looks better on day two.
My hair doesn’t get greasy really, but my scalp gets itchy/flakey if I leave it any longer.
I’m too lazy to wash and dry my hair everyday. Plus, it would seem a waste to wash it when it’s not greasy.

I’ve read that clean hair and a clean scalp is required for hair growth. Not sure how true that is.

FrLarryDuff · 28/04/2026 20:27

As I can smell greasy roots at 50 paces, if I had them, I’d be washing daily.

Dazedandconfused28 · 28/04/2026 20:29

I wash my hair every day, very occasionally ai skip a day - but my hair then feels very thin, lank, greasy & dry at the ends - I've never been able to settle into a routing of washing it less frequently

Cat250571 · 28/04/2026 20:29

I wash mine every day otherwise I feel dirty. It's not a problem to wash it every day.

You shouldn’t wash your hair everyday. You’re stripping it of the natural oils. Hair can be easily manipulated so if you wash it every day, it will need washing everyday. If you give it time and slowly reduce how much you wash it, you may be able to get it down to only being washed every 3 days or so. I’m currently pregnant and only wash my hair once a week and even then it’s not desperately greasy.

I’ve tried that. It doesn’t work. I’m just greasy. My hair is greasy. My skin is greasy. After 50 years, countless products, washing, not washing, nothing has stopped my inherent greasiness!

Backawayfromthesausage · 28/04/2026 20:58

I find this surprising, why do you need to ask how often to wash your hair. Wash it as often as you please. There are no hair washing police.

TroysMammy · 28/04/2026 21:00

I have to wash mine every day because when I wake up I look a cross between Doc Brown from Back to the Future and a gonk. If I dampen my hair down it doesn't look right and I'd be fussing with it all day making it look worse.

I recorded myself sleeping last week and because of restless legs I move around all night and am subsequently rubbing my face and head in my pillow.I

My hairdresser said I have a cows lick that doesn't just sit at the front but it goes along the top of my head.

redboxerclub · 28/04/2026 21:04

It’s completely untrue they it gets greasier if you wash it daily and can “train” your hair to be less greasy

I wash mine every day. Since menopause I can do every other day.

its fine and dry and looks dreadful unless wash and blow dried. Because its fine twisting no time

Stnam · 28/04/2026 21:06

l have always washed my hair daily. Never had any issues. I don't have to worry about stripping it of natural oils as it never looks dried out or gets split ends. I also like having clean hair so there is no down side for me.

Fleurdalys · 28/04/2026 21:43

Dirty hair smells worse than BO….
its like warm stinky sheep smell

MyDuvetDay · 28/04/2026 21:50

I wash my hair every day and have always done so since I was a kid. I have very fine hair and it gets gross greasy if not washed daily. Also, I blow dry it every day to give it plumpness. None of this seems to do any harm.

i am aware not everyone does this. But everyone’s hair is different so that’s fine. Do whatever works for you OP.

Nuttycoffee · 28/04/2026 21:56

Wash day miss a day wash day miss a day and so on.
Its down to what you want to do.

SeriousTissues · 28/04/2026 22:21

I wash mine daily. It used to get really greasy but since menopause, it hasn’t. When it was greasy I tried washing it less frequently but that didn’t help the grease. Now it doesn’t get greasy, but just feels weird if it’s not washed. A couple of years ago I tried not washing it daily for about six months - somebody suggested that it would do my hair good and so I tried it again, but it didn’t do it any good! So I wash it daily again. So, wash your hair!

Gigglydancybox · Yesterday 06:46

I have curly hair and wash mine once a week, it never goes greasy.

im sure I’ve read that over washing strips the goodness from your hair so your scalp has to work harder to replenish that and that’s what causes the greasiness.

personally i couldn’t be bothered with washing every day, however on hair wash day it takes me an hour from first shampoo to fully dry.

Doggodoggo · Yesterday 06:48

I find it really annoying when people say that washing your hair every day is bad for it or males it more greasy. It just doesn't. I have oily skin, including my scalp. If I stopped washing my face it wouldn't get less greasy, same with my scalp. I did try it for a long time over Covid (with my hair) and it was just rank.

Washing and conditioning your hair every day is good for it. Its the same as washing your face or having a shower and then moisturising.

People who say they wash their hair once a week and it isnt greasy, thats great for you. We are all different and have different types of skin. My skin and scalp are oily and I need to wash my face twice a day and my hair once.

I’m 56 and have washed mine every day since I was about 18.

cramptramp · Yesterday 18:32

I’ve got really greasy very fine hair. Always have had. I wash mine every day because it feels rank if I don’t. The only time I don’t is if I’m staying in all day.

LilyLemonade · Yesterday 18:37

I have always had greasy hair and I have washed it every day since I was in my teens, with the exception of pregnancy and to some degree post-menopause because it is now drier. My scalp is also drier now and I have a sense that slightly spacing the washes is better for the scalp - it feels more relaxed if there is a little natural oil. When I was young it just felt gross and rank, there was no way I could have skipped a day. I have always kept my hair shortish, partly for ease of washing.

Muffsies · Yesterday 18:56

I wash my hair everyday as it gets very greasy and my scalp gets flaky and itchy if I don't.

I use Aveeno shampoo which is gentle on my hair and keeps my scalp healthy. After washing I pat with a towel and use a serum on wet hair to keep the moisture in, comb and let my hair dry naturally. I apply rosehip oil 2-3 times per week before bed.

I have bra strap length hair and I have no damage or split ends. I think if you replace the oils and lock in moisture, and don't use heat drying, your hair can be very healthy with daily washing.

catlover123456789 · Today 10:38

When I worked in Central London, I had to wash my hair every day. The pollution, the heat, it left my hair looking flat and gross after just one day.
Now I work from home I wash it about once a week. I am also older so my hair doesn't get greasy like it used to.
I think how often you wash your hair is up to YOU, not the internet.

I was my hair every day in the shower. I don’t like it to be unwashed

Same.

I wash mine every day. I can’t get under the shower and not wash it, I don’t feel clean or fully relaxed. And I hate the feeling of Day 2 hair. My hair is very fine and takes a very short time to dry and style afterwards, the only thing I hate is that my colour doesn’t last very long!!

My hair is very thick, slightly dry and doesn’t look or feel its best until around day 3! My colour lasts a long time though, I get roots done every 6 weeks and highlights (just a few) every other salon visit. I also use sulphate free shampoo and conditioner, SLS strips colour and is drying.

Gardenimp · Today 11:02

I wash mine everyday, have been doing for 40+ years, since I was a teen. Otherwise it's greasy and itchy. In fact, if I wash it in the evening it will feel greasy again by mid afternoon next day, if I haven't washed it in the morning.
