AIBU to regret handing in cash found in a wallet?

Found a wallet with £200 cash in it on a train. DH made me hand the wallet and cash in at the train station. I’m so annoyed - yes it was the right thing to do but we’re struggling financially and there’s no way that cash is making its way back to the owner. I shouldn’t have told him and should have just kept it.

Hand it in. Always, always hand it in. You don’t know how much the owner may need their money. I’d never consider anything else ever and I’ve been very poor.

if there was ID in the wallet with an address I’d have driven to the house and handed it to them.

I found £70 on a supermarket floor. Everyone was just walking past it!

I handed it in. I know it will never find it's way back to the owner (I left a big set of keys next to a member of staff in there and I never got that back so the owner has zero chance). I hated handing it over knowing the supermarket will keep it or at best add it to it's donation pot. But I did the right thing and that is what matters.

I've done the bad thing enough times to know I dont like feeling that way and will regret it.

I found a similar amount on the street and handed it in to the police.

After a year and a day it hadn't been claimed, so it became mine. There was no way to find out who owned it, and I had done all I could.

Keeping a wallet would be a particularly scummy thing to do.

Anyone who has ever lost a wallet will be grateful you handed it in. It is best to be honest. A friend of mine lost her wallet and it had her tickets for her holiday the next day. It was handed in and she got it back later the same day. Thank goodness for honest people.

I found a wage packet many years ago with £200 inside. Handed it in immediately.
My children were primary school age at the time and watched me do the right thing.
Imagine the example I would have set to them if Id kept it.

I dropped £50 in a supermarket once. When I got home and realised I’d lost it I phoned in, someone had handed it in. I was able to say how much - I’d just been to the cash point. I was so relieved to get it back.

As I say, I left my distinctive keys right next to a member of staff. I phoned 30mins later when I realised, then I went in the next day and twice more but never got them back. I left them there 100%. I remember doing it. So a random pile of cash seems unlikely to be returned. Hopefully it did though.

I found a wallet in a trolly in waitrose last year, it was stuffed with notes. I earn minimum wage myself, I could have done with that cash. I didn't hesitate in handing it in. Why would I do anything else, the thought never crossed my mind.

You sound pretty awful op, to think otherwise.

🤣🤣. Lots of people! My husband always has that sort of amount in cash in his wallet. If we’re going out for the night my best friend would usually have well over £100 in her purse. They have both been retired for many years and are definitely not tax dodgers - they just like to use cash at times.

I think this is the way to think about it OP. You’ve maybe saved someone else who is also having a hard time.

In my late teens I found a phone dropped on the street. Handed it in at the police station, and a couple of days got a handwritten thank you note dropped through the door.

Years ago I found a pair of Gucci sunglasses on a seat on a train to Southampton... I still have them somewhere. ;)

I know this was posted back in April but honestly? This is so dumb.

It was found on a train. The owner could live hundreds of miles away. And no one under 40 uses FB anyway. This is just a cheap nasty way of saying “you tried” then keeping it anyway.

She doesn’t have much integrity.
She was forced to hand it in and is resentful of this.
Her dh is the one with integrity in that relationship.
