Just got this email this morning. Absolutely gutted - my kindle was bought for me by my ds for Christmas 2011 when he was a student- still works perfectly.

Well! After a couple of days of being too scared busy to think about my new Kindle I finally switched it on again last night and there was my latest book. I tapped it and that seemed to make it download and then there were a couple of steps to go through and I got to the start of the book. Phew!

I'm still going to do the housekeeping thing. Part of the difference is that all the books I've ever bought seem to be on this one whereas on the old one I had removed them from the device so the list of books to read was much shorter.

Thank you to everyone for your help and words of wisdom 🤗

Cookiepuss · 05/05/2026 12:50

I too bit the bullet and purchased a new Kindle and had the same issue with finding books as EVERYTHING was on the home page (rather than the books I had read being in an archive like they were on the old one).

I did a lot of Googling and found out that I needed to create new "Collections" which was much easier to do on a laptop through my Amazon account if you have loads of books which have transferred over.

However, I was about ready to send it back at one point as some of the instructions I found online were not always right (or related to a slightly older gen Kindle) and it was a bit of trial and error to work it out and get set up how I wanted.

The Paperwhite Kids version is on offer at £135 today, so £108 with the 20% code. This is better value than the adult version. Works exactly the same, same hardware/software, free case included, 2 year warranty rather than 1 year. You just need to toggle the kids setting off apparently. Think I'll get one of those.

Is yours definitely one of the versions no longer being supported? I thought mine would be due to age but when I looked up devices on my account it’s not

How do you find out which model yours is? I’ve had mine for ever, with 100s of books on it, but haven’t a clue about the model, except that it’s one with automatic lighting, which the earlier ones weren’t, I know, since dh was given one and never used it. I gave it to a skint colleague!

I bought this today with a further £5 discount for trading in my old Kindle. Apparently they’ve tightened up the ad free on the kids version so if you switch the child mode off, you get ads unless you pay £10 to remove them.

I don’t think there will be a better offer though. I’ve had price alerts for all the Paperwhites since I let the Kids offer which was live when the initial email went out slip because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, and this is the first time since then it’s been on offer. Probably not by accident, it’s not likely that Prime Day will be before the discount code expires.

RebelMoon · 13/05/2026 19:09

@toastofthetown agree, I've been keeping an eye on it for the same reason and this is the first sniff of a discounted price for weeks. There's a possibility they might discount the adult version ahead of father's day but it's unlikely to be cheaper than this.

I'm not trading my old one in for a fiver though. It's worth more than that to me.

KarmenPQZ · 13/05/2026 20:52

The non kids version was down to £124 (with ads) in March tho so I reckon between now and June 20 - when the coupon expires - they’ll be another discount.

im not blinking first Amazon! I’m excited for a new kindle but I’m willing to hold out for the bank holiday weekend at least!

Hankunamatata · 13/05/2026 20:56

Yabu. Ditched mine for kobo ereader so I can borrow library books through libby

I actually got the email today. Bought mine in 2010/2011.

Johnogroats · 15/06/2026 18:32

I ‘ve just caught up with this…. While away on holiday so didn’t have a lot of reading material. I’m really cross. Need to look into whether the cheaper kindle would be ok - I currently have a paperwhite that’s worked perfectly well. I’ve not seen any codes…. Best trawl through old emails, but speaking to Amazon today they offered 15% off then upped it to 20%. I’m holding out. Probably in vain. Rethinking my relationship with Amazon.

herbalteabag · 15/06/2026 18:37

Oh no, that's sad. I have a Kindle from 2011 and wasn't aware of this. I only use it occasionally but I had no intention of getting rid of it or upgrading it in anyway - it functions perfectly fine.

I think Prime day is coming up so there may be something discounted in that. Fortunately my dm had a “spare” so I now have a fairly recent paperwhite .

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 16/06/2026 07:07

I downloaded a lot of extra free stuff before they switched it off, it will more than keep me going till Christmas.
I have bought one 99p book since then, to read on my phone. I haven’t missed the ability to put new books on my Kindle tbh. It’s just saved me a fair bit of money.
Perhaps instead of saying I will get a new one for Christmas I will get one when I have saved double the cost of a new one. I’m just so sick of being manipulated into spending more and more money.

HScully · 16/06/2026 21:43

Ive taken advantage of the 20% discount and bought a new one. But I am annoyed I have had to

FrostyMorn · 16/06/2026 22:38

I've bought a 7th generation paperwhite on ebay for 25 quid which I hope will still be viable (and functioning) for a few years. Just couldn't bring myself to buy a brand new one - but hope this won't prove a false economy.

Just realised that today is the deadline for using the 20% off code in the email. I was going to wait for Amazon Prime Day but now I don't know what to do!

Shall I buy one today and kick myself if it's reduced next week, or wait and kick myself if it isn't?

I only want it for reading books, nothing fancy. Which is the best current model to buy?

RaraRachael · 20/06/2026 17:57

My kids bought me my first kindle for my 50th birthday in 2012. It died and I got a replacement one but no idea what year or which model I've got

WipersThymes · 20/06/2026 18:10

@HolidayHattie I got the Amazon Kindle (newest gen) – Lightest and most compact Kindle with glare-free display, faster page turns, adjustable front light and long battery life – 16 GB – Without Ads – Matcha.

It's quite different to our beloved slate and chalk version but I started reading my first book on it a few nights ago and it's okay. I haven't worked out how to find out a word's meaning yet and I've only tried turning the pages on the side twice. I'll get used to it slowly but surely.

Good luck with getting the best price, whichever one you choose 🤞

I suspect you'll get more than 20% off on Prime day but it's a gamble. I think they made the code expire before Prime day on purpose.

I went for the Paperwhite Kids version when it was reduced a few weeks ago. With the 20% off code as well it was a good deal but I think they're full price again now.

Of course they did, the bastards.

Yes - as above.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 24/06/2026 12:46

I was much miffed as I didnt get an email with a code but I noticed Kindles are on sale just now so I used the chat thingy and asked for a code and voila! a discount code was added to my account! Paperwhite in jade is on its way.

So if your code is out of date you should contact them and ask for a new one.

Maybe if we keep giving all our money to billionaires they will eventually fuck off to Mars together?
