Just got this email this morning. Absolutely gutted - my kindle was bought for me by my ds for Christmas 2011 when he was a student- still works perfectly.

Until they change the rules ...

What "rules"? There are no more updates. It takes a lot of money and time to develop updates for old devices. 14 years is a HUGE amount of time for a device to be supported, and it's amazing that it's even still going.

Not everything is a drama. Not everything means people are working against you or trying to trick you. It just doesn't make good business sense to keep providing these updates. They're losing more than they're gaining. It's fair.

LightDrizzle · 08/04/2026 11:09

I’m contemplating getting a Kobo but I’m not technically competent enough to move existing content across and I have well over £1,000 worth of books on my Kindle. It’s awful that you don’t own them in any permanent sense.

Things are complicated for me because I’ve emigrated but if I change the my country in my profile (I can still buy from different regional Amazons) - I will apparently lose access to all my books so I’ve still got my setting as a U.K. address.

I’d happily pay someone to do it for me. I think it is possible but quite complicated.

Clefable · 08/04/2026 11:10

Kindles use e-ink so the page looks like a book page and doesn’t cause eye strain. It’s not the same as reading on a tablet. I read a huge amount on Kindle. I don’t read books on phone or tablet unless I have forgotten it or am just reading for 10 mins or so.

FrothyCothy · 08/04/2026 11:18

I have two kindles registered to my account and only the older one is affected by this change but the offer of a discount code almost tempted me to replace my 2015 one even though it’s entirely serviceable (bar diminished battery life). Smart move on Amazon’s part as suspect others who have multiple devices registered may end up doing the same. I’ve talked myself out of it for now.

LilyBunch25 · 08/04/2026 11:19

Swines. That'll affect me.

HollywentLightly · 08/04/2026 11:22

Papyrophile · 08/04/2026 08:56

I must use mine a lot more than you. I have exhausted three since the first one.

This must be the most perfectly MN comment I've ever read. How many dinners do you get out of a chicken?

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 08/04/2026 11:31

@LilyBunch25 they are swines, aren't they? Fuckers.

@Bjorkdidit thank you, you've just saved me an extra £30, I was going to buy the ad free one but ads just on the sleep screen I can definitely put up with.

I'm glad I saw this thread before I had the dubious pleasure of opening their fucking mealymouthed email. Getting the news from mumsnetters first makes it a tad easier to deal with.

@FortyFacedFuckers thank you, too. Going straight for that one and not giving it any more headspace.

Grrr.

Matcha green it is! 💚

To be fair its still perfectly possible to buy a record player and so this is unlikely.

I know what you mean, but this was all about kindles. While I don't agree they should become unusable after a certain time, you still have access to all the books you bought through either a new kindle, tablet or phone.

So the books persist, it's the device that becomes obsolete.

Jc2001 · 08/04/2026 12:12

senua · 08/04/2026 09:23

Ah, you are agreeing with me. The more whizz-bang the technology, the sooner it becomes obsolete or they make it become obsolete.

Not really. If you think of the Kindle as the record or dvd player. The kindle may wear out but you still have access to the 'books' through a number of different devices. So the tech may move on but the books will remain. In fact that's the advantage over physical media like dvds.

LilacPossum · 08/04/2026 12:22

Ohhh I’m gutted! My kindle has a keyboard and it’s own built in 3G. It’s a bit like our sandwich toaster- I forget about it for months, remember it’s there, become addicted to it for a few weeks then start the cycle again!

KarmenPQZ · 08/04/2026 10:49

This is what I don’t understand. Because the ad free kindle is £30 more than one with ads. Are the ads just in the sleep screen? Can you really upgrade for just a tenner?

I upgraded mine for £10 recently. And yes I think the ads are just in the sleep screen but it annoyed me when I opened it so I paid to upgrade

The 3G signal is in the process of being switched off, this year, so you’ll sadly lose connectivity very shortly - most providers have already completed their shutdown, I think O2 is just about finished and that’s the last one.

Bjorkdidit · 08/04/2026 13:13

3G Kindles also have wifi though so unless you don't have access to wifi, it's a bit of a pointless feature.

From what I've seen the ads are only for book recommendations so I actually found it quite useful and they are only on the sleep screen, so not at all imposing

CandidOP · 08/04/2026 13:24

I got the email too and am rather sad. I love my Kindle. I bought my husband a newer one and neither he nor I like it. He rarely uses it as it’s functionality just frustrates him.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 08/04/2026 13:40

I have a kindle keyboard that still worked just fine. Fuckers.

Though I have been reading a lot using the kindle app lately as I love me an infinite scroll. If one of the new kindles had that I'd one but they don’t. Woe.

Trumpisacunt · 08/04/2026 13:43

FortyFacedFuckers · 08/04/2026 09:27

Just the very basic one, it’s currently down to £74.99 and with the further discount I got it for £59.99

If you trade in your old one you also get 20% off your text one !

HollywentLightly · 08/04/2026 11:22

This must be the most perfectly MN comment I've ever read. How many dinners do you get out of a chicken?

Four/five portions, usually two different meals, but DH eats a lot! Plus a batch of soup in winter!

I did pass along my original Kindle to my mum when the first paperwhite came out but I have completely lost the habit of reading physical books, except cookbooks so I habitually use the Kindle.

Helppleasestuck · 08/04/2026 13:49

Also got this- my kindle in fairness is 1st generation paperwhite.
Whatever I do I definitely will not use the phone reading app as the whole thing i like about the Kindle is its lack of connectivity to wifi/ distractions etc.
I don't really want a new one till this one stops, so it's a bit annoying but i do get it. Kids have newer ones.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 08/04/2026 13:51

Oh no! I have a paperweight, probably first generation but I can't remember. Have had it for years so I think it must be. I love it, and it still works perfectly.

This is so frustrating.

KaleidoscopeSmile · 08/04/2026 13:55

ElinoristhenewEnid · 08/04/2026 09:59

The problem is that I have downloaded documents onto my kindle not from Amazon using my kindle email address and pdfs. Not sure they would work on the kindle app.

You can probably access the documents and pdfs on Kindle Cloud at read.amazon.co.uk/

Yesitsmeimback · 08/04/2026 13:56

I have a kindle waterproof paperwhite I accidentally flipped it off my towel abd into a, swimming pool. Dp dived in to rescue it (ny hero 😂) it drained some water and then worked immediately I was so impressed.
How on earth do you exhaust a kindle by reading too much? I use mine absolutely loads everyday for at least a couple of hoyrs, but its a piece of tech so doesn't get tired.

rosycheex · 08/04/2026 14:34

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 08/04/2026 09:23

The government could ban books and forcibly cease them from homes for burning too 🤷‍♀️

Yes but you could hide your books surely - there’s nothing in a paper book that they can track down electronically

Boomer55 · 08/04/2026 14:48

I’m on Kindle 5, so well done on it lasting that well.
