Just got this email this morning. Absolutely gutted - my kindle was bought for me by my ds for Christmas 2011 when he was a student- still works perfectly.

The problem is that I have downloaded documents onto my kindle not from Amazon using my kindle email address and pdfs. Not sure they would work on the kindle app.

From what I understood from the email, it won't stop working overnight and you'll still have all your books, docs etc.
It's just buying new books through Amazon, right, that will no longer be supported?

Bloatstoat · 08/04/2026 14:59

I got the same message OP, equally annoyed! I don't want a new one, my old kindle does everything I want and I can't afford one even with the money off voucher they have so generously sent Angry

FrothyCothy · 08/04/2026 09:00

Is yours definitely one of the versions no longer being supported? I thought mine would be due to age but when I looked up devices on my account it’s not

Yes, mine was okay, too.

Ohhh I’m gutted! My kindle has a keyboard and it’s own built in 3G. It’s a bit like our sandwich toaster- I forget about it for months, remember it’s there, become addicted to it for a few weeks then start the cycle again!

The 3G network is in the process of being switched off so that will stop working at some point.

If you trade in your old one you also get 20% off your text one !

This is awesome. I’m hoping I can trade in my mum’s old one with a broken screen and keep the existing one (unsupported) for my daughter now. Win win!

mines def slow and I’m generally not a consumer at all but am quite happy for an excuse to buy a new one now!

there’s already 20% off the matcha one with adds, plus 20% trade in, plus 20% for the obsolescence, plus £15 book voucher. I’m pretty happy with this

pinkgirl9 · 08/04/2026 15:32

I got mine in 2014 and it only this year started not turning on every now and then and before kids 3 years ago I read a book or 2 a week. I treated myself to a new one for Mother’s Day! You can still use it and download books onto it I’m guessing?

BloodandGlitter · 08/04/2026 15:34

It's a good job that anna has an archive of books that people might choose to download and put on their kindle with Calibre rather than be beholden to Amazon anyway.

But there will be a point where you can't buy a dvd player so a dvd will be useless to you.

You can rip them to disk and keep that forever.

I think I also got £5 gift card for my old non working kindle too - so 20% plus a fiver made getting a new one much more affordable

I got the same OP, it’s extremely annoying, I use my kindle 3/4 times a year when on holiday as the rest of the time I prefer books and it still works perfectly but they currently have 20% off the cheapest one and the email gave another 20% off code which works on top of the discount currently on Amazon so I have just purchased another one!

Is the code the same as the OP’s? I’m asking because if not, the OP might want to get the photo removed so no-one else uses her code!

Yesitsmeimback · 08/04/2026 13:56

I have a kindle waterproof paperwhite I accidentally flipped it off my towel abd into a, swimming pool. Dp dived in to rescue it (ny hero 😂) it drained some water and then worked immediately I was so impressed.
How on earth do you exhaust a kindle by reading too much? I use mine absolutely loads everyday for at least a couple of hoyrs, but its a piece of tech so doesn't get tired.

We’ve had three just freeze and become unable to restart. In fact my first one froze on a “low battery” screen and remained on that screen for several years 😆 very weird but there was seemingly no way to recover it.

HollywentLightly · 08/04/2026 11:22

This must be the most perfectly MN comment I've ever read. How many dinners do you get out of a chicken?

😂😂😂😂

My DS uses my old kindle, which is about the only thing that inspires him to pick up a book (kind of), so I’ll be using the double discount to buy him a new, basic one. The old kindle has more than served its time tbh, I was surprised it worked for as long as it did.

museumum · 08/04/2026 16:24

I just checked and mine is 7th Gen (2020) and I remembered I only got it because my original keyboard kindle (1st Gen?) stopped working for buying online from the kindle store.
To be honest, I mostly use the app on my ipad mini as it's illuminated for reading in bed at night but I like to have my little kindle on holiday (smaller and lighter), on the beach, in the bath, and reading outside in bright sunlight.
I guess at some point it just becomes too much hard work for them to keep the current software functioning on the older hardware, even though the hardware seems to work fine.

My code is the same so not personalised

Thanks! I didn’t get the email despite my kindle being even older… I might look at replacing it if I can use a code!

But there will be a point where you can't buy a dvd player so a dvd will be useless to you.

You can still buy record players and tape decks so I think DVD players will be around for a while yet. Plus you can burn them onto a hard drive etc.

LilacPossum · 08/04/2026 16:45

Yeh I don’t use the 3G on it as I tend to use WiFi, but it was super handy when I went on holiday to be able to access the internet. Just shows how old my kindle is!

Monzo1ss · 08/04/2026 16:55

You’re being unreasonable for sure. Products being supported 14-18 years after release is unheard of.

Most products are supported for significantly less time, maybe 3-5 years at best.

In comparison, Apple and Samsung for example do not offer almost 20 years of support for their tablets.

You are failing to understand that Amazon went over and above here. They did not need to support old devices for that long.

Plus, you seem to lack understanding of what support means. Your device will still work, it just won’t receive any updates and if you had an issue, Amazon won’t offer tech support. Which is valid, given you’ve had 15 years out of it.

You’re going to need to fact check this.

Damaged items usually come with a lower trade in value, and you generally can’t stack multiple discounts. Unless everything you’ve listed is a discount in the form of a gift card, you might not get as much as you assume in the end, might be closer to 20-30%.

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 08/04/2026 17:00

I had an OG kindle that did this eventually. I have since bought a kindle fire; basically it’s a tablet but with the kindle app it’s like a cheaper kindle. Works for me anyway.

RebelMoon · 08/04/2026 17:04

Cheeky fuckers are offering me "up to £5" trade in for my beloved 16 year old kindle keyboard. They can stick that fiver where the sun doesn't shine.

I've never trusted them.
Or Apple.

Been on Android forever.

What do you mean by trust?

Apple is the best when it comes to privacy, no other large tech company compares to Apple here. Google is the worst when it comes to harvesting your data unfortunately. Amazon isn’t as bad.

Additionally, Apple devices tend to be supported for longer simply because Apple only need to look after their own hardware.

Whereas there are hundreds of android devices with different specifications and manufacturers, leading to a fragmented ecosystem. It’s not as straightforward for all recent android devices to be able to support all recent software versions simultaneously, like it is with Apple.

In terms of Amazon, offering 14-18 years of support for these kindles is above and beyond. You won’t even get that level of support from Apple or android, or from any manufacturer of tech products frankly. Android isn’t better than Amazon here.

To be fair they’re not cutting off the books, she can still read them on her existing kindle or any new one she buys.

or on phones, desktops and tablets with thr kindle app
