AIBU for blowing out my nephew’s birthday candles as a joke

My nephews 6th birthday party yesterday. He was struggling to blow all the candles out so I jokingly blew the remaining ones out for him. My sister went on a full on strop over it saying I ruined his moment. AIBU to think she’s completely over reacting?? She ended up relighting the candles for him to “have another go” making it a much bigger deal than it needed to be.

Have you apologized to him yet?

Aliflowers · 05/04/2026 12:36

Eh no that’s an arsehole level move. Why would you think it’s ok to blow out a child’s birthday candles. They literally get to do it once a year

HeddaGarbled · 05/04/2026 12:36

Yeah, not your place to interfere.

SergeantWrinkles · 05/04/2026 12:36

It was kind of a dick move.

Rileysp · 05/04/2026 12:36

If this was a one opportunity she may be right. But she re-lit them

i I think she’s bang out of order in embarrassing you AND her child.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/04/2026 12:36

What an arseholian thing to do to a 6yo op.

Credittocress · 05/04/2026 12:36

A horrid thing to do. My aunt used to do stuff like this, it was because she couldn’t stand not being the centre of attention

Northstar26 · 05/04/2026 12:36

Sounds like you were trying to be funny but don’t really understand children? It’s a big deal for him. Apologise and move on

TheHouse · 05/04/2026 12:37

Are you always that insufferable?

Whyarepeople · 05/04/2026 12:37

Bloody hell, if an adult blew out my child's candles they'd have the most epic nuclear meltdown it would be heard ten streets away. I can't imagine doing something so mean to a child.

userlotsanumbers · 05/04/2026 12:37

If people didn't laugh then it probably wasn't funny, was it? Dick move, to be honest.

arethereanyleftatall · 05/04/2026 12:37

That is a level of nastiness that I cannot fathom

Snorlaxo · 05/04/2026 12:37

Jokes are supposed to be funny.

Ghostspritz · 05/04/2026 12:37

Not a nice thing to do to a six year old.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 05/04/2026 12:37

You did this to a six year old child?
Whoa.

Dinosweetpea · 05/04/2026 12:37

You were a dick.

MyAgileHedgehog · 05/04/2026 12:37

It is poor form to blow a kids birthday candles out unless you are also 6 and you share a birthday. It is their birthday you should have let them have their moment in the spotlight.

OriginalSkang · 05/04/2026 12:38

Fucking horrible thing to do to a six year old

BeeCucumber · 05/04/2026 12:38

Yep - you are a twat.

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 05/04/2026 12:38

I think this is fake but you sound like an attention seeker.

VivX · 05/04/2026 12:39

Yes it was a twattish thing to do.

RunningJo · 05/04/2026 12:39

I’m team sister on this one, it was a twattish thing to do OP

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 05/04/2026 12:39

As the saying goes, it’s only a joke if everyone involved finds it’s funny.

blowing the candles out on the birthday cake of a 6 year old makes you a knob. You need to apologise.

AliceNotInChains · 05/04/2026 12:39

Just to add nephew wasn’t even bothered, he laughed
