AIBU for blowing out my nephew’s birthday candles as a joke

AliceNotInChains · 05/04/2026 12:34

My nephews 6th birthday party yesterday. He was struggling to blow all the candles out so I jokingly blew the remaining ones out for him. My sister went on a full on strop over it saying I ruined his moment. AIBU to think she’s completely over reacting?? She ended up relighting the candles for him to “have another go” making it a much bigger deal than it needed to be.

There were two candles left! It’s not like I blew the whole lot out but I’ll take it on board and won’t do it again

It's officially ok as long as you blow out less than 50% of the candles😂

Screamingabdabz · 05/04/2026 13:08

Everybody knows you don’t do that. It’s in the same league as men who think it’s funny to smush wedding cake in the bride’s face when they’re being filmed cutting the cake. Dick behaviour.

ForeverTheOptomist · 05/04/2026 13:08

I'm sorry, but that was a pretty grim thing to do to a six year old, or even a 66 year old come to that.

Perhaps you could apologise to your nephew.

This. Only the perpetrator finds it funny, usually everyone else is watching on aghast.

Zanatdy · 05/04/2026 13:10

Sorry but that’s really mean. Why would an adult do that?

Aquarius91 · 05/04/2026 13:10

Not funny, arsehole move.

Ohcrap082024 · 05/04/2026 13:11

My mum’s best friend had a dd who would pull this kind of stunt. For laughs. Always just a joke. She was a dickhead then and is still a dickhead now even though she is heading into her 60s.

PicklePalace · 05/04/2026 13:11

You are so evil, this is worse than if you’d picked up a stone and gone on a bludgeoning rampage at the party
<just to join in with the hilariously hyperbolic comments on here >?

Was this the one who insisted on using the shared toilet rather than walk down the ooooooh scarey corridor to the ensuite they had insisted they had.

Some people eh! Mind you , if the sun shone out of my arse I would probably insist on the ensuite room……

😆

gostickyourheadinapig · 05/04/2026 13:12

Why would you spoil a child's fun? Blowing out the candles is important to a six-year-old. It's not in the least important to an adult and anyway, you presumably have your own birthday.

If my DH had done this to me on our wedding day, the marriage would have been instantly annulled. I don't appreciate anyone pulling a practical joke to make me look daft, in order to TRY to make him look hilarious. I'd be done.

purpleme12 · 05/04/2026 13:14

She was right to light the candles again for him

EmeraldShamrock000 · 05/04/2026 13:15

hahaha funny but absolutely awful to do to a child.
I hate seen kids blowing their germs over a birthday cake but what can you do, you have to wait patiently while they do their thing.

Ally886 · 05/04/2026 13:15

A man once kicked my dog. I was angry but I didn't punch him in the face.

If someone blew my candles out as a joke they'd be getting a swift bunch of fives. In fact if your nephew blew out my candles as a joke, the same would apply

You’re really going to go as low as taking the piss out of a health condition I have? Seriously?

OMG yes it is toilet poster!!
This confirms what I thought in the original thread, you’re an absolute attention seeker and have a bad case of main character syndrome. No wonder your sister flipped, she must be absolutely fed up with you.

Lovernotafighter83 · 05/04/2026 13:16

Wow, the comments here are harsh, Mumsnet is more like harshnet!

ideally if he was struggling, his Mum or Dad would step in and ask if he wants help. I think it would have bed. Fine for you to blow them out if you asked ‘shall I give him a hand’. BUT, we all do things in the heat of the moment and it’s about intention. Sounds like your intention was to help him, but a little misplaced. It really isn’t the end if the world and if your nephew was sad, the. I think it’s fine for your sister to re-light for round 2. Not a biggie or worth falling out over xx

Me she’s not, it wasn’t about your health condition, it was about the ridiculous demands after people inconveniencing themselves to make your life easier.

I thought this was a reversey percy until I noticed OP's use name and realised it's the Toilet Princess. So I can totally believe she would do something like this and consider it acceptable.

'Reversey Percy' has made me laugh more than it should!!

I noticed the user name too and remembered spooky en-suite-gate. Assuming everything is as presented, it very much does sound like main character syndrome.

You're fed up of your sister...it sounds like you did this deliberately to annoy her. Why even attend the party in the first place

Theonebutnotonly · 05/04/2026 13:18

How can you blow out candles "jokingly"? Either you do it or you don’t. You did. Did he think it was a joke and laugh?

Thank you for the sensible, non hysterical response. Good to see some people on here are still capable of being civil.

Your nephew is 6 . How old are you ? That’s the sort of thing another child might do.
As an adult you should know better.
