To take up a bigger table than needed in a cafe?

To try to use a bigger table in a cafe?

I know it’s not always possible, such as during busy times, and I would never ‘hog’ a larger table for myself.

But during quiet times… such as right now! I’m in a cafe on my own with 2 dogs and I’ve sat myself at a 4 seater table.

I actually hate 2 seater ones. They are just too small and I get claustrophobic with all the clutter of cutlery, condiments, sides of veg etc.

I like to spread out!

YABU for taking 2 dogs into a cafe with you. It's disgusting.

Of course it's irresponsible to have dogs sat on customers seats which I've witnessed time and time again. It's hygiene plus safety as many people have allergies plus many irresponsible owners can't control their pets.

Complain people let's get this appalling fashion for dogs in eating establishments stopped! I've been successful thus far.

It’s not irresponsible to take dogs into dog friendly cafes.

Riapia · 30/03/2026 20:47

Dogs if well behaved should be allowed in a cafe. Same applies to children.

XenoBitch · 30/03/2026 20:50

If the café is pretty empty then sit where you want.

It is only on MN where if you are alone, you have to sit at a tiny little table... even if the rest of the place is empty. Hell, there have been comments on there that say if you are a single diner then you should get take away coffee and leave the tables to people with friends.

Not in a dog friendly café.

I sit in four seater booths on my tod on trains, @Egit . I never ponder it thought. That way lies the road to hell.

Oh, that has been a thread on here. The 4 seaters are "for families" apparently.

It is, particularly if they sit on customer's chairs. Don't you have any hygiene standards?

Do hygiene standards for eateries extend to the seats?
Maybe look up how places get the star ratings.

No one is eating off of seats anyway.

Dogs shouldn't be in cafes.

Agree. If I go into a high street cafe and there are dogs in it, I go back out again.

There is a nice cafe in the park that welcomes dog walkers and that's fine, it's located where dogs go, so I have no problem with that, and enjoy the doggy interaction as I miss my dog.

But I don't want to have dogs everywhere I go.

Personal hygiene standards surely. No one should have to sit where a dog's grubby bum has just been.

I have a dog, she does not come to cafes with me.

My dog does... because I did not get a dog to just leave her at home all the time.

Onleemoi · 30/03/2026 21:28

Mine does too. He has a travel mat.

Do they become more unhygienic when they leave their home?

No. They are dirty and smelly all the time. It's your choice to have them in your home.

Onleemoi · 30/03/2026 21:57

It’s my choice to take him to a dog friendly cafe too.

Oh no mine doesn't stay home all the time. She has lots of walks and fun. Just doesn't come shopping with me or go to cafes.

No but at least keep them on the floor in cafes. We shouldn't have to sit on dog hair covered customer's chairs.

I am confused. Are we on about dog or babies?

I take mine on holiday and I can't leave her in the accommodation. So she goes in cafes and shops... in places that allow dogs.

Yes! Maybe those who have rats as pets or mice should take them for a cafe trip too? Let's have all our pets sat on chairs in the local caf Grin.

An acquaintance of mine has a house rabbit. It's friendly and cute. Obvs can't take it into a cafe full of dogs. How is this fair?

Maybe a dog bed in the accommodation I presume as you do at home?

Rabbits don't need walks and socialisation like dogs do.

Allseeingallknowing · 30/03/2026 22:07

I’ve noticed more dogs on buses now ( not assistance dogs) and their owners let them sit on the seats

You are not allowed to leave dogs alone in holiday accomodation. It is against the rules. I literally said that in my previous post.
