To take up a bigger table than needed in a cafe?

To try to use a bigger table in a cafe?

I know it’s not always possible, such as during busy times, and I would never ‘hog’ a larger table for myself.

But during quiet times… such as right now! I’m in a cafe on my own with 2 dogs and I’ve sat myself at a 4 seater table.

I actually hate 2 seater ones. They are just too small and I get claustrophobic with all the clutter of cutlery, condiments, sides of veg etc.

I like to spread out!

I'd be more pissed off you had ddogs than spare seats.
I've got 2. Can't imagine taking them to Costa.
Xmas shopping we saw 2 huge hairy things trooping into Costa.. Ddog hairs in my latte. No thanks.

And me. Sit where you like, but I wish they’d keep slobbering smelly dogs away from food places. 🤮

Tryagain26 · 30/03/2026 17:05

It depends how busy the cafe is , if larger parties can't get in because you have a table for 4 to yourselves you are being very unreasonable to the cafe owner and to the people who can't get a table. If the cafe is empty there is no problem.
But I'm wondering why you need to go into a cafe with two dogs. That would bother me more than you taking a larger table.

Complain all you like but people are not wrong to take dogs in to cafes if they are welcomed..Not allowing dogs would do a lot of damage to many cafes especially in tourist areas like where the OP lives and not everyone keels over foaming at the mouth at the sight of a dog. I’ll assume that most cafe owners are intelligent and astute enough to decide which policy dog friendly or dog free, works better for their business and circumstances and it’s terribly arrogant to assume that their choice must align with your preferences.

Well I'm a responsible dog owner, so in the same way I wouldn't have 2 little whippets running next to me for 12km while I'm biking, nor would I take my lovely dog into a cafe as I know many people do not like it.

We aren't all responsible and considerate though sadly.

As I say the more we complain the more owners stop allowing it.

Myneighbourisanosyoldgit · 30/03/2026 17:09

Because people can't be parted from their bloody 'fur babies'.
I should start rocking up places with my son's python because it's my comfort thing.
People would soon be complaining, when it is infact a lovely reptile, he loves it and so do I.

Yes! Maybe those who have rats as pets or mice should take them for a cafe trip too? Let's have all our pets sat on chairs in the local caf Grin.

Onleemoi · 30/03/2026 17:14

Feel free, if the cafe allows them then no worries!

Oh BS. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it irresponsible. The world does not revolve around you and your preferences. If it works for a cafe then they’ll likely continue to allow dogs regardless of your complaints. If it doesn’t then they can re-evaluate but dog friendly cafes also actively attract customers. They don’t just turn them away. There are things that I hate in cafes (Big noisy groups and toddler groups) and try to avoid but it doesn’t mean that the cafe is wrong to allow them. I assume that the owners have the sense to put measures in place if it’s costing them money. If not I assume that it’s making money for them and I don’t expect their decisions to be based on my particular preferences. I can go elsewhere. No one is forcing me, or you, to use a particular business.

TenuousTed · 30/03/2026 17:17

I love snakes and rats so I have no problem with that. I’m not sure that the snakes and rats would enjoy it though as they aren’t companion animals in the same way that dogs, who have lived with and beside us for millennia, are.

Of course it's irresponsible to have dogs sat on customers seats which I've witnessed time and time again. It's hygiene plus safety as many people have allergies plus many irresponsible owners can't control their pets.

Complain people let's get this appalling fashion for dogs in eating establishments stopped! I've been successful thus far.

My dogs were on the floor… is they why people on here hate dogs in cafes so much? Because they think they shout at the table? 🙄

My immediate assumption on reading your post was that the lack of space was caused by the fact that there are three of you at the table, including the dogs, hence the claustrophobic feeling if sitting at a table for two.

Cats then? We could let cats wander round cafes as they wander round people's gardens?

Onleemoi · 30/03/2026 17:23

Honestly if you’d put your head’s together and complained properly rather than just on here you might have got somewhere by now. Years and years of ‘no dogs, end of!’ could’ve been avoided.

OP’s dogs were not sitting on seats.
For someone who supposedly has a dog you seem to actively despise them. It’s interesting to see how many owners on MN supposedly have a dog yet spend so much time frothing at the very mention of them.

And again you do realise that cafes are not going to turn away good money that they make from people who have dogs with them? No it clearly doesn’t work for every cafe but it’s a special kind of arrogance that you have that expects not only owners not to take dogs in where they are actively welcomed by proprietors but also that said cafe owners should apparently agree to make less money just because you don’t want dogs around. Even if they get more money from dog dog owners/lovers than they’d make from dog haters.

So you can probably afford a table that fits four then?

(Wrong thread?)

OneDogTwoCatsHalfaDH · 30/03/2026 17:57

Also, dogs should not be in cafes. The owners may allow it but as a hopefully <though perhaps not> responsible dog owner you should show others the way to behave.
Nonsense!
Who says dogs should not be in cafes?
There are plenty of no dogs cafes. I work in a very dog friendly cafe, we do get people looking in and choosing to go elsewhere, no problem. We are usually pretty full of dog loving customers so it's no skin off our nose 😁
And as long as it's not too busy sitting at a larger table isn't a real problem, as long as you don't mind being politely asked to share or move over when needed.

We're all allowed our own opnions. I have a dog, she does not come into cafes.

Is is just basic poor hygiene. Ive seen owners allow their dogs to sit on customers seats, I don't want to sit on the skiddy seat of someone's over pampered dog thanks.

The more of us that complain and point it out the more owners will stop it. 2 in our village don't allow dogs anymore

Up until November last year, there wasn’t a single cafe in our small town that didn’t allow dogs. Not one. A new one opened last summer beside one of the dog groomers and it didn’t just allow dogs, but marketed itself as a dog cafe. Cue a flurry of very excited dog owners bursting at the prospect of a dog friendly cafe, even though all the other ones ALREADY allowed dogs. Thankfully, in November, one of the others decided to change back to no dogs. You can’t get a seat in it for love nor money. I reckon a couple of the others will follow suit. Well. I live in hope.

Labelledelune · 30/03/2026 18:10

Reminds me of the time I was doing a wedding breakfast. I had a table shaped in a horseshoe for about 20 people with balloons etc on it. I opened the doors and just as I was going into the kitchen a couple walked in, I just called to them and said to sit wherever. I came out of the kitchen and they were sat in the middle of the bridal table. I asked them if they were part of the wedding party and they said no. The best of it was they got really angry upon being asked to move.

Oh great someone who works in a dog cafe! I will take the opportunity to appeal and hope you have some common sense.

Hopefully enough people will complain and you will stop, in the meantime please have some hygiene rules in place and tell the dog owners to keep them under the table not on customers seats. Obviously no eating from customer's plates too 🤢.

Dogs are much preferable to some of the patrons of Wetherspoons! I’m not sure why you’d prefer them?

The patrons are human and pay their way.

I sit in four seater booths on my tod on trains, @Egit . I never ponder it thought. That way lies the road to hell.
