£1.25 for a Wispa!! What grocery prices have given you a shock lately?

I nipped down to the shop this morning to buy some tea bags. In the opposite aisle, all the chocolate bars were lined up. I don't buy chocolate generally, but a Wispa bar winked at me. I took it to the till - £1.25 for a Wispa bar that is easily 2/3 of the size of the Wispa bars of my childhood.

I exclaimed to the cashier, who I know, and we had a nice conversation with another customer about rising prices, the cost of cereal shooting up, fuel, of course...it got me thinking.

What prices have you been shocked by when you're doing your shopping? My tins of tomatoes seem very stable at 47p per tin (I could get them for 43p but can't be bothered to get the tin opener out so I'm happy to pay a 4p ring-pull tax).

Kellogs cereal. My son won't eat any other brand, but Crunchy Nut Cornflakes - wow! So expensive. Also Ambrosia rice puddings and other desserts nearly £1 a pot!

Better buying own brand tins of rice pudding and decant into wee tupperware style tubs.
Asdas own is 90p the yellow label cheaper but we stick to the 90p and top with fruit
😋

Heinz Tomato Ketchup £3.90!!!
Thats more than I used to pay for a large pack of minced beef.
I’ve changed to M&S own brand for all sauces now and supermarket own brand mayo.

You’re not wrong! Actually big grab bags of bbq hula hoops are about that price. Might as well get a big bag or multi pack. They want us to eat more!

SilverGlitterBaubles · 07/06/2026 18:27

It’s not just to cost it’s the size of everything. Pay more for less of everything seems to be the norm.

I'm raging at the travesty that is Allen muesli. It's a disgrace and I have taken photos to send them to complain about how appalling their recipe has become. It's 90% wheat flakes with a small handful of nuts and raisins thrown in for good measure. That's no muesli!

Don’t you mean Alpen?

A few Co Op items shock me sometimes but their peanut butter was nice and in a glass jar.

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 07/06/2026 21:31

A pack of paper for the printer - nearly £5 in Tesco!

I've never been so tempted to just nick a pack from work 🤣 (I don't actually have the bottle)

Lurleene · 08/06/2026 08:53

Not quite the same as the supermarket but this gave me a shock last week. I popped into a pub with a friend, it has recently had a rebrand but is just a regular pub, not in London.

I ordered 2 glasses of wine - £27.50! Luckily the barman hadn't poured them already so I just said sorry, I'm not going to pay that and cancelled my order.

Womanofcustard · 08/06/2026 08:59

A couple of bananas would be cheaper than a chocolate bar.
Just saying.

All right, Gillian McKeith, calm down

£20!!! WTAF??

It's because it's manuka. Manuka honey is produced only by bees that pollinate one specific flower that's only found in parts of one country in the world, which happens to be about as far away from the UK as is physically possible. So it's very expensive to produce and import.

Complaining that manuka honey is expensive is a bit like complaining about the cost of, eg, beluga caviar - it's always been a very expensive, premium luxury product.

Loool I forgot about Gillian Mc-Bloody-Keith!

Is she still around?

the80sweregreat · 08/06/2026 10:34

Gillian mcKeith’s daughter was on a reality show climbing a mountain, but as I only saw one I don’t know how she fared. it was on a few months ago.
Gillian did the jungle ages ago and it didn’t go well, she kept on fainting and wouidnt do any of the trials.

BCBird · 08/06/2026 10:35

The single bars are a ridiculous price. Usually if I want chocolate i feel like I have to have it. I was so incensed at the cost of 1 bar, refused to buy it. Multi packs are better value, but they are so tempting that i can rarely just eat 1Blush

BCBird · 08/06/2026 10:39

I paid £2.30 for a pint of blackcurrant squash!

the80sweregreat · 08/06/2026 10:55

I still can’t believe I paid nearly 3 pounds for a can of water at a local theatre once. I should have taken my own in, but I didn’t think of it.
