£1.25 for a Wispa!! What grocery prices have given you a shock lately?

I nipped down to the shop this morning to buy some tea bags. In the opposite aisle, all the chocolate bars were lined up. I don't buy chocolate generally, but a Wispa bar winked at me. I took it to the till - £1.25 for a Wispa bar that is easily 2/3 of the size of the Wispa bars of my childhood.

I exclaimed to the cashier, who I know, and we had a nice conversation with another customer about rising prices, the cost of cereal shooting up, fuel, of course...it got me thinking.

What prices have you been shocked by when you're doing your shopping? My tins of tomatoes seem very stable at 47p per tin (I could get them for 43p but can't be bothered to get the tin opener out so I'm happy to pay a 4p ring-pull tax).

That Waitrose hadn't reduced the loads of Easter eggs they still had in stock to half price today. Usually there are just a few of the very expensive ones left but there were loads today

The price of a pint of Guinness, Lemon meringue pies (when you can actually find one) and yoga classes, doubled in price, duration often halved, from 90 minutes to 45-60minutes, which just doesn't work.

In that case I do yoga at home and my mum used to make a mean lemon meringue pie, must ask her for the recipe.

When I'm in the office I usually get a boots meal deal, but it was hailing so I went to the much closer m&s instead. Sandwich, drink, small chocolate bar and crisps - nearly £12. I remembered why I either bring my own or go to boots!

Even Greggs is more expensive these days. You can still get sarnies for a £1 or so in sainsbos and other supermarkets.

Jacob’s cream crackers £1.69

Edited

Aldi or Lidl sell cream crackers. And Sainsbury’s crackers are just as nice.

In the queue to pay for diesel yesterday and I remembered how, not so very long ago, I’d have grabbed a Snickers or Crunchie too. At £1.25 they stay on the shelf. I used to wobble about paying £0.79 and I’m not sure when they all rose over £1?

Edited

I love crunchies so they come with me. Even so I tend to buy large bars of chocolate instead.

My local organic shop doesn’t seem to have put prices up yet.

You can probably bake the bloody things cheaper!

And don’t start me on prices of sugar, eggs, flour. Eggs used to be super cheap.

i guess you need to be more discriminating with your chocolate bars - and avoid a Careless Wispa…
I’ll get my coat.

At our local food hall (also north west) for a spirit plus mixer, the mixer alone is £2.50, and that's for a splash of draft pepsi!

FishPie2 · 07/04/2026 21:53

I bought 2 halves of cider in a pub on Sunday, gave them £10 and I got 2 pound coins, 50p piece and some bits change. I was too embarrassed to count it so just shoved it in my purse. I don’t go in pubs very often so didn’t know if it was right so asked someone later if it was right and yes it was just over £7. In Wales.

My shopping bill seems to be going up and up but the price of a single pepper caught my eye this week at nearly £1. Why do the three peppers in a pack always have a manky one plus I'm not keen on green peppers, I need colour!

The other item is my alpro greek yoghurts at £1.30. I thought they were expensive when they went up to a £1, they have been offer for a couple of weeks at 85p which feels a bargain.

My husband gets annoyed that there's never any green peppers in the multi packs, he hates orange and yellow

SuzyFandango · 08/04/2026 07:17

There was a phase in the 90s & early noughties when food was really too cheap in the uk, it was a feature of subsidised farmers, supply chains that mistreated people in poverty abroad, low wages etc.

Believe it or not, the supermarkets often aren't making huge profits, sainsbury's make about 3% profit. After tax, and covering costs of things like discontinued businesses and restructuring, its much lower

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/04/2026 08:10

I’m off to Lidl Aldi later to get baking supplies plus food so will report back later. Might need to pop into sainsbos too.

We prob have got used to cheaper food and spending on other things.

In places like France food is not imported or not much. You just have what you grow in the county. No idea how it affects prices. Less packaging too even in supermarkets, cucumbers are just in open chilled cabinets/shelves, no need for plastic wrapping around them. If you live rurally you grow your own food too, my elderly NDNs did this, parents had holiday home in SW France.

Kellogs cereal. My son won't eat any other brand, but Crunchy Nut Cornflakes - wow! So expensive. Also Ambrosia rice puddings and other desserts nearly £1 a pot!
