£1.25 for a Wispa!! What grocery prices have given you a shock lately?

I nipped down to the shop this morning to buy some tea bags. In the opposite aisle, all the chocolate bars were lined up. I don't buy chocolate generally, but a Wispa bar winked at me. I took it to the till - £1.25 for a Wispa bar that is easily 2/3 of the size of the Wispa bars of my childhood.

I exclaimed to the cashier, who I know, and we had a nice conversation with another customer about rising prices, the cost of cereal shooting up, fuel, of course...it got me thinking.

What prices have you been shocked by when you're doing your shopping? My tins of tomatoes seem very stable at 47p per tin (I could get them for 43p but can't be bothered to get the tin opener out so I'm happy to pay a 4p ring-pull tax).

I rarely buy branded items, but I needed some cherry jam for a cake I was making my Mum for Mothers Day and the only one I could find was Bonne Maman - £3.80!! It wasn't even that nice, which made it worse.

I love a bit of jam on toast but I don't know who is buying that on a regular basis.

Not a great fan of Aldi but their more expensive range of jams are very good, especially the black cherry and the blackcurrant.
I used to treat myself to a slab of Ritter Sport Peppermint chocolate, it was about £1 a couple of years ago, it's now about £2.50.
When I was queuing in to pay for my Sunday paper the other week I couldn't believe the cost of single chocolate bars, nothing under about £1.35!

I got a 4 pack of Wispa Gold in Sainsbury’s for £1.75 nectar price. Feeling like I got a bargain now

Problem with the multi packs is that the bars really are tiny, not much bigger than snack size.

Onadark · 27/03/2026 13:01

Easter Eggs - how did we go from £6 for a big egg to £12 for half an egg? Just how did that happen?

Subway - salads now nearly £10 instead of £6 and they've done something horrible to the tuna it tastes cheap and nasty now like they've added something to it but i don't know what.

Lamb - how the bloody hell is lamb so expensive when it just comes from Wales and all the lambs do is eat grass? How is it £19 for a small joint of lamb now|?

I use Pond's cold cream to take make up off. It's hard to find in shops so I get it off Amazon.

It is now £45, yes £45 for a 3 pack!

<faints>

I am afraid to say I think its been discontinued now. Probably these ones are imported from where are still making it. I live in SA and was also looking for it a while ago, we do get other brands but not a Ponds in site online or in store.

My dc recently moved to the UK and the price of food was a real shock. One day she said she had bought a jacket potato with cheese and beans on her lunch break at work for 4GBP. My reply to her was " 👀 holy moly 4 pounds for a potato!" To which she replied, "Mom, the canteen is subsidized so that is cheap".
I dread to think what one costs usually then!

Yes £5 in my local shop for paracetamol

Seriously? It’s 39p where I live!

Before I read the end of the sentence I was like "oooh thats not bad, wonder where she has lunch" then I saw it was subsidised, I'd expect a spud to be around £7.95 ish

Its 55p in my big shop, but the local shop yep. I left empty handed and went back home, headache very much in tact 😅🫠 (my late dad's voice ringing in my ears "not payin that, day light bloody robbery!")

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 27/03/2026 15:28

My shopping bill seems to be going up and up but the price of a single pepper caught my eye this week at nearly £1. Why do the three peppers in a pack always have a manky one plus I'm not keen on green peppers, I need colour!

The other item is my alpro greek yoghurts at £1.30. I thought they were expensive when they went up to a £1, they have been offer for a couple of weeks at 85p which feels a bargain.

butterpuffed · 27/03/2026 15:48

Bought a small jar of marmite and crunchy peanut butter [225g] a couple of weeks ago. It's now £3.35 , still expensive though .

Lamb has always been expensive - I remember lamb varieties of things like pies being the first to be discontinued due to cost.
They can't be battery-farmed like chickens and need fresh air and grass!

I am looking forward to my Easter slow-roasted lamb shoulder... after I get my loan approved!

Mini eggs are ridiculously expensive for a teeny bag!

WhitegreeNcandle · 27/03/2026 16:30

I’m amazed more people arnt worrying about the impact of Iran on food prices. The NFU is shouting hard about costs going up and up.

I genuinely cant see how they say inflation is as low as it is when my shopping seems to have a tenner added on every month.

I find myself forever exclaiming “How much” when I’m at a till!

sometimeseverytime · 27/03/2026 16:37

To be fair, things like chocolate and other processed food should be expensive enough to be a rare treat.
However, fruit, vegetables, eggs are going through the roof . even porridge oats are getting expensive

Miranda65 · 27/03/2026 16:39

I've no idea what chocolate costs - I never look, just buy it!
But on the other hand, we just bought a new dishwasher - 12 years since the last one, same brand, virtually identical model and price has hardly changed. White goods are dirt cheap these days.... I remember buying my first washer/dryer in 1989 for £400, which would be £1,300 today!

EdithStourton · 27/03/2026 16:42

Mini Easter eggs.
3.99 for a little packet. It was in a notoriously expensive garden centre, but even so.

Crunchymum · 27/03/2026 16:43

Sainsburys stopped selling small bulbs of garlic. You used to be able to buy one for 25p, now they only sell the large ones individually and they're 50p.

In the grand scheme of things this isn't a massive overall cost - 50p - but it's a 50% markup on an item. This is happening at every level, with every supermarket.

Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, extra virgin olive oil and beef mince are all things I now baulk at buying. 1L of Sainsburys own brand extra virgin OO is £7.49 (up 49p from last time I had to buy it!!)

I've always been willing to pay a bit more for tea, coffee and HC so we still buy branded, but only when on offer. I'm going to start looking at own brand soon as even on offer it's getting silly.

Commodity prices feed through into farming very quickly. I walked through a field yesterday that was being planted with spuds (they'll be crisps eventually). There was a lot of heavy agricultural machinery on the move, and two big fuel bowsers had been brought to the field to keep it running. Big price increase right there, and then there will be the cost of fertiliser, and the ££ for the fuel to run irrigation if we get another dry summer.

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 27/03/2026 16:50

£1.30 for a snickers in co-op the other day. I saw it on the shelf and thought bloody hell, but reached for it any way as I really fancied one and it was tiny!! I'm sure it was almost half the size of a full size snickers! The cheek!

I put it back out of principle

Probably for the best 🤣

Gowlett · 27/03/2026 16:58

Individual chocolate bars, crisps, fizzy drinks are expensive where I live. No way you’d buy them in a convenience store, corner shop, or petrol garage. Chewing gum too.

Supermarkets want you to buy the multipack. Every week. That’s how it works. Branded cereals are a no-no. Own brand is actually nicer! M&S salads are off the scale…

Nosejobnelly · 27/03/2026 07:45

I don’t eat chocolate anymore, but yes that’s shocking. I remember when a bar was £60p not that long ago. And a Freddy was 10p, but you’re going back years.

Eggs are very pricey, stamps - for first class is bonkers and it’s hard to trust second class will get there!

Ha! I remember when chocolate bars were all 25p and the posh ones were 30p 😭

im a farmer and seeing what I’m being quoted for diesel is ridiculous. Big knock on effect with fertilizer as well. The glass houses of Europe aren’t protected by the energy price cap either. I can see food getting even more expensive.

Anything Greggs nowadays is overpriced and disappointing. Dh bought me back one of their tuna rolls , it had far too much onion in it and the bread was just awful. They used to do lovely rolls , but it’s all mass produced now and tastes of nothing. Prices have increased though. Somewhere else best avoided ( I don’t like sausage rolls , so easy to avoid those)
Chocolate is a luxury these days too and most of it is horrible.

This is so true.
I used to love a Greggs chicken club roll, previously in the £2-£3 range. Last time I wanting they were nearly £6!! I do like a sausage roll but have never been able to get on board with the Greggs ones, which have never tasted nice imo.

Also Lidl dark chocolate rice cakes, which were once £0.99 are now £2 , a pack of mince was best part of £5 and even non food stuff like tinfoil has gone up massively.

butterpuffed · 27/03/2026 17:44

Thanks for that @CleanandLight109 . Have some stuff coming from Amazon tomorrow, so may add that .
