Neighbour has put their rubbish in my bin

Me and my neighbours all put our bins on the corner of the cul de sac for collection. Bin day is today and I went to put something in last minute before they collect and one of my neighbours has put a big bag of rubbish in my bin. I'm a bit annoyed tbh, wouldnt you ask first? I also dont know whats in this big bag that they are disposing of in my name. I wouldnt have minded if they were struggling for space and asked me but I think its cheeky to just do it.

Never heard of refusing a bin as too heavy

mine is always heavy as slowly getting rid of ex husbands crap

I also think it’s fair game to put rubbish in a bin that is on the road ready to be emptied

Yes they will refuse if it is too heavy - at my collection at least.

Presumably it presents a hazard to the operator to move and is dangerous to lift, might cause damage either to the lifting equipment or to the bin itself on lifting.

I have never had one refused (I presume the lift automatically refuses to engage if it is too heavy) but am careful not to put too much in the garden waste one because it can weigh a ton with all the branches and soil that goes in there.

There is also the fact that if the bin is too heavy to lift it likely has a lot of inappropriate stuff in it that shouldn't be there, like bricks or building rubble.

The issue is that I didnt have space for my bag

So what did you do with your bag of rubbish?

Kept it in my house, what else was I meant to do? I'm going to have to take it to the tip as the black bins won't be emptied now for 2 weeks. I'm going to put a message on the neighbour WhatsApp group and say please can this not happen again without asking first.

It all ends up at the same place.. I would be a bit miffed but not enough to give it more thought that that. If its a common occurrence when your bin is by your house then say something but it wasn't.

viques · 18/03/2026 14:16

If and again if I was a serial killer, the mad axe woman sort, looking for a place to hide body parts I would probably drive around looking for half empty bins that good minded citizens had left at the bottom of their driveways for next day collection. I would double bag to prevent leaks and be careful not to put too much in each bin in case of weight issues.

MagpiePi · 18/03/2026 14:16

Naws · 18/03/2026 12:40

Just before collection I wouldn't expect them to ask me, no.

I had to laugh at 'disposing of in your name' though. Like all the rubbish doesn't get mixed up and crushed in the lorry 🤣

I had to laugh at 'disposing of in your name' though

Me too! The bin men don't go through your rubbish and make moral judgements you know!

I just don’t believe this, if it meant you had to bring you rubbish back inside I’m sure you would have remembered to include it in the OP.

Mumstheword1983 · 18/03/2026 14:27

My neighbour does this. When they are out on the street they check the bins for space and shove their extra rubbish in. Doesn't bother me. They are renovating and have more rubbish than usual.

PicklePalace · 18/03/2026 14:28

All the bins are weighed when they hoist them onto the back of the van to be tipped up and emptied

as a one off I wouldn’t be bothered. They made have inadvertently put their bag in your bin or meant to ask but thought as it was being collected very soon it was fine

but if it happens again, I’d have a word with them for sure. Because it IS rather cheeky

Toucan22 · 18/03/2026 12:45

I thought that was a common thing, its been the case for everywhere I've lived and I've lived in lots of different places in the UK.

By weight? I’ve never known of anywhere in the UK that does that. Volume, yes. Often they won’t take stuff outside the bin or that the lid won’t close on. But weight? How would they measure?
Where I am each house has a 3 black bag limit and the collection is every 3 weeks. No bins. I don’t mind if I’ve put two out and a neighbour adds a third.

Tillow4ever · 18/03/2026 14:43

This thread is interesting. Most people are giving the OP a hard time saying she’s being ridiculous as it was about to be emptied etc…yet a day or two ago there was a post with a lady saying the bin man were about to empty the general waste bins right in front of her, so she chucked a bag with dog shit in it into the bin about to be emptied, but the owner of the bin saw and went mad. The thread consensus was that this woman was a CF of the highest order and was completely out of line.

Makes me wonder what people would have said if this OP’s neighbour had posted saying they’d put a bag of rubbish in their neighbours bin as they had space, but later saw them go to try to add a bag to it and couldn’t because it was now full. I bet they’d have been ripped to shreds here.

Starting to think a lot of people on this particular forum just take glee in giving the OP a kicking regardless of whether they actually agree or not.

OP I think you are fine to be upset etc. I wouldn’t mind anyone using my bin as long as I had space for my own rubbish and they are only putting “allowed” items in there (I.e. I don’t want to find my bin hasn’t been emptied because they saw something in there that shouldn’t be, or I get a fine because they find the wrong things in there). If you have a group chat, I’d send a message saying you noticed so wish had used your bin and it meant you couldn’t put your last bag of rubbish out. Please can anyone wanting to use it just check in advance as you don’t mind if you’ve got nothing else to go out, but sometimes you need to add things last minute. Or something like that.

Why would I lie about that 😂I dont use other people's bins, therefore thought it would be pretty obvious I had to bring the rubbish back inside.

I think you are getting a hard time from some here. Fwiw, I think its cheeky to use a neighbour's bin for your rubbish. Where i live, we have different bins for different rubbish so that could have an impact on whether a bin is emptied or not. We also have to pay a substantial amount for garden rubbish to be collected too. It would hack me of if others used my bin instead of getting their own sorted.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 18/03/2026 14:48

So, if all the bins were in one place why did you not put your bag in another bin, rather than bringing it home for two weeks?

Whatthefork1 · 18/03/2026 14:49

Oh! Who really cares? Are there not more pressing issues to deal with in life??

hypnovic · 18/03/2026 14:51

I would love my life to be so easy that I considered this a problem

WalkDontWalk · 18/03/2026 14:52

OH NO!!!

Wittyapple · 18/03/2026 14:53

Surely if the bins were about to be collected, there were other things you could have done instead of taking your bag back inside for 2 weeks. This is such a non issue, I wouldn't have given it any thought.

TabbyM · 18/03/2026 15:00

We had a neighbour who dumped a dead dog in a communal street bin (our street is part big communal bins and some blocks have individual bins) so I would always be wary!

Sensiblesal · 18/03/2026 15:02

Have you rang 101 to report this?

Oblivionnnnn · 18/03/2026 15:05

Toucan22 · 18/03/2026 12:37

Yes. Its cheeky. I would have definitely at least sent a quick message. I've got two new neighbours so I think its one of them. Never had any problems before. I hope they dont intend on doing this every week!!

But if the bin lorry is halfway up the street why would you possibly care? As long as they’re not using your bin before you’ve had the chance to fill it 🤷‍♀️

Hayfield123 · 18/03/2026 15:49

I have never know anywhere in the uk that charges by weight. You pay your council tax and get the bins collected. Does your dustcart have a weighing machine attached to it.

Newbie8918 · 18/03/2026 15:50

Growlybear83 · 18/03/2026 12:46

I would have just taken the bag out and put it on the pavement

Really? And risk the bin men not collecting it and it sitting there or being ripped open abs rubbish blowing everywhere for a week. All for the sake of not wanting to give away empty bin space that you’re not using?

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/03/2026 15:58

Surely one bag can be added and squashed down

my black bin is rarely full after 2w as I recycle and 2 of us in household

RodneysGotaNewHairdo · 18/03/2026 16:03

Our council is strict about putting the right rubbish in the right bins and will refuse to empty them if they contain the wrong rubbish, or if they are over-full.

I came home from work one day to find that our bin hadn't been emptied, because some cheeky fucker had put their shit in it and the dustbin men had refused to empty it.

The chief bin officer at the council said they didn't empty our bin, because the lid wouldn't close properly and it had shit in it in that shouldn't be there.

We then had the disgusting job of removing the CF's shit and taking it down the dump just so we could continue using our bin until the next collection.

Household bins are not a public resource. Use your own fucking bins.

Rewis · 18/03/2026 16:11

I think it is cheeky and annoying thing to do. However, I would let it go this time and observe if it happens again. If it happens again, if would bring it up.
