Neighbour has put their rubbish in my bin

Me and my neighbours all put our bins on the corner of the cul de sac for collection. Bin day is today and I went to put something in last minute before they collect and one of my neighbours has put a big bag of rubbish in my bin. I'm a bit annoyed tbh, wouldnt you ask first? I also dont know whats in this big bag that they are disposing of in my name. I wouldnt have minded if they were struggling for space and asked me but I think its cheeky to just do it.

The issue is that I didnt have space for my bag and I just think its cheeky. I wouldnt dream of doing that, I would've at least sent a quick text to say "Ive run out of space, do you mind if I put an extra bag in your bin?" And yes it does worry me what they are disposing of in my name if its stuff thats not supposed to go in a black bin.

Ok that’s fair enough if you didn’t have room for your own rubbish - check the other bins and stick it on one of them.

Why on earth would this be her biggest issue? Was there a memo that only one's most important concern can be posted?

I know you said if but you can't seriously think it might be could you?

Where I use to live neighbours would ask in the WhatsApp group, it's only common courtesy. We have to put our bins out before a certain time which I do but will often add a bag if they are collected late and I'd be pretty pissed off if the bin had been filled by someone else

Yeah...its not my biggest problem. I dont remember saying that. I've got lots of problems just like everyone else.

It is the rule with my neighbours (who are unlikely to be dumping dead bodies in my wheelie bin) that our bins are o the pavement for collection - then we can put in bagged rubbish of our own bins are full.

Its neighbourly, prevents rats, makes fuck all difference to me or my bin.

Ginnnny · 18/03/2026 13:28

You are absolutely over reacting here! If they had come into your drive/garden to do this then yeah maybe a wee door knock. But assuming your bins are identical out on the street does it really matter? And is it really “in your name?” Dunno about yours but bin men in my area don’t inspect the contents of our bins 😂

We tend to share too.

My neighbour has a big family. I live alone. They have way more rubbish than me, and I would rather they use the space in my bin, than leave rubbish around for another two weeks.

I just assumed this was normal, an no-one asks "permission" beforehand. How ridiculous. They would be messaging me every bin day otherwise.

Well in that case focus on your real problems and stop dwelling over a bag of rubbish in the bin that's about to be taken away anyway.

I can't imagine getting my knickers in a twist about something so unimportant.

Abustedflush · 18/03/2026 13:36

Well, everyday is a school day as the saying goes. I didn’t know any domestic waste collection on the UK was determined by weight. Off to Google where this happens.

Erin1975 · 18/03/2026 13:36

Doesn't everyone do this? They certainly do in my street. Once I've put the bin out, I couldn't care less if one of the neighbours fills it up with something. It's getting emptied in the morning.

EEHHH · 18/03/2026 13:42

Maybe its a one off as bins was getting emptied, and thought fuck it it will all be gone in a bit.

Honestly it wouldn't bother me at all, as you said all bins were put out ready to be collected.
Is your bin now emptied.

Tbvvh I did this last night to my neighbours bin, im sure she dont mind bins are now emptied.

Bobbie12345678 · 18/03/2026 13:44

On my street and other streets I have lived on before, once you put your bin out you are saying you are done with it. Everyone is happy for people to fill them up. It is the easiest, most low energy ‘good neighbour’ thing to do.
If you moved to our street and came around complaining we would all think you were crazy.

Growlybear83 · 18/03/2026 13:45

@Erin1975It would potentially be an issue in my area. If the lids on our bins aren’t COMPLETELY closed, the binmen won’t empty them. Our bins are always full each week, and usually have to be squashed down to make sure the lids close properly, so if someone put another bag in the top, my bin wouldn’t get emptied for another two weeks.

wishfulthinking25 · 18/03/2026 13:46

Naws · 18/03/2026 12:43

"Excuse me. Can you message me or knock on my door to ask if I'll allow you to put a rubbish bag in my bin, that's just about to be emptied anyway? Cheers."

Very embarrassing for you, but I guess that's what you're going to have to say to the neighbours.

Agreed. I’d defo chuckle if I got that message!

GasPanic · 18/03/2026 13:54

People are likely to get more aggressive with others using their bins due to councils getting more infrequent in collecting them and more aggressive at policing what goes in them.

"All bins are for everyone" works fine right up until the point some piss taker turns up and decides to fill all the bins with rubble that the council won't take.

ThisChirpyFox · 18/03/2026 13:54

Do you really give a shit? Genuinely?

...I don’t think it’s really a big deal.

First two replies.

Obviously the op gives a shit and thinks it's a big deal otherwise they'd not have posted. It being a cheeky fucker. I have my bins cleaned and tie up my waste and recycle and don't want people putting their crap in my bins, which could leak/stink to high heaven. Plus if I was penalised for my bin lid not closing because someone else decided to be a cheeky fucker if be pissed.

If they asked that's another thing - id either say yes no problem or no I was just about to put my own rubbish in or no sorry. But not to ask is rude.

The problem with this is you always get some saying have you not got anything better to worry about or it would bother me. Well if it doesn't - great! It's probably most of these people who's be the cheeky fuckers to do this, along with parking on your drive, walking past your house on your land as a cut through etc

Friendlygingercat · 18/03/2026 13:54

So long as the rubbish is in the correct bin and not foul or drippy I can never see why some people are so precious about their bins. Ive done it myself (after dark) when I just had a small amount of rubbbish and I didnt want the trouble of putting a bin out and dragging it back. Is your neighbour elderly or disabled?

RightOnTheEdge · 18/03/2026 13:59

Naws · 18/03/2026 12:44

🤣🤣

firstofallimadelight · 18/03/2026 14:01

I’d let it go but if it happens again I’d WhatsApp and explain weight issue and ask them not to do it again

amber763 · 18/03/2026 14:03

It was a bin waiting for collection already. I cannot imagine being upset by this!

Luckyingame · 18/03/2026 14:04

Any other problems in your life, OP?

IvyEvolveFree · 18/03/2026 14:05

Lots of what’s yours is mine people on this thread. Generally the attitude of people who never have anything to offer themselves. I’ve had a massive family move in next door and this is the type of thing they do, along with claiming all communal space etc. It’s top class cheeky fuckery.

You would if you lived where I do and it meant your bin wouldn’t be emptied because the extra bag had stopped your bin mid from closing completely.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/03/2026 14:08

Never heard of refusing a bin as too heavy

mine is always heavy as slowly getting rid of ex husbands crap

I also think it’s fair game to put rubbish in a bin that is on the road ready to be emptied

There’s nothing to suggest there was so much rubbish it didn’t close though, such a non issue.

WallaceinAnderland · 18/03/2026 14:10

The issue is that I didnt have space for my bag

So what did you do with your bag of rubbish?

Totally agree. People just don’t have any manners.
