Neighbour has put their rubbish in my bin

Toucan22 · 18/03/2026 12:35

Me and my neighbours all put our bins on the corner of the cul de sac for collection. Bin day is today and I went to put something in last minute before they collect and one of my neighbours has put a big bag of rubbish in my bin. I'm a bit annoyed tbh, wouldnt you ask first? I also dont know whats in this big bag that they are disposing of in my name. I wouldnt have minded if they were struggling for space and asked me but I think its cheeky to just do it.

So much angst for such a minor issue.

TenderChicken · 18/03/2026 12:37

I can't imagine getting mad about this. I doubt there's a dead body in there.

If there is it definitely makes sense to put it in someone else’s bin rather than their own though.

Laserwho · 18/03/2026 12:48

It would annoy me. Frequently the bin is not emptied at all so we have to wait 2 more weeks for collection. That bag of rubbish would prevent me from putting my own rubbish in for the next two weeks

4wardlooking · 18/03/2026 12:53

@Toucan22 oh no! 😱 God forbid!

Julietta05 · 18/03/2026 12:53

Don't you have any other problems or things to do?! You not only think about minor totally irrelevant thing but you then post about it online?! Pick up a book or go for a walk.

susiedaisy1912 · 18/03/2026 12:54

Yeh it’s bloody cheeky. A women in the news recently got fined for chucking dead batteries in the bin, they could be adding anything to your wheelie bin.

justaboymummy · 18/03/2026 12:56

Toucan22 · 18/03/2026 12:37

Yes. Its cheeky. I would have definitely at least sent a quick message. I've got two new neighbours so I think its one of them. Never had any problems before. I hope they dont intend on doing this every week!!

Every week? Jesus where do you live that gets their bins emptied every week??
Honestly OP I wouldn't make a big deal. It's a bag of rubbish and surely it's better in a bin rather than dumped on the roadside where the binmen may not collect it?

Naws · 18/03/2026 12:57

Toucan22 · 18/03/2026 12:45

I thought that was a common thing, its been the case for everywhere I've lived and I've lived in lots of different places in the UK.

No it isn't.

But that wasn't what you were annoyed about anyway according to your OP.

It was because they didn't ask.

Cheersmedears123 · 18/03/2026 12:57

They weigh your bin?! Blimey.

Generally though I’d say it’s fine as long as you had space to put your rubbish.

BeHappyNotBitter · 18/03/2026 12:58

Did it get emptied though?

rwalker · 18/03/2026 13:04

If it was on my drive in d be fuming
but when they’ve been placed ready for collection at the top of the street non issue

Jaxhog · 18/03/2026 13:06

Growlybear83 · 18/03/2026 12:46

I would have just taken the bag out and put it on the pavement

Next to their bin.

It MAY be just normal rubbish, but then again it might not be. If they do it once, they'll do it again.

gamerchick · 18/03/2026 13:06

Careful OP. It'll be cars parking outside of your house next. Grin

I agree it's irritating. But as long as it's not a restricted item that means the bin won't be emptied. I'd probably not bristle for long.

Anonanonanonagain · 18/03/2026 13:11

I would be annoyed and have been over the years in fact for one reason a neighbour was putting a sneakt bag of general waste into my recyling bin the odd time and the bin company stopped taking it and for another my general waste bin charges are based on weight.

Maddy70 · 18/03/2026 13:12

Who cares? Honestly get a hobby or something

AgnesMcDoo · 18/03/2026 13:12

You haven’t clarified whether this has actually caused any problems?

Did you still have room for your extra bag?

Did your bin still get collected?

Have you been arrested for improper disposal of a dead body ‘in your name’?

HoratioBum · 18/03/2026 13:14

Round our way the bin men go round ahead of the truck - sometimes by a good half hour or so- moving rubbish from bin to bin, so they will (e.g) fill up half empty bins with bags from others, meaning that there are fewer bins to pull out when the truck comes round. Could it be something like that? Just before you go accusing anyone.

I wouldn't even give this a second thought... neighbour has probably ran out of space, and there's space in yours.. what's the big deal?

this is what I am wondering.. what is the big deal about this? I don't get it...

Rubbish is rubbish and they obviously couldn’t fit it in theirs. I can see why you would be annoyed though still. My neighbour did that when they needed to get rid of things that really should have gone down the dump, but too lazy to do it despite having a bf with more vehicles than brains. The way I see it, we are all paying council tax so if for example you needed to fill your bin up that week, I take it we are talking about black bin not recycling? As that’s what I mean.
Then where am I supposed to put mine, if my neighbour has filled theirs and mine up 🤔

No they havent been yet.

YANBU if somebody else filled your bin and there wasn't enough room for your own rubbish. I would take the bag out and place it nearby, although our local council regard that as fly tipping. They will either take it or go through it to see if there is any clues as to who left it, and then do them for fly tipping.

It does affect you if it means that you can't get rid of your own rubbish.

It does affect you if they put something in there that shouldn't be there.

Maray1967 · 18/03/2026 13:18

LittleCrumblyBiscuit · 18/03/2026 12:45

Take it back out and put yours in.

That is exactly what I would do.

Unless you have agreed with your neighbours to use your bins communally, to just put your rubbish in someone else’s bin is extremely rude.

The issue is that I didnt have space for my bag and I just think its cheeky. I wouldnt dream of doing that, I would've at least sent a quick text to say "Ive run out of space, do you mind if I put an extra bag in your bin?" And yes it does worry me what they are disposing of in my name if its stuff thats not supposed to go in a black bin.

OP if this is your biggest problem you must have a wonderful quiet life.

Get a grip. It's a bin and it was already out. It's not a recurring issue - put your rubbish in someone else's bin if needed. Sorted.

Why on earth would this be her biggest issue? Was there a memo that only one's most important concern can be posted?

I know you said if but you can't seriously think it might be could you?

Where I use to live neighbours would ask in the WhatsApp group, it's only common courtesy. We have to put our bins out before a certain time which I do but will often add a bag if they are collected late and I'd be pretty pissed off if the bin had been filled by someone else
