Neighbour has put their rubbish in my bin

Toucan22 · 18/03/2026 12:35

Me and my neighbours all put our bins on the corner of the cul de sac for collection. Bin day is today and I went to put something in last minute before they collect and one of my neighbours has put a big bag of rubbish in my bin. I'm a bit annoyed tbh, wouldnt you ask first? I also dont know whats in this big bag that they are disposing of in my name. I wouldnt have minded if they were struggling for space and asked me but I think its cheeky to just do it.

Yes. Its cheeky. I would have definitely at least sent a quick message. I've got two new neighbours so I think its one of them. Never had any problems before. I hope they dont intend on doing this every week!!

Why's is affecting you though?

Kept it in my house, what else was I meant to do? I'm going to have to take it to the tip as the black bins won't be emptied now for 2 weeks. I'm going to put a message on the neighbour WhatsApp group and say please can this not happen again without asking first.

Why did you put your bin out when you still had rubbish in the house that needed to go in the bin?

Surely you empty all house bins and collect all rubbish first, then put it in your bin and then put your bin out, not put your bin out first and then cart your leftover rubbish from your house to the end of your cul de sac?

Thechaseison71 · 18/03/2026 16:15

Toucan22 · 18/03/2026 14:44

Why would I lie about that 😂I dont use other people's bins, therefore thought it would be pretty obvious I had to bring the rubbish back inside.

Well why not put the " offending" rubbish in a different bin the to got your own extra rubbish in your own bin.

Honestly what a palaver

Summergarden · 18/03/2026 16:23

Surely just check the other bins and any that are emptier just pop your bag in there?

I can never understand possessiveness over wheelie bins, especially on bin emptying day. Life is too short!

Really? And risk the bin men not collecting it and it sitting there or being ripped open abs rubbish blowing everywhere for a week. All for the sake of not wanting to give away empty bin space that you’re not using?

If you’d read my follow up posts, you would have seen that I’ve said twice that my binmen will not empty a bin unless the top is completely closed - if it’s sticking up even by an inch, then they will leave it, so we would have rotting rubbish for up to a month. Now that we have fortnightly collections rather than weekly, our bin is always full to the top and usually has to be squashed down to get the lid fully closed. I wouldn’t be amused if some selfish twat stuck a bag in the top of my already full bin and it didn’t then get collected because the lid was not fully closed.

Boomer55 · 18/03/2026 16:36

It’s not really something to get arsy about.

Holdmybeermoment · 18/03/2026 16:39

Disposing of in your name 😂😂😂. Omg.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 18/03/2026 16:46

Pffft. Do update us when you get a fine for putting batteries, a dead dog and uranium in your black bin. Not to mention the fine for it being overweight!

Thoughts and prayers x

Moonnstarz · 18/03/2026 16:51

If the bins were already out to be collected (you say you take them all to the corner) your neighbour probably thought you were done with yours and seeing as they had another bag it wouldn't be an issue to pop in yours.
I would in future keep my bin wherever it is usually kept and only put out once I know there isn't any more I want to put in.

EmeraldRoulette · 18/03/2026 16:59

I'm amazed at the number of people saying it's no big deal

And the way the vote has gone

I've only ever lived in areas where they will refuse to take your bins for any reason whatsoever. So we would always ask permission. And my elderly mother has actually found people inspecting the contents of her bin - it was after dark and they were right outside her door so she was really freaked out.

People living in areas where the council AREN'T horrible about bins, you'd be flabbergasted if you knew how many people end up with a bin lock to avoid this kind of thing!

I can't imagine being so relaxed about bins! It drives me nuts because it is basically under ending up in the same place. But individual councils just make life very difficult.

ChamonixMountainBum · 18/03/2026 17:00

Empty your bin onto the lawns of the two suspected offenders. However, be sure to do this at 11pm at night in your underwear whilst sporting a dark ages leper bell around your neck. Also remember to empty a jar of peanut butter (crunchy) into your pants before doing this. When your neighbours look through the window to see what is going on reach into your pants and scoop up a handful of said peanut butter and start slowly licking your fingers while smiling (channel your inner Private Pyle from Full Metal Jacket) at your neighbours. Then laugh manically and run down the street. They will stay clear of your bins after that.

See, you laugh now, but it'll be different next week when someone sticks their binbag in YOUR bin. I envisage a knock at the door and the council bin contents inspector standing there:

"It's been noticed that you had four empty cans of Special Brew and a copy of the Sun in your bin this week, Mrs Holdmybeermoment..."

UserMcUserMc · 18/03/2026 17:09

It's fly tipping.

as others have said you don't know what's in there.

Why's is affecting you though?

Because it's other people's filth and you don't know what's in there. We don't put any wet or food matter into the black bin and all containers are rinsed and everything is in black bags so the bin is basically fairly clean, maggot free and doesn't smell. I wouldn't want stranger's rubbish like used sanitary towels, condoms, nappies, food waste etc that belonged to others in my bin. It stinks if you aren't careful as few are. Plus if it contains 'fineable' material like vape batteries etc you may be in trouble.

Why is it in your bin? because either theirs is full or they are trying to get rid of illegal rubbish. That happened to us once - a bag full of builders shit was put in our bin and the bin men refused to take it.

It's like arseholes who put tiny little bags of dog shit into the bin. I don't want your stinking dog shit in my bin. It falls down the side of the black bags as it is lifted and the light weight means it doesn't tip out. So you get left with a stinking bag of dog shit in the bin.

Moellen54 · 18/03/2026 17:39

How identifiable is your bin? I probably couldnt pick our general waste bin apart from several others

Why? There was room in your bin.

Unless it was smelly / wet / gross rubbish, does it matter?

Edited

Is it really going to stink in the hour before the binmen come? Could see point inf they added it a week before in your bin

nevernotmaybe · 18/03/2026 17:52

Honestly it's the time I don't care at all. If I put my bin out, it's collection time, and there's space feel free to use it as long as it doesn't leave permanent mess in the bin and isn't just things that can't be taken clearly on top that threatens thr bin being taken at all.

But if you always put it out before you ha e finished filling it, consider not doing if you want to be helpful, or make it clear to everyone you do that and the bin doesn't just have wasted space that week ever.

Or if you are really protective of the empty space in your bin, make that clear and tell people never to use it unless they go round and speak to you first.

ShrubLover · 18/03/2026 17:55

That would annoy me. Our council go through our bins and put stickers on them if they've got the 'wrong' type of rubbish in. I also don't want someone else's pet poo/pet food/baby poo/used sanitary towels/used condoms/incontinence products etc etc in my bin. Use your own bloody bin. I couldn't care less if that makes me uptight, so be it 😁.

UserMcUserMc · 18/03/2026 17:57

Is it really going to stink in the hour before the binmen come?

Yes it does but that's not the only point. It is fly tipping and you have no idea what the hell is in there. Bins are unhygenic anyway but your bin is your unhygenic stuff. Who wants a strangers filth and waste their bin? It could have shit dripping out of it for all you know.

If you are a household that takes care to ensure the bin is not maggoty or full of wet dripping stuff, it's even worse. Without any reason whatsoever, someone else fly tipping their waste into your bin without asking is unlawful and revolting.

topsecretcyclist · 18/03/2026 18:58

I went to put an extra bag in my bin on collection and my neighbour looked very embarrassed as he told me he'd put a bag in because his was full. I didn't care as there are no rules on lids being closed etc, and I'd rather that than a street full of rubbish.

I wouldn’t say it was obvious from your post. I assumed you had added it to your bin as there was still space.
I have also lived in a couple of different places in the UK (midlands tbf) and never heard of the weight thing.
I have definitely put things in my neighbours bin on collection day. Didn’t really see the big deal as I assumed it would be emptied imminently and that they had already disposed their rubbish.
