Should I ask my DS and his girlfriend for money

DiaryofWimpy · 17/03/2026 19:43

My DS2 has moved his girlfriend in with her 2 cats.

Obviously it’s another person using the washing machine,,TV, gas and electricity they are both 22 and don’t work but get benefits.

Do you think I’m being unreasonable asking them for money?

But that’s not the thread

I said earlier and someone else did as as well. That now they are a couple living together they should be on a joint claim so will be less money between them

They moved in together this week

For how long tho ?

in general

not just my ex but means anyone who applies will imm get it regardless

the country can’t go on forever giving everyone extra money

My lwcra is stopping in 8 weeks. I was given an end date when I was awarded it.

Are they looking for work. Yes they should be paying especially as they are on benefits. State money is supposed to be a stop gap until you work

They are going to pay. The OP updated the thread

No one is ‘entitled’ to benefits for no good reason. These 2 young people haven’t paid a penny into the tax & NI coffers, yet think they are entitled to benefits from the public purse? Absolutely fk that! I don’t think ANYONE should qualify for benefits unless they have contributed a certain amount to the public purse.

20 years ago we didn’t have hundreds of thousands of shirkers on benefits for
‘anxiety’. I will vote for any party that promises to crack down on scroungers. This is a big part of why this country is going to shit.

They are because they are poor. That's the way it works -not because of your beliefs. Hth

If I hadn't been able to claim benefits three years ago when I had my breakdown I would have been homeless. But you just keep shouting no one should get benefits

MyLimePoet · 18/03/2026 19:15

There absolutely were people on long term sick 20 years ago. And it was easier then to be on sickness benefits long term than it is now. All people had to do was hand in fit notes and they would be put on sickness benefits indefinitely. It's not like that now. The dwp can overrule a GP. It's harder to claim. Please - if you are going to slate people who have mental health and who are on benefits get your facts right

MyLimePoet · 18/03/2026 19:26

And don't call me a shirker either -, despite the fact that I have been really unwell over the last 8 years I've just finished an online degree (which is allowed when you are on Uc)

I have a friend who has a serious skin condition and she doesn't even get lcwra. She doesn't work. She's poor. She spent her childhood in and out of hospital.

Her child has additional needs. Another friend has three children who are disabled and she gets benefits for them - her partner works full time.

Stop calling people scroungers and shirkers when you know nothing about peoples individual circumstances.

I honestly have had enough of being name called on here when people don't know the half

They apparently have anxiety so can’t work.

He asked if she could bring her cat, she brought 2.

Yes I could do need the money.

I’d give them ‘anxiety’! I’d kick the lazy, workshy pair out, so they’d really have something to be anxious about!

Will you not appeal

if you need it

I have no issues with anyone who needs help having it

just more those who don’t iyswim

The mother is in no place to do that, though. She's on benefits due to anxiety, too

PlumpHobbit · 18/03/2026 19:47

Why can't the gf stay somewhere else. I can understand your son living with you as its his home, paying keep of course as hes an adult but you have no obligation to the glue especially as she sounds like a free loader.

Is there really not a job either of them could do 🙄

And the fact he didn't even ask about moving her in

Id be inclined to say actually no it isn't ok, does she not have her own parents she can move back in with

Maybe not living together already might actually make them find a job so they can start saving, currently they have it far too good

The gf would MAYBE be tolerable if both were working hard and saving for their own place but atm absolutely not

Convenient both apparently have anxiety and cant work...

PlumpHobbit · 18/03/2026 19:51

Also them being unhappy about having to pay and throwing back at you that you have money, they are absolute CFs especially the GF, bloody cheeky mare its not her family's home even shes playing everyone for a mug

Its great your son likes her company, but as neither work, they can meet up during the day, somewhere else, then she can go back to her own home

As pp's have said id want proof they are actually trying to get themselves into a position so they can work

She has bipolar. Not anxiety

No. I was turned down three times before I got it and I won't subject myself to that horrible process again

She said she also has generalised anxiety disorder.

No I can’t work. As I said I have bipolar and generalised anxiety disorder. I get ADP. And ESA

They are only poor because they’re not working. They need to get off their fat, lazy arses and stop scrounging from the rest of us.

Can't work at all? Oh, I give up, and I'm out...

Absolute bollocks. We did not have the amount of workshy scroungers that we do now, continually bleating about ‘mental health’ because they are too lazy to work and think society should support them.

She keeps changing her story! First of all the son and gf only had ‘anxiety’ and only later did she decide that he is also disabled.

i have no problem with genuinely disabled people getting appropriate benefits. Anxiety is not a disability.

Where have I said disabled people are lazy and fat? I haven’t said anything about disabled people, so give your head a wobble. But people who sit around for years on benefits because they can’t be bothered working are lazy.

Not bollocks on any level

MyLimePoet · 18/03/2026 20:40

Oh well. Sorry I was suicidal in 2020 and was told I was fit to work and once more in 2023. And 2024 I must have missed the memo that I'm on UC therefore I'm a scrounger - thanks to a series of life events that I wouldn't wish on another living soul. I must be faking my ptsd too

I actually took a break from UC for just over two years because my flat had to be sold. For peanuts but I had some breathing space from being on benefits as I was so unwell..

I'm not workshy nor am I on the beg

TheBlueKoala · 18/03/2026 21:09

@DiaryofWimpy You said you got Adp and Esa. But that will be maximum 800 per month. How do you live on that? Do you get UC as well? Make them contribute more
