Should I ask my DS and his girlfriend for money

DiaryofWimpy · 17/03/2026 19:43

My DS2 has moved his girlfriend in with her 2 cats.

Obviously it’s another person using the washing machine,,TV, gas and electricity they are both 22 and don’t work but get benefits.

Do you think I’m being unreasonable asking them for money?

They are because they are poor. That's the way it works -not because of your beliefs. Hth

They aren’t working! Of course they are poor!

Not bollocks on any level

Definitely not bollocks. People have been complaining about the ‘workshy’ and ‘scroungers’ since I was growing up in the ‘80s. Not a new thing at all. They wouldn’t have mentioned ‘mental health’, though, as there was a massive stigma around that.

Remember Norman Tebbit telling the unemployed to get ‘on their bikes’?

Happinessistheanswer · 18/03/2026 22:27

It was a much smaller group back then. They were mocked by the media and back then they were defined by the stereotypical pink velour tracksuit, badly dyed hair, fag in mouth swearing at her kids.

Now the group is more varied and growing exponentially and untouchable as far as the media is concerned due to their "human rights to live how they want."

Had the misfortune of reading this thread. An entire household that doesn't work due to "anxiety".

It's just gone too far. There's a difference between trying to work and just refusing to saying "oh I can't it's too difficult"

MyLimePoet · 19/03/2026 01:49

Well I'm sure by the morning everyone else will have figured out the way to deal with us scroungers. Someone will have dropped a high powered lawnmower off to me so that I can go running round my neighbours gardens like a demented cartoon character cutting their grass whether they like it or not

Then I'll pootle down the street shouting "mind your self" I've got a big bag of cement to fill in a pothole as I pull out my litter picker from my bag and go running around to see if there's a neighbours bin to shove litter in.

Only stopping at the local shop for some irn bru to refuel while I make my way to the nearest park to do some garden maintenance to keep the likes of Reform and Restore Britain happy. Gotta keep myself out of that workhouse somehow.

Before shouting at someone saying - there better be yellow stickers left in my local supermarket because I'm not even getting an extra tenner to be Jack of all trades.

Tomorrow they better give me a hat saying "make Scotland great again" - and some new tasks to do as I'm not really that great at potholes - phew. The chief executive of my local council slept well last night on his six figure salary while I was filling in those pesky potholes - but a girls got to do what a girls got to do to get those benefits.

No, you had the misfortune of misreading the thread. The OP doesn’t have anxiety, she has bipolar disorder.

Of course they are It isnt difficult to google the statistics from ONS for UK.. 13.5% of households have no adults in work (latest ONS-style estimates for 2024)

Children become what they see around them. You get communities were adults don’t work.

Plenty of people with bipolar disorder hold down jobs. It is manageable with medication. Shouldn’t automatically be a reason to claim benefits.

I have no opinion on whether the OP should be working or not, as I don’t have access to her medical history and don’t know how her particular bipolar disorder affects her every day life (it manifests differently in everyone). I was merely correcting the PP’s assertion that the entire household doesn’t work due to anxiety.

DiaryofWimpy · 19/03/2026 07:58

Since starting this thread I’ve joined a recruitment agency for administration and clerical staff. Let’s hope seeing me working will spur my son on. I haven’t disclosed my bipolar as yet I’ll wait until the interview. I don’t know how il do as I shake really badly when trying to do things such as typing meter readings or anything stressful but won’t know until I try.

You don't need to be a "scrounger" you could write scripts for comedy programmes !!

That is brilliant and well done for taking that step to sign up with an agency. You don’t have to volunteer your medical history at an interview, although they might send you a health questionnaire as part of the recruitment process.

Best of luck with the interview!

Furbabylady500 · 19/03/2026 08:39

Hopefully it will encourage him.. I would say bear in mind if he’s seen you not working most of his life it may take a while to undo a certain mindset which has been developed growing up. But we can’t change the past only the future, so regardless this is still a good move not only for your son, but for yourself.

I hope you find a position soon that works for you and either way - at least you’re trying. That’s all you can do.

oh and it’s up to you of course but you don’t even need to disclose the bipolar at the agency interview . Personally I didn’t disclose any conditions until I start the actual job.

Miskast · 19/03/2026 09:10

You don’t have to disclose your bipolar OP unless you feel comfortable sharing it.
I didn’t tell my employer for 6 months as I wanted them to get to know me first but there is far more understanding now about mental health, so you might feel more confident about having an open and honest
conversation about your diagnosis.
I think it is fantastic that you are planning your future. Well done 👍

@DiaryofWimpy You said you got Adp and Esa. But that will be maximum 800 per month. How do you live on that? Do you get UC as well? Make them contribute more

Some people on benefits live on a lot less than 800 quid a month

You shouldn't need to disclose at interview. There might be paperwork where they ask about mental health issues but lots of people with mental health issues work. I wish you well.

She does say she has anxiety disorder as well. It's just an entire household that refuses to work.
