AIBU to regret leaving a doormat behind when moving house?

Inspired by another thread about leaving light shades when moving house.

I left an outdoor mat when I moved. Figured, it's just a mat and would be lovely for the new tenants to have one less thing to worry about.

What I didn't appreciate was how impossible it would prove to replace said mat. It's since been discontinued and no one else is silly enough to get rid, so nothing on the resale sites.

I've since purchased many disappointing ones and have almost given up.

What's your one seemingly non-important thing you left behind and lived to regret?

YABU - It's just a mat, it wasn't .
YANBU - Regret some things.

I feel you! We left a rug when we sold our old house. Wasn't worth any money but can I find the same rug now? Can I heck!!

Aside from asking for it back you gotta let it go before it drives you bananas!

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 15/03/2026 15:48

It was from ikea and made to last.
It had tiny bristles that would clean your shoes and the dirt would fall in between groves hidden by the bristles, so would always be clean. Not too soft, not too rigid, just perfect.

Also meant my indoor mat was never dirty after using the outdoor one.

I daydream about it when cleaning the indoor mat. Can't even look at the outdoor one, though no fault of it's own, it annoys me no end.
Had to settle for it after many other disappointing ones.

Yes, there are worse things in the world, we know!

It's only once in a while when I look into the distance and wonder if it's being appreciated better than I did, or if it was flung into the skip, never to be seen again.
My poor mat.

Go back and swipe it in the night 😆

Was it like this one?

This is what plays on my mind too!! It eas a beautiful rug but definitely not to everyone's taste. In my mind I have convinced myself they love it and adore and worship it daily - the alternative hurts too much 😄

When I sold my last house the buyers were really keen to keep my living room wall unit.
I had designed it myself, paid a lot for it and really loved it because it was actually the first real " grown up" furniture If ever had, but I was so desperate for the deal to go through I agreed to leave it for them.

I love my new house, but often feel a bit of a mug when looking at my current MDF flat pack units.

And by massive coincidence I once ended up on a work zoom meeting with the buyer and had to sit through the whole thing smiling whilst my heart ached for my beautiful wooden units I could see her sitting in front of.

We're on the same page. Hopefully they're both being appreciated😅.
Sounds like a lovable rug.

Thank you for the link, but that just about almost triggered me. Nothing like my beautiful mat. Sigh.

I can never understand why ordinary functional products have to be continually redesigned - you’d think they’d get to a point where something like a mat was perfect and that would become the template against which future mats would be created. But no.

For a moment I feared you'd say they chucked it. Hope they realise how lucky they are to have it.

Totally agree. I had a favourite peppermint Burts Bees shower gel that was discontinued for reasons unknown. I still daydream about that one too.

I had some floor length IKEA cotton curtains that I had dyed cerise pink, really nice thick cotton. I had done everything for the move (apart from DS had partly sorted his room out) whilst working full time. It was a stressful time and I was exhausted, and instead of packing the curtains I used them to clean the floor of the flat I was leaving, then threw them in the bin (usually I’d have taken to charity shop if I didn’t want something). I soon realised they would have been perfect in my new flat and that Ikea don’t do such lovely thick plain cotton curtains any more, the quality has deteriorated. I still regularly regret binning them.

Capitalism innit.

I also left a doormat which I really regretted. Like you I couldn't find one to replace it. I also left behind the draining rack which I also regret. It was actually stainless steel so less prone to rust. It wasn't expensive but haven't seen one to replace it. It was UK made and lastly my dining room light. The door mats would be probably done by now but I would still have the light and draining rack but I'm over it now.

Oh no, the stress of the move sure doesn't help.

Was it a black AstroTurf style mat?

Ah, the good door mats. Great you've been able to let go.
Good way of looking at it as having had been used up by now.

Yes!!! That's the one. They replaced it with a softer, cheaper version which was not a patch on the original.

I left a large outdoor plant pot with an expensive fake topiary in - we all walked past it 100s of times during moving day as it was by the front door but no one picked it up! It would have been perfect for several things I’ve needed to re-pot since moving here…

likelysuspect · 15/03/2026 18:05

I wouldnt have left it!!

I plan to take all sorts of things that may seem inconsequential, I'll replace them with other bits and bobs but I want my things!

Easterbunnygettingawrapping · 15/03/2026 18:07

When i left exh I had to leave my ddog. Get a grip op.

Alaap · 15/03/2026 18:10

My blueberry bush, I couldn’t take it with me but I still miss it!

the person who I bought my current house off did not have to worry about this as they took everything including the taps and the gate from the garden?! but left their broken appliances Hmm
