AIBU to regret leaving a doormat behind when moving house?

Inspired by another thread about leaving light shades when moving house.

I left an outdoor mat when I moved. Figured, it's just a mat and would be lovely for the new tenants to have one less thing to worry about.

What I didn't appreciate was how impossible it would prove to replace said mat. It's since been discontinued and no one else is silly enough to get rid, so nothing on the resale sites.

I've since purchased many disappointing ones and have almost given up.

What's your one seemingly non-important thing you left behind and lived to regret?

YABU - It's just a mat, it wasn't .
YANBU - Regret some things.

Well, if people are leaving dangly live wires, it's game on! 😅.

Oh my word, we certainly won't be doing that! Crappy plastic but absolutely safe ceiling roses, I'm just not leaving my only available from Germany light fitting (no idea where we got it) or my bonkers Tiffany style shade behind!

PedanticPrincess · 16/03/2026 22:37

I was really annoyed when I realised I’d left a pretty sun catcher on the back door and a metre rule that I’d tucked away, when we moved. I’ve finally got over it 17 years later!

Agree, and sorry about your plants and planters. Moving is such a pain without the added stress of unwillingly parting with precious items.

And big planters are so expensive!

Thank you...and really hope you get your doormat back (or at the very least, a decent replacement!) Great thread, btw 😁

I misread you'd finally got it after 17 years, you were about to win the thread! 😅.
Sorry about yours, why is it always the irreplaceable stuff!

Thank you 😊. Loving the solidarity ❤️.

I'm hopeful but also scared of the disappointment if it's long gone 🤞.
Some great recommendations on here though, which I'll try.

Full dinner sets cost so much too. Hope he's at least using it.

Do you remember anything about the pattern? I bet someone on here could track down replacements

It’s mad that I’ve just stumbled upon this thread as only minutes ago I was yearning for the porch wall lantern, we left at my Dad’s house while clearing it out after he died.

I follow someone who makes stained glass pieces, absolutely beautiful artwork. I just love stained glass and the porch lantern at my Dad’s was half stained glass, it was really lovely.

23 years later and I still regret leaving it there. It probably ended up in a skip 🥺

I actually have the matching curtains somewhere (he didn’t want those because I doubt he could have sold them for as much as all the china).

I must dig them out of the loft and do a reverse image search.

Sorry about your dad.

Oh no, your beautiful lantern, with sentimental value too!
Hopefully it's being appreciated or at least was given to charity.

I have a few stories, but they are a reverse
My mum moved, she is a very keen gardener and moved from an old farmhouse with an acre garden and 7 compost bins to a modern house with a much smaller garden that was 100% grass.
In the 6 months before she moved, every time she came to mine she brought 4 bags full of compost, until I had 60 compost bags atthe end of my garden. The 7 compost heaps were empty!
Once she moved in I had to return the favour and bit by bit take it all to her new house.
She also took 200 pots, she had dug up and split all her favourite perennials, and took cuttings as well. To be fair you couldn't tell anything was missing from the garden and the new people were not gardeners.

We helped my friend move. She had cancer and due to complicated situation, she was living in her new house but trying to sell the old one. Not much left at the old one, but when they completed, dh and I went round to clear out the last bits. She wasn't well enough.
She gave me a list and said don't bother with the garden.
Well there was a lot of stuff in the garden.
So we bothered, picked up nice pots, an arch, some chairs and tools etc.

They all sat on my patio for 6 months and I said if she ever wanted any of them back they were hers. Once she was doing better she was at mine one day and said is that my big blue pot, oh yes please, thank you for saving it!
Very glad I did.

Wow, that's impressive! Talk about thinking and planning ahead, I'm in 👏 😅.

Aww, lovely. Well done for helping and bothering. Glad she got better too. 🪴

I am especially missing my lovely bee-shaped door knocker, and the little spherical birdhouse that I left when I moved recently!

Hobsonschoiceofhob · 17/03/2026 16:11

i really regret leaving my Lakeland wall storage grid system as it was ace and they don’t now sell it and it was a gift. Still miss it now.

Hobsonschoiceofhob · 17/03/2026 16:20

But I also want a bee door knocker now !

Always things that are not available anymore. Hope it's at least still being used.

Lovely, that's the way to do it. ❤️

It's just nice to be nice, in a world full of nastiness.
I'd loved my old house and hadn't really wanted to move but we were planning a family and needed more room, so I wanted the new owners to feel positive about the place as I remember that feeling when I first walked into it on Moving Day and it just felt like home.
Also, I'm a great big soppy sod.

Unfortunately not enough soppy sod's about. ❤️

@FlowersforyourchocolateprettypleaseCould you share a picture of the original doormat or something similar please? I really want one or something similar too now 😂

I don't have it but it was close to this one.
They've changed it since and more than doubled the price for less quality though.

I'm now wondering if the lesser quality one was a one off though 🤔.
