AIBU to regret leaving a doormat behind when moving house?

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 15/03/2026 15:43

Inspired by another thread about leaving light shades when moving house.

I left an outdoor mat when I moved. Figured, it's just a mat and would be lovely for the new tenants to have one less thing to worry about.

What I didn't appreciate was how impossible it would prove to replace said mat. It's since been discontinued and no one else is silly enough to get rid, so nothing on the resale sites.

I've since purchased many disappointing ones and have almost given up.

What's your one seemingly non-important thing you left behind and lived to regret?

YABU - It's just a mat, it wasn't .
YANBU - Regret some things.

When I left our last bought house I left behind double curtain poles that allowed for voiles and curtains with voiles and silk curtains. I should have taken them - £300 a window replaced with £80 tat. It was also an old house so had visited reclamation yards etc -expensive features of the bathroom (around £5K) were ripped out for a 1k at most toilet and sink. If I sold now I would take anything of value I had deliberately sourced. Eg I would replace a light fitting costing hundreds with a single bulb and lightshade if it fitted my new home.

This is the kind of thread I thoroughly approve of. Dull, relatable, strangely comforting....with the frisson of some potential door mat rescue mission/heist.

Sorry about your mat though. I lost lots of possessions due to my ex. It's the quirky ones you miss.

Oh how annoying! Especially as you go into IKEA now and they rarely seem to update product lines - Hemnes anyone?

Sad about your old gate, some people are such heathens.

Definitely take these gates if you move (but tell the buyers) I'd be so upset to turn
up & just find them gone of replaced with some modern monstrosity.

I'll be removing and replacing them before we list the house - I'd never do something to a buyer that I wouldn't want done to me.
I'm the soppy sort of seller who left a bouquet of flowers and a welcome to your home card when we sold our old house 22 years ago.

I just want to say thank you to OP for a brilliant thread, interesting and (almost) non-confrontational, and for continuing to engage with posters. 😊

Im ridiculously invested in this fabled door mat.

No grooves unfortunately but it does look quite scrapy

Thank you, this is the closest and now in my basket.
Will report back, all it will take will be for me to look at it to know if it will work.

The rigidness, height and pointyness of the bristles was the magic formula. 🤞.

Or maybe this one? More expensive but seems pretty sturdy i guess?

I hate it when companies get rid of our favourite functional or delicious items. Im thinking about Cadburys Fuse - i dont eat door mats...😄

Thank you but that makes me dizzy 😅. It would be an insult to the memory of my precious mat!

Haha, never tried Cadbury fuse but they did Cadbury with cranberries which was also stopped. So now I have dairy milk with a handful of cranberries on the side 🙃.

I'd definitely take your fab curtain rail, if I were you @Cherrysoup! We've bought and sold lots of times and have some amazing thick, vintage curtain poles with lovely finials that we always tell our buyers aren't staying, although we do replace them obviously 😉

We last moved at the end of 2024, a long distance move back 'home' to England from Wales where we'd created a wonderful 0.5 acre garden from scratch. As well as loads of beautiful plants in the ground which we obviously couldn't take with us, we had several enormous (mostly stone/reconstituted stone/salt-glazed) planters which we informed our buyers were coming with us on completion day.

A pair of these were 1m high Errington Reay pots we'd picked up for a steal on eBay a few years previously. I loved them and was determined to keep them for our new (much smaller, courtyard) garden, where I imagined them being a real feature. We had work colleagues of DH help us move in two massive hired vans and from the outset I made it abundantly clear not to leave the pots behind. I was therefore incredibly upset when they announced they couldn't fit them in - annoyingly they were too huge for the car too, so had to be left behind. Our buyers weren't moving in for a week but as it was 200+ miles away we couldn't easily pop back for them and DH refused to hire another van. I still haven't got over it (only half joking!) and haven't managed to find suitable replacements yet.

Edited

Agree, and sorry about your plants and planters. Moving is such a pain without the added stress of unwillingly parting with precious items.

And big planters are so expensive!

Go and get your mat back.

Planning my strategy at this very moment.

I may well, the huge 3ft high one that my bil filled with soil and bulbs and left for us at my mil’s 3 hours away took a bit of wrangling into the car! 🤣 I’ll no doubt miss all the plastic and ceramic troughs if I don’t take them.

Well, if you.can manage the 3ft one, get them all 😅. That's impressive 👏.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 16/03/2026 21:43

A beautiful Japanese maple that had such stunning autumn foliage. However, I understand it almost certainly would have died if moved.

Also, 3 days before we moved, the handle snapped off the integrated dishwasher door (screws sheared off) and I felt really bad as I couldn't get anyone to fix it in time. I bought a new handle and left a bottle of wine and a note apologising. When I drove past 3 days later the whole kitchen was in a skip so I needn't have bothered!

Definitely taking it, it’s quite ornate/heavy. Do I have to leave something in its place?

Re the pole not being big enough, I can’t remember where I saw 2 poles joined with a screw in the middle, possibly a rented place before we bought.

You can get pole joiner things online. Better to have a pole to try and make work than no pole, or even worse, an inferior one.
Not sure if you need to leave one, but I've always found some in situ.

🤣 It was mad! I think, reading all the regretful 'left this behind' posts, I'll be taking everything! 🤣

Ouch, what a waste! Definitely worth taking the £££ stuff.
Would be happy to leave some things, but the not knowing if it would be treasured or chucked is why I'm taking my lampshades.

Haha, quite! Of all the things I gave to charity, put in the skip, gave to friends etc, it's the damn mat! Not even an indoor one at that 😅.
Sorry about your possessions, hopefully you manage to get some good replacements.

Thank you and agree.

I had a chest of drawers from there that a friend liked and bought the same.
Hers were falling apart within 6 months!
I willingly stupidly left those behind.

Ah all a long time ago now thankfully, thanks @Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease and actually I think I am in some sort of transitional phase where I want to let go of stuff. If I had the time and energy, I would have the mother of all clear outs actually!

DH left all the alcohol boxed up in a kitchen cupboard.
Went to have a celebratory drink in the new house (late in the day move) and couldn't find it anywhere
Luckily we didn't move far so he was sent round to get it back from the buyers quickly before they tucked into it

Oh, your poor maple 🍁, such a shame.
Hopefully it's still as gorgeous and not chopped down 🤞.

All that trouble only for it to be in a skip!
If only people would say as I'm sure a lot of things are left behind for their convinience.

You tried.

Good luck with the clear out 😊.
