Can't stand this attitude re prison attacks

After the murder of Ian Watkins and the assault and (very possible) death of Ian Huntley, social media and news articles have been flooded with comments such as 'Give that man a medal!!' 'Not all heroes wear capes!!'.
These people seem to forget that the killers are in prison for as equally heinous and despicable crimes as the aforementioned two. They have also most probably not attacked them over what they did, but over debts, drugs or just to gain some notoriety.

I am fed up of hearing comments like this.

OP posts:

It's usually scum attacking scum. If both died, neither would be a loss to society.

Oh I don't think anyone would disagree with you there.
I think the point of the OP was that people were saying that the man who attacked Huntley is a hero etc. He is a criminal just as bad as Huntley, and his name in the press with all the comments about how he is a hero and all the GoFundMe shit to give him money etc... how would that feel for the family of his victims?

I can never relate to this- regardless of what you’d do in reality, being so confident you would cut off your own children boggles me. I’m the opposite- I can’t imagine them doing anything that would as me walk away from them and stop caring about them. I would stand by them through anything

Hours before he went to the electric chair, Ted Bundy had two phone calls to his mother. She told him “you will always be my precious son.”

He said to her “I'm so sorry I've given you all such grief ... but a part of me was hidden all the time.” And then he said, “but the Ted Bundy you knew also existed''.

I think it’s all so unfair on his victims’ families. There was never anyone less deserving of such media coverage. Completely disgusting.

The perpetrators of the violent assaults and murders in this type of case are those who will never get out, either because they have whole life sentences or have no prospect of parole. There is no deterrent to stop them murdering other prisoners or prison staff.

Alpacajigsaw · 06/03/2026 22:38

YANBU

Social media has just made it obvious how many people are as thick as shit frankly

There is. Routine and earned privileges. The press have had a field day over Huntly having things like an X-box in his cell. They want him to sit in a cell with fuck all.

Better to have things they can work towards having. Otherwise you have people who literally have nothing at all to lose. In that case, why not take it out on fellow inmates, and staff?

Dollymylove · 06/03/2026 22:50

They've pulled his plug out. He'll be dead by morning hopefully 🤩

Jesus, have people really started a GFM for a convicted rapist and triple murderer?

I think it was further upthread that someone mentioned a GoFundMe for Huntley's attackers.
Fucking sick.

me too. i want them to live long, unhappy, miserable lives, full of fear.

They aren't though. They have very cushy lives in prison. I suspect most of these type of people feel nothing.

No one has a cushy life in prison FFS.

Eww no. He murdered a pregnant woman so I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't a target himself.

Why are so many keen to reoffend and go back to prison then?

They are all in a prison where they all are in there for awful crimes.
Still does not make it right for any of them to be attacked.
If they can be attacked, then staff can be attacked.
Their punishment is the deprivation of liberty.

They've probably got nothing on the outside

JustAnotherWhinger · 06/03/2026 23:28

I found it bizarre that people hadn’t thought for a second about who’d they’d be celebrating in their “buy the man who did it a pint” and the “man who did it should be released on the basis of his community service”.

i mean, it was never going to be someone in prison for not paying their council tax that was mixing with Huntley.

Too quick trying to be the first to post online than taking a second to think about the type of person they were celebrating.

I didn't say it was right in my replies.

Do you honestly think murderers and rapists deserve to be safe?? Their victims weren’t. I don’t really understand that viewpoint. They couldn’t live in a civilised society. I hope they live in fear of their lives tbh, isn’t that part of the punishment? If they live carefree in prison then prison is not really serving its purpose.

No, living in fear is not the punishment. Losing your freedom is the punishment.

If we regard living in fear as an appropriate part of the punishment, then it will extend to people who are unjustly convicted; prisoners on remand; people convicted of nonviolent crimes; not to mention all the prison staff.

It's not so much 'do murderers and rapists deserve to be safe?' as 'do murderers and rapists (for most serious attackers of other prisoners come into such categories) have the right to continue committing violent crimes in prison/' And I definitely think that the answer is NO.

I also feel for his and Watkins mothers, they have to live with this every day.

How do you know they're not partly responsible for how their sons turned out?

For some prisoners life inside is better than life outside.

TheKittenswithMittens · 07/03/2026 00:07

Supposedly we live in a civilised society. Ages ago, we decided that we wouldn't have the death penalty, replacing it with life in imprisonment. Nothing we do to murderers will bring their victims back. I doubt that they should live in fear, nor do I think they should have luxury.
