Can't stand this attitude re prison attacks

After the murder of Ian Watkins and the assault and (very possible) death of Ian Huntley, social media and news articles have been flooded with comments such as 'Give that man a medal!!' 'Not all heroes wear capes!!'.
These people seem to forget that the killers are in prison for as equally heinous and despicable crimes as the aforementioned two. They have also most probably not attacked them over what they did, but over debts, drugs or just to gain some notoriety.

I am fed up of hearing comments like this.

Despite their crimes prisoners also deserve to be safe. It's concerning to think how easily this can happen in prisons, imagine it was your relative who was inside.

I really don’t care tbh. Sure I’m not online whooping and cheering, but I could not care less that they’re dead. Sara Sharif’s father was a monster and recently survived an attack; he does not ‘deserve’ to feel safe ever. His daughter deserved that.

I'm torn.

I despite the fact that someone like Huntley lives at the expense of the tax payer. He is not deserving in the slightest.
At the same time I completely understand prisons need to be safe and that not everyone on prison is guilty.

That being said I do not feel an ounce of pity when the likes of him and Watkins are attacked or killed. I don't for one minute think they're sat regretting their choices everyday. That they'll suffer in that knowledge til the day they die.

Maybe my past experiences have a lot to do with the way I think.

I agree, OP.

Regardless of the crimes for which they were imprisoned, they are still somebody’s Son, Brother, Partner or former friend, and for those, we should show some respect and empathy.

We aren’t, as far as I know, abandoning thousands of years of due Legal Process in favour of the court of Social Media, and the justice that they were already in receipt of should be enough - as WE decided, as a Nation, following the execution of Derek Bentley in the 1950’s and the subsequent campaigns to end Capital punishment.

So you would be happy if an innocent person was murdered in prison because another offender decided to take the law into their own hands?

I didn’t say that at all, not sure where you got that from.

I said I don’t lose sleep over falsely accused inmates, not that I’d be happy if they died.

Because falsely accused people who are in prison are just as likely to be assaulted or murdered. If we start going down the road of accepting vigilantes murdering inmates and thinking it's OK then that is likely to happen. Which is why prisoners' safety is essential.
