Media pushing Starmer to war

Indigosky37 · 03/03/2026 05:32

Daily mails headline is “Keir Starmer accused of hand wringing and pearl clutching” and Kemi Badenoch saying he’s “scared”. Then a comment section full of “he’s a coward” “ he’s a chicken” “incompetent idiot” “an embarrassment”.

So are the media pushing Kier Starmer to take us to war then? Is that what they want, because if he did the headlines would be about how we don’t want a war. The man can’t win. But pushing for war and making out Kier to be weak for not doing it is worrying.

I think Starmer is in the middle and seen as boring by most and accused of being too left by the right and too right by the left.
Personally, I am grateful he is in charge and not eg Angela Rayner or Boris Johnson or Nigel Farage! Or Polanski or any of the other reality TV clowns who treat politics like a musical theatre stage.

It doesn't actually. It says the reverse. From the BBC - that article - An opinion poll by YouGov, external suggests far more people in Britain oppose the US's actions than support them and far more oppose the UK allowing the US to use British airbases than support that decision.

Edited

Yes, @luckylavender you are quite right.
I'm sorry I've got that wrong, especially as now I've contributed to all the misinformation already out there. Thanks for correcting it.

However there are two aspects to the poll.
One, as you have clarified, is that the majority of people here are opposed to Trump's actions in Iran.

But the second is that the majority are also opposed to Starmer's decision to allow the US to use British air bases.

This is the part of the poll that Mason cites that I find off kilter:

people on forums I've read and people I've spoken to do seem to support Starmer's nuanced approach here and do not oppose our air bases being used by the US.

So to address the op's point;
I don't think that the media are necessarily pushing Starmer to war, so much as trying to find ways for him to be seen as wrong about everything, in whatever form that may take.

More incompetent than Liz Truss? Or Boris Johnson? Nah.

Oh I think you will find that Starmer is worse than Truss and just as incompetent as Johnson.

Don't be daft. It's deeply embarrassing for the country that Truss was ever our PM - she's completely mad.

And Johnson didn't actually do anything - he just liked being PM. Utterly useless, with the morals of an alley cat.

Trump is having another go at attacking Starmer, as well as Spain.

I have lots of criticisms of Starmer but he has got this right.

We all know who controls the media

OhDear111 · 03/03/2026 23:00

Media - is not one newspaper! There is quite a strong public opinion that we want to stay quiet in this conflict. Starmer has not caved into Trump. That’s a good thing. We are gojng to have to get closer to Europe and work with them now the USA is rogue and ignores any idea of international law and the UN.

UK came out rather well out of it, well, Starmer, it was aimed at Starmer. It was just a slide comment, " he is not Churchill".

Spain, oh Spain! Spain is dead to Trump. No more trade! Who are they to oppose the use of bases due to them wanting to adhere to international law? Who? And what is that excuse of international law BS? Off with their head!

That is just absolutely immoral. If they believe we should go to war then they have a right to their opinion but if it’s all about political point scoring then more shame on the Daily Mail.

BendoftheBeginning · 04/03/2026 06:56

I have just seen the most incredible exchange on Linked In. There’s an American citizen in Dubai who’s been trying to contact the US Embassy there to find out if there will be repatriation flights and he can’t get to a working number. It’s like their consular services have just stopped, just as they’ve kicked off a war in the region.

Another American has - under his actual name - told the first one to stop being so entitled “expecting government hand outs.” FOR EXPECTING CONSULAR SERVICES TO WORK IN A FRIENDLY COUNTRY CURRENTLY BEING ATTACKED IN A WAR HIS COUNTRY HAS STARTED.

American civilisation is in serious trouble. They can’t even be arsed to look after their own if it might make Trump look bad.

ExtraOnions · 04/03/2026 07:05

The Right-Wingers love a war, all that jingoistic flag waving and “Rule Britannia” gives them such a thrill.

I’ve not met one person who thinks we shouod get involved, and comments on SM posts are overwhelming supporting staying out. The Daily Mail is well off the mark with this one.

notabingthing · 04/03/2026 07:12

IMO it isn’t our war. And why the fuck should we say how high when trump says jump?! Not so long ago he was slagging off our service men and women who died in Afghanistan! Fuck trump.

Yes I do believe Iran is a threat and the regime needs to change, so fine if the us wants to do that, but it doesn’t mean we have to get involved.

My assumption would be that this is due to lack of planning.

Trump is already unpopular domestically and his obvious personality traits will be making him desperate about that, and even more unpredictable than usual. I’m not sure how they will bring themselves to allow the elections this year knowing they will likely be trounced. If the elections go ahead in November without any interference it will be reassuring but if not then the US is definitely fucked.

I think you’re likely right, and I’d add that the DOGE cuts probably took out a whole group of people who knew how emergency protocols work and just made things happen when they needed to without waiting for a direct presidential directive.

But the really shocking thing is seeing the cult of Trump on action. I’ve seen them go from hating illegal immigrants, to hating immigrants, to hating Americans protesting ICE, to hating Americans wanting consular services if it makes Trump look bad. There seems to be a bunch of Trump followers who could easily be swayed into civil war, let alone overseas ones.

Codyrhodesisaheel · 04/03/2026 07:37

Honestly I don’t think the US will ever recover reputationally on an international standing. When you think everyone still had side eyes at Russia over the Cold War and that was 60 years ago…

but no we should not be getting involved in this war whatsoever. And thank fuck Starmer is in charge. He’s been great on the international stage, calming things down repeatedly, coming up with the “coalition of the willing”, making sure the UK had the least tariffs in the world but also placating Trump while being critical.

in the last year alone, the US has said outright

Who cares about a little country who “hasn’t fought a war in 40-50 years)

“British troops stayed away from the frontline”

and he’s repeatedly tried to bully anyone who says no - can he even stop trade in Spain???

he’s done this to a) distract from the Epstein files and b) so he can declare martial law and stop the mid terms in November

Oh that cohort definitely exists. There's even non-American versions of them. Absolutely bizarre.

JHound · 04/03/2026 09:37

They have such a childlike approach to the world. Why should we join America’s war? Especially against a country like Iran which does not match the USA’s military capability. Especially not when Israel has joined them in the fight.

Are those news editors volunteering themselves? Their sons and daughters?

War isn’t a party. It means devastation of infrastructure and appalling loss of human life. It should only be entered into when absolutely necessary.

I've just seen this in the wild as well

I follow People Magazine on FB and they've posted about a travel blogger trapped in Kuwait saying that the US government are refusing to help any one evacuate. All of the comments below, are literally saying (and I quote this verbatim) "tensions have been going on for years so why was she there? why should our government help people who have put themselves in danger?"

Fucking hell.
