To have ran upstairs in case I smelt of burger

Whydoesitalwaysrainonmeeeee · 10/02/2026 20:10

Just now

Treated myself to a Big tasty meal on the way home from work. Happily driving along in the dark and rain, listening to 90’s tunes 🤣
Dropped the bag evidence in the big bin round the corner from my house, getting soaked in the process, but all worth it.
Had to do the quick check of the car and car seat for any random bits-there was shredded lettuce-got rid.
Came in the house, coat off and Ddog smelling my hands, so I ran upstairs saying to Dh and Dd that I was tired 😂

In bed feeling satisfied, but wondering if I smell of burger

Not actually true though- plenty of berating the other way on this thread!

Nobody has berated anyone for not ever having an unhealthy snack in secret. We've just laughed at them for pretending that the concept is beyond their wit (unless perhaps it really is? If that's the case then maybe we shouldn't make fun...) and that it means people who do it are morally dubious or severely unfulfilled or whatever other failing they've imagined. And yeah, the same old recycled language used over and over for years (baffled, bemused, odd) could make you die of boredom before a Macca's gets anywhere near your arteries.

I honestly don’t get it but I have not criticised anyone that does it. It seems that in most cases one side cannot see the others POV (which is fine) and then assumes their POV is the only acceptable one

You are so invested in this…
It’s not even your thread and you’ve basically hijacked it to type “baffled, bemused, odd” on a loop.
You could die of boredom indeed.

Is this all you've got now? "Ur on the thread I'm on lol"?

It's actually an improvement. Well done.

Indeed. I really don't get why it's exciting or funny or anything eating a McDonald's in secret. I don't think there's anything wrong with it either if it floats your boat but no I still don't get why it does float anyone's boat.

Ask @ThatCyanCat to explain it to you. She’ll love it 😁

I have found my people. One of my favourite secret treats are pain au chocolat from Lidl. 2 of
them. But those crumbly bastards are hard to hide if you are a messy eater like me. The car needs a good crumb sweep too. Worth it though.

ThatCyanCat · 11/02/2026 16:23

I explained it on page 2. Then again for the people at the back. I even did it in verse. Pay attention. You might learn something.

If it's not your thing, fair enough. But bring on the performative drivel about how it's beyond your comprehension and people who do it are lacking while using every MN cliche in the book and I'll laugh and take odds. That's fun too.

It isn't performative just to say I don't get it. It's performative to continually roll your eyes at people who are quite politely saying they don't get it.

But you love repeating it. Can’t get enough of it. I’m just indulging you, really.
Enjoy yourself 😘

Well if you're being polite and not performative and you really, truly just don't understand why people might enjoy a sneaky, slightly naughty but harmless secret, then I'm not talking about you. If you really do want to understand, you can try this.

However, if you truly do not understand the concept in any context then you may just have to accept that some people like a thing that isn't your thing. I don't really get going onto threads about things I don't do and am not interested in to tell people I don't get it after several pages of explanation, but some people do it.

Sorry but this is ridiculous.

Really amateurish @Whydoesitalwaysrainonmeeeee

You need a good strong throat sweet and a nice handcream. Hides all traces. 🫡

Is this the adult equivalent of eating half a pack of polos and spraying yourself with impulse till you choke as a teenager in the hope of rendering your mum incapable of detecting the crafty fag you had with your mates?

Edited to say, not me obviously. Ahem. 😆

Whydoesitalwaysrainonmeeeee · 10/02/2026 21:25

Big mac is usually my preferred option and Dh gets Big tasty, larger burger, tastes more sort of Bbq’d, big tomato slice…god, it was good

Niice! Ok going to swap out a Big Mac for a Big Tasty next time, when it’s back on the menu here in UK. The extra bbq-y flavour does sound tempting!

AleaEim · 11/02/2026 16:54

ZenNudist · 10/02/2026 20:22

I'm really confused why getting a burger is a secret?

Yeah I’m really confused, why is it a big deal? Me and dh eat burgers with or without each other present and we just tell each other so the other knows if dinner will be needed. Don’t get why this is secretive.

I think this is where the difference is- those who don’t eat food in secret don’t think a burger is ‘slightly naughty’ because it’s just food. It’s suggests that someone might be cross that you picked up something to eat.

No I don’t understand it either, I’ve never ever felt the need to hide what I eat. It’s never even occurred to me.

however I note no one is hiding eating carrot sticks or an apple. It seems to be mainly unhealthy food. The naughty in your words. Other than one poster who oddly eats rice twice a year on secret.

Which makes me wonder if there is a weight issue behind this for some of the posters. That they should not be eating it in their minds, they don’t want to be judged about it, or seen as greedy , so eat in secret and hide the evidence.

user1471554720 · 11/02/2026 17:18

DappledThings

A lot of the people may have partners who might judge them for eating unhealthy food from time to time. It is easier to eat in secret rather than answer questions about having a second burger this month.

I eat a slice of cake or a cream bun in secret from time to time. If I buy a slice ior a bun n front of the dcs, I have to buy a slice for everyone and it costs a fortune.

Also having to deal with comments when I am eating a slice of cake at home, e.g. ooh you are being good to yourself etc, ruins the enjoyment and I feel so guilty that I won"t eat it.

I buy a cake for the family for birthdays a few times a year but I don't get first choice on the flavour, so it is not really a treat.

SmoothOperatorCarlosSainz · 11/02/2026 17:25

YANBU HOWEVER how are you getting away with it? My car would stink for two days of maccers even with no evidence in the car 😹

Deboragh · 11/02/2026 18:01

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 10/02/2026 20:34

But why would you hide what you’ve eaten? I really don’t understand either.

Is this secret eating thing something lots of people do? Why?

There's some humourless people on here.

They obviously do because they're so absolutely performative about how much they don't understand it and how odd and baffling it is, and it really isn't. Or telling people it means their lives are empty and all the rest of it.

At any rate, they're spending an awful lot of time on a thread dedicated to something they don't do and have no interest in and don't get. That's far more inexplicable.

Well I'm just as baffled by how interesting you find it that people are baffled. There's some meta-bafflement for your delectation and to keep you on the thread too as it's clearly giving you such enjoyment!

Sorry to be unclear: I don't find it interesting at all. I find it overdone, trite, insincere and the biggest MN cliche to declare oneself baffled, bemused, bizarre, odd, all that, about totally mundane and simple stuff, which is why I take the piss. Doing that entertains me but it doesn't mean I think what's being said is interesting.

If you lot could just ring the changes a bit and consult a thesaurus it would be much better.

OK, well happy to have afforded you the opportunity to take the piss more.

I will just say again that I entirely agree it is mundane, simple and everyday stuff to eat a burger. Which is exactly what makes the secrecy about it so, what shall we say, puzzling?

It has been explained so many times and I'm sorry but while I believe you might not go for it yourself, I absolutely do not believe your claim that it is beyond your wit why some people do.

If it truly is, though, then it's pointless trying to explain yet again, or you trying to grasp it. I guess you will just have to do what floats your boat, which appears to be parking on threads to about things that you do not understand and in which you have no interest.
