To have ran upstairs in case I smelt of burger

Whydoesitalwaysrainonmeeeee · 10/02/2026 20:10

Just now

Treated myself to a Big tasty meal on the way home from work. Happily driving along in the dark and rain, listening to 90’s tunes 🤣
Dropped the bag evidence in the big bin round the corner from my house, getting soaked in the process, but all worth it.
Had to do the quick check of the car and car seat for any random bits-there was shredded lettuce-got rid.
Came in the house, coat off and Ddog smelling my hands, so I ran upstairs saying to Dh and Dd that I was tired 😂

In bed feeling satisfied, but wondering if I smell of burger

Ffs, it would hardly break the bank to buy whatever disgusting cheap fast food you think is a treat for you + 2. The secrecy and avoidance makes this pretty dark and not at all light hearted. Light hearted would have had an ending where OP breezed in and had food for the rest of the family and then had a meal together with them. This deprivation mindset that you must hoard treats for yourself and secrecy means you get an extra treat over on others is not at all normal or to be celebrated.

Omg you are overthinking this!! Have you never savoured somthing on your own? Even a coffee, or a cold beer?

Never in secret, never lied & covered up, and never not shared the experience of a treat with my immediate family.

This was much more than enjoying a cup of coffee solo. Which I’d never do without offering a coffee either.

The reason I don't buy my son McDonald's as often as he'd like is because it's unhealthy, not because of the cost. And my example is not of an extra treat for me but of me treating myself at a different time.

But also secretly. It’s all hush hush.🤐

That is one of the issues. The secrecy. The lying.

Great work OP. Text book.

These are the moments that make life worth living.

😂😂😂

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 11/02/2026 01:32

So which friends character did you collect?

I didn’t have dinner, made it earlier for them..pesto pasta, the thought of coming back to that was not appealing..so I did a quick detour 😁

Aha, give the family a trough full of dry pesto pasta and sneak out for a burger. Crikey, yeah, you do well to cover that one up

TippyTee · 11/02/2026 01:53

All my life as a a kid I would want to eat all types of fast and junk food and would dream about buying it all as an adult whenever I wanted.

Now I can buy it anytime but have to watch my health and am in heart attack years. I’m not able to casually grab a burger on the way home for dinner, whether it was to eat alone or with the family. It sounds lovely though, OP.

If you were able to run up the stairs then you clearly didn't eat enough burgers. I don't have McDonald's often but when I do I need a set of wheels afterwards.

She was actually able to ran up the stairs.

I had chips, no drink though, which I regretted afterwards…wasn’t sure what I was thinking

Rookie error - keep a bottle of water in the car

I don’t get it either. I’m guessing there must be 2 sorts of people some that get this and some that don’t. Probably a thrill seeking thing. Some people are also very emotional about food and some are not. I have a work colleague that seem to talk about food every day, I barely think about food unless I am very hungry. Neither way is bad, just different. What’s most odd is that neither side can understand the other sides perspective.

It's not having to think about anyone or deal with the whining of why didn't you get me some, can I eat your chips.

Mothers get very little time when they can do something just for them and not have to consider everyone else's wants and desires. A cheeky burger all to yourself can be that moment just to themselves.

A Costa coffee drunk in my car in the car park when I've done all the food shopping for the family is it a itreat. It's peaceful just sitting there listening to music for a few minutes sipping on it. So yes it's a treat.

WhatTheHellsGoingOn · 11/02/2026 04:08

Why is anyone ‘scared’ / bothered about their family finding out they’ve eaten a fucking burger?

If their family found out they've eaten a fucking burger - without at least waiting for it to finish fucking - they might conclude that this is some kind of weird kink.

Seriously though, I live alone, but sometimes do enjoy a sneaky, "secret" supper. Usually just a little plate of cheeses, olives, fancy crackers etc., but I have been known to walk in on myself tucking into a whole roast chicken in the kitchen at 3am.

Why do I keep these treats secret from myself? Well, it saves some degree of guilt and admonition, but mostly it just makes it seem more fun.

Hit the nail on the head.

Various reasons…the main ones being…I didn’t want to have to get some for everyone else, spend loads more for everyone else, wait to get home to eat mine with everyone else. I wanted it just for me, to eat alone, to enjoy alone..because I could..

Who is everyone else, your husband and children?

Fimofriend · 11/02/2026 06:44

ImPamDoove · 10/02/2026 20:20

Why did you have to hide the evidence? I don’t get it.

Either the family would feel cheated because they didn't get anything or they have opinions, loud opinions, about her diet. Or maybe about anything she does.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 11/02/2026 06:48

I’m not saying you lot of secret eaters have eating disorders, but you definitely think like someone with an eating disorder.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 11/02/2026 07:04

blueshoes · 10/02/2026 23:31

It is not normal. It is a disordered relationship with food. So sad that people cannot see it and think it is normalised to be hiding the fact they are eating.

Rubbish! I think, for a lot of people, it demonstrates a healthy relationship with food. My diet is clean and I exercise every day. Once in a while I will go through the ritual of devouring a creme egg, stuffing the foil wrapper behind a sofa cushion. It it one of life's great pleasures for me.

TorroFerney · 11/02/2026 07:07

Terip · 10/02/2026 20:28

Why are people asking why hide the evidence? Because there’s nothing better than a covert burger or other guilty pleasure.

I sometimes have pork scratchings. A whole bag to myself. Stinky, salty, delicious. I eat them alone and then bury the bag deep in the bin, never to be found.

Then I resume my life as a respectable middle class person.

I think because it seems shame based and that’s not good for mental wellbeing. It probably makes some of us, who’ve lived in a situation where being shamed was the norm, feel a bit uncomfortable. It’s also a bit I’m a woman so I have to hide treating myself in case someone calls me greedy or comments on what I’m eating which I am sure a lot of us have had men do.

as you were though, appreciate it’s a lighthearted thread !

It’s not the cream egg that’s the problem though, it’s why on earth wouldn’t you want anyone to know you had it?

What are you avoiding? Judgment? Ridicule? Jealousy? Why can’t family see that you ate one item of chocolate?

idontgetitdoyou · 11/02/2026 07:34

I do this with pork pies 😂

Why would either of you have to keep it a secret you ate a pork pie or sausage roll on the way home.

the only reasons I can think of are seriously controlling partner or some shame over food choices or feeling greedy,

I’ve been all sorts of weights, and never once thought I have to lie and hide evidence of what i consumed.

For the excitement of feeling like a secret agent.

Unwrap the tiny instruction: Eat a pork pie on the way home. Destroy this message immediately.

...and then carrying out the mission.

You feel like a secret agent as you eat a pork pie in the car and lie about it?
