Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

In words of one syllable, @MeSeM - was your van pet friendly. Not just the site as a whole.

Because the OP is planning on taking her dog to a site where dogs are welcomed, but the van she has booked does not allow dogs inside. She wants to take it anyway. Despite risks to other people who think they are booking a van which has not had dogs in it.

Edited

Yes our chosen site was pet friendly, I've mentioned before a few times & made a typing error in one of my comments, due to quickly responding to someone else's high & mighty judgements
Yes is the correct answer, our selected site was pet friendly hence why it was so welcoming to both of our precious pets 💚

MandingoAteMyBaby · 06/02/2026 17:16

Clip it to a tent peg outside the caravan, no need to take it inside.

Yes of course you can't possibly know one way or another if your Children will be allergic or not - Only time will tell - I was agreeing with not liking flippancy, not judging whether the person actually was flippant! I'm not Miss Psychic but you're most surely Miss Judgement!

Sounded more like you thought my son had brought a dog without research or thought only an idiot would do that.

Yeah because dog allergies are unheard of? You are either the thickest person on earth or a self entitled twat. Neither is a good look. God help your kids with you as a role model. People can only hope karma gets you and even if it does you won't admit to it.
You could at least admit you are a self centred piece of crap though...

Yes thick, entitled and selfish just about sums up the OP

As explained in another post, that was a typo, haven't you ever made typing mistakes!? Before you jump to judgements try to read between the lines... I've written other posts stating the caravan site we selected welcomed our 2 pets with open arms
If you're going to make vicious judgements is it any wonder some commenters are going to make mistakes with their typing!

If it is "vicious" to point out to you that it's unreasonable to blame people for assuming you wrote what you intended to rather than intending to write the direct opposite of what you wrote, your little outburst against me is entirely justified.

Why should I, or anyone, be expected to read what you didn't actually write, and then be excoriated by you in repeated rather unpleasant posts for having failed to read your mind instead of your post?

If you bother to read the post that you quoted, I did in fact make the point in it that you had corrected your typo: "You later corrected this to "It was very pet friendly I meant to type", but you were the one who got it wrong in the first place."

Which by your own admission, you were. If you hadn't got it wrong, you wouldn't have needed to correct it.

Grumpypumpy · 06/02/2026 18:40

Don’t do this. I’m so allergic to dogs and you might be able to clean up after it but any fur will stay in the hoover and it’s just awful.

Casperroonie · 06/02/2026 19:28

YeOldeGreyhound · 02/02/2026 21:06

Sorry, but that is cruel. Keep the dog in the boot? Madness.

In a cage. Read properly. Read properly: IN A CAGE IN THE BOOT.

A normal cage trained dog would be fine. I have a large boot and dog CAGE built in. My dog loves it.

Avie29 · 06/02/2026 20:47

No don’t take your dog, cancel and rebook, not only could someone be allergic to dogs (hence why there are dog free caravans) but i purposely book no dog parks due to my son being very scared of them, i would be absolutely pissed if someone snuck their dog into the park and ruined my sons holiday, selfish and irresponsible OP.

Still no air or much room to move!! Even less so. And cold.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/02/2026 11:54

Doesn't that depend on the car/boot? In the Skoda Octavia estate we have, the boot is larger than the seating, if the back is down, and even with the back seats in use the boot is as much space as is allowed for three human passengers, just without the well for legs (which a dog wouldn't need anyway).

Spidey66 · 07/02/2026 12:18

I think they allocate certain caravans for dogs because of allergies, also theyre easier to clean (hard flooring/leather or vinyl sofa.)

I'm a dog owner and usually bring my dog on holiday but on this occasion I'd have to change my plans.

Givemeausernamepls · 07/02/2026 14:10

I use to take my JRT caravanning with me. I defo had to pay more to take him, I’m assuming because they might have to clean more thoroughly.

I wouldn’t have taken him to a non dog van in case people come afterwards who are allergic.

sundaysurfing · 07/02/2026 17:30

If it’s a toy, I would bring it. They are tiny! Just keep well hidden :-)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/02/2026 18:55

And if anyone using the caravan after you has a bad reaction to its dander, well, you won't have to see them choke and gasp because you'll have bogged off home again before they arrive.

Great advice!

Zatapec · 07/02/2026 19:55

Whereabouts are you? I'll look after him 😉

Tableforjoan · 07/02/2026 19:56

We can just all hope that shitty dogs owners dogs shit in their shoes 🤣

Itsjustmethatsall · 07/02/2026 23:16

Entitled, or what? If you've booked a pet free caravan, you've booked a PET FREE CARAVAN. What part of that, plus all the other remarks telling you not to, do you not understand? Besides which, as a dog owner, why weren't you taking your supposedly beloved dog in the first place? I'm a dog owner, and I'd never dream of going on holiday without her. She enjoys it just as much as we do. You're not even leaving the country for crying out loud. YES, you ARE being unreasonable to think the rules don't apply to you, no matter what the circumstances

KitKleverKat · 08/02/2026 06:35

Either put little doggie in kennels, or offer to pay extra. If this is turned down, and let's face it you tried, rather than upset the children and ruin your trip, get a little dog buggie pram and pull the hood up enabling entry and exit of the caravan looking as if you have a baby. Let doggie out away from your caravan area. Make sure little doggie is well towelled down and feet cleaned and brushed and it will be ok. Take some wet wipes and Febreeze too. There, all sorted. And do not spend the whole trip worrying. It is a dog site and you asked for dog caravan after your dilemma at home and they had none and turned down a cleaning fee. We had to do exactly this but it wasn't with a dog but with our two darling little ferrets. They were caged in the caravan and then popped into their pram and wheeled straight off to the beach or put in the car and off for outings 😊😊

Too many over reactions going on, and harsh upsetting remarks. Toy dogs are not a rambuctious young Dalmatian or heavy large Labrador. Some of the posts will probably have brought tears so you can all be pleased with yourselves for calling little doggie owner names!

Jeez 😱😯

Dangerous? Really... Yes we always hear of people that die due to being near a dog. 🙄Dont be so dramatic.

If that was the case, dogs wouldn't be welcome practically everywhere. I can take my dog into the Lego store and Pandora in my city centre.

It can trigger asthma attacks. Asthma can be fatal. We make sure we stay in dog free accommodation for this reason.

Of course we accept that we can’t control whether the people before us were with service dogs, or just selfish pricks that ignore the rules.

Go ahead and just do what you want. Hope I don’t know you in real life.

KitKleverKat · 08/02/2026 06:58

OMG 😲 - bit harsh .....

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:36

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

There’s a first time for everything.

But there’s a perfect solution here - don’t go. Let dad take the kids, or he stays with dog and you go. Or no one goes and you chalk it up as one of those things.

Just because you want to take your dog and don’t want to use kennels, doesn’t mean the answer is you do whatever you want. YABU.

That caravan is someone’s property - you can’t just let a dog stay because it suits you, fur or no fur.

What The Hell Wtf GIF

Goodness me - all the life sucking begrudgers just may have ruined their holiday altogether by now! Anyone would think they are trying to stash a criminal runaway.
