Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

I don’t understand why you hadn’t planned to take the dog wth you in the first place.
All the dog owners I know book pet friendly accommodation and always take their dogs with them on uk holidays

Now imagine if I sneak her in and dont get caught at all, no drama, no problems, we all just carry on with our lives and I leave after having a nice time for me kids...

Yes, and then the next person in after you is a severe asthmatic with a particular allergy to dog dander and they suffer a severe asthmatic attack and die? Yes, people can, and do, die from asthma attacks! My partner is asthmatic and can't cope with dog dander, and regularly has these problems when visiting some places that are supposed to be "dog free". She's been hospitalised three times just since I've known her, the last time was extremely serious. You're being self-centred and irresponsible and I really hope you get your come uppance!

HiEarthlings · 08/02/2026 07:23

oceanmountain · 03/02/2026 08:45

Dangerous? Really... Yes we always hear of people that die due to being near a dog. 🙄Dont be so dramatic.

If that was the case, dogs wouldn't be welcome practically everywhere. I can take my dog into the Lego store and Pandora in my city centre.

Yes, dangerous! Asthmatics CAN and DO die from severe asthmatic attacks! And dog dander, which is almost impossible to completely eradicate, hence the need for specific dog-friendly caravans and hotel rooms, is one of the most common irritants!

HiEarthlings · 08/02/2026 07:29

What a thoroughly nasty person OP is! People like this is why the world is going to s#*t! "I'm alright Jack, and I'll do what I want, when I want, and I don't give a damn about anyone else. I'm the only one that matters and rules don't apply to me!". I despise people these days.....

tigger1001 · 08/02/2026 07:37

So selfish and entitled! It's not a dog friendly van therefore taking the dog is simple not something a responsible dog owner would do. It's only something a completely self absorbed person would do who thinks rules don't apply to them.

you say you don't want to disappoint the kids but are happy to risk being thrown off site? Think that would cause far more disappointment.

there was a thread the other week about how hard it is to find non pet friendly holiday accommodation and overwhelmingly posters told the op that they needed to suck it up and ensure they book somewhere specifically not allowing pets in the accommodation. This thread shows why that doesn't work.

im allergic to dogs. And would request pet free accommodation and would expect that to be the case.

selfish cf.

Tinatubby73 · 08/02/2026 07:46

All dogs shred hair even the ones that appear not toy daughter has a severe dog allergy and she would probably end up ill in hospital if she'd gone in a caravan by an after you!!don't be so selfish.slso we do a lot of camping on sites, and no dogs means no dogs!!(And we've got 3)

DressDilemma · 08/02/2026 08:50

I’m actually quite horrified reading this.

For some of us, pet-free accommodation isn’t a preference, it’s a health requirement. My child has a severe pet hair allergy that causes asthma attacks and hives. We deliberately book pet-free places and often pay more because there are already so few options left.

If someone sneaks a dog in, it doesn’t just break a rule, it can make the place unsafe for the next family staying there. We book in good faith assuming the property has been kept pet-free. One person ignoring that could genuinely ruin a holiday or even lead to a medical situation.

There is a real reason certain properties are kept pet-free. Please think about other families, not just your own convenience.

DressDilemma · 08/02/2026 08:54

KitKleverKat · 08/02/2026 07:05

Goodness me - all the life sucking begrudgers just may have ruined their holiday altogether by now! Anyone would think they are trying to stash a criminal runaway.

Bringing a dog into a pet-free property isn’t cheeky. It’s irresponsible when it can affect someone else’s child’s health.

TwinklyWrinkly · 08/02/2026 08:55

sundaysurfing · 07/02/2026 17:30

If it’s a toy, I would bring it. They are tiny! Just keep well hidden :-)

It doesn't matter how small they are, they still shed dander and can still cause an allergic reaction.

KitKleverKat · 08/02/2026 06:35

Either put little doggie in kennels, or offer to pay extra. If this is turned down, and let's face it you tried, rather than upset the children and ruin your trip, get a little dog buggie pram and pull the hood up enabling entry and exit of the caravan looking as if you have a baby. Let doggie out away from your caravan area. Make sure little doggie is well towelled down and feet cleaned and brushed and it will be ok. Take some wet wipes and Febreeze too. There, all sorted. And do not spend the whole trip worrying. It is a dog site and you asked for dog caravan after your dilemma at home and they had none and turned down a cleaning fee. We had to do exactly this but it wasn't with a dog but with our two darling little ferrets. They were caged in the caravan and then popped into their pram and wheeled straight off to the beach or put in the car and off for outings 😊😊

Are you for real? You do know that ferrets can cause allergic reactions too as they also have dander? If this is genuine and you really did smuggle your animals into a pet-free caravan and this is actually YOU in the photo, congratulations, you have just shown anyone that might recognise you what a selfish person you are who cares nothing for other people's discomfort and possible severe allergic reactions as long as YOU get what YOU want.

It is irrelevant that they were in a cage whilst in the caravan, animals shed dander and it won't have been contained to the cage. Totally irreseponsible, selfish and possibly life-threatening.

But the pet hair will be on you from cuddling, then transferred to the sofa, bed etc.

KitKleverKat · 08/02/2026 06:46

Too many over reactions going on, and harsh upsetting remarks. Toy dogs are not a rambuctious young Dalmatian or heavy large Labrador. Some of the posts will probably have brought tears so you can all be pleased with yourselves for calling little doggie owner names!

I mean allergies aside the worst behaved dogs

I’ve met have all been small dogs. Which the type of owner who go she’s just playing when it’s pulling at your trouser legs. Dog off lead shitting everywhere while the owner looks the other way.

Met a chi owner who actually said as her dog pooped in her livingroom that chihuahuas are so hard to house train 🤨.

So I tend to think people think small dogs need less training as they are less dangerous but it just leads to asshole dogs with ass hole owners.

If a gsd or a lab came upto you and started dragging your trouser leg it wouldn’t be funny. But little dogs get laughed at. If a doberman took a shit on the livingroom floor I doubt the owner would laugh it off as just hard to train.

Does seem to be small dogs owners again who would sneak their pets in. Another ✅ in the dick head box.

I had same dilemma 2 years ago but text caravan owner and explained i would cancel and get a dog friendly van but as my dog is also small and doesn't cast she allowed me to take him

This is a wind up isn't it? Its got to be....

I'm assuming op was just a bit bored and fancied a bit of a mumsnet argument...
Either that, or just an entitled selfish twat.

Its not just about the cleaning its impossible to remove all allergens from animals with a quick hoover. Your smelly ferrets included. Another entitled arse.
Book the right holiday in the first place.

Wet wipes and Febreeze wont get rid of allergens.

OMG 😲 - bit harsh .....

Accurate though. And reality is often harsh.

TheGoddessAthena · 08/02/2026 16:35

taking your fecking ferrets on holiday, ffs.

Crunchymum · 08/02/2026 16:46

Darling little ferrets 😂

Is everyone on this thread on the wind up?

Tableforjoan · 08/02/2026 17:12

There used to be a guy who took his pet snake around fantasy island on his shoulders, a different one would walk around with his parrot not staff. Just caravan owners 😅 but at least they owned their vans.

Seen a couple of bearded dragons in those dog prams. Cant say I miss my days of owning a static there 😅😅

It cannot be real - no one in their right mind would buy a pram for ferrets and take them on holiday. What on earth is the point?

They genuinely would. Go around the fantasy island market Skegness/ingoldmells. The amount of pets that are not just dogs in pushchairs huge.

There are small animal “hotels” seemingly all over. My brother takes his rabbits to one.

Otherwise, it’s a ferret, surely you just bung a teenager £50 to come in and feed it for a week?
