Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

Come on now, @Billybea , don't be lazy! If you want to get a buzz out of being rude on Mumsnet, at least make an effort and start your own thread. That's what all the cool girls do, or at least the ones with brains. Oh, I see the problem.

Yawn.

Yes we brought our Chow Chow dog & cat to our caravan holiday park holiday one summer 💚🐕🐈
I don't see what harm it would cause especially remembering your delightful dog doesn't even molt 🤗
Wishing You&Yours all the utmost very best

Did you take them to a caravan that is pet free?
If not that's unbelievably selfish.😡
I'm highly allergic to cats, I don't even have to be in the same room as them.
I've had a severe reaction with breathing difficulties after visiting someone who I didn't even know had a cat, and who didn't know I was allergic either.
Had no idea what was triggering my itchy eyes and wheezing until someone in the group came in stroking a cat as to which my breathing got really bad.
If I'd have been in that caravan after you it could have been even more serious as I'd have no idea that there was a cat involved and so wouldn't be removing myself from the area as why would I think to when it's a pet free van I'd booked?!
The selfishness and /or what must be pure and utter ignorance in some never fails to amaze
😡

Oh and just to make you aware, a dog or cat doesn't have to moult for someone to have an allergic reaction, they can react to the dander (skin flakes)

jannier · 05/02/2026 07:29

Most caravans on sites like these are owned by individual hard working people who rent them out to cover some of the costs ...some not all and not making any profit.
Typically they also find their property damaged by the people who rent the caravans. Your not hurting the company by taking a dog your hurting an individual person. Your dog just like every dog drops some fur, dropsskin cells.....and smells, (you wont smell it your used to it) its paws are dirty ....why should you have the right to inflict this on someone else? Allergic reactions are not just to visibly shedded hair.
You dont want the expense of a kennel you shouldn't have had a dog. Your irrisponsible and self centred.

Everything molts and sheds - skin cells have a cycle

humans for example lose a million a day

over a month most skin cells are replaced that is an awful lot of shedding to be done and it is that which can also cause the issues

if you have an allocated dog friendly caravan it isn’t an issue - indeed I imagine there will be quite a few dogs there when the OP is going

in the right accommodation

Can’t decide if this is a not very clever ‘joke’ or serious. 🤔

MibsXX · 05/02/2026 10:34

I just wanted to add, dogs often rub their bottoms on carpets etc, ( where small children often crawl and play) and even if thats not the case, they mostly all lick their nether regions , who fancies curling up on a sofa or bed and snuggling your face into a cushion or pillow that a previous occupants pet might have, erm, darked on? :-)

I assumed that an AI bot (or Stephen Fry) had signed up to MN.

NewLifter · 05/02/2026 11:58

OP, we found ourselves in this exact situation a few years ago. We contacted the caravan owner and they kindly agreed to us bringing our dogs so long as we paid an extra fee for a deep clean. We also deep cleaned before we left (the owners contacted me to thank us as we left it spotless)

Had they declined us, we would have cancelled.

Edited

Unfortunately some dog owners have low standards even sharing a plate and face licks as well as the bed. I love dogs but they are dogs not babies some owners a disgusting. Usually the smaller the dog the worse hygiene Ive seen them sat on the table eating from a plate.

It was not pet friendly, they welcomed our Beloved pets with open arms & especially adored our Chow, how in God's name is this in any way selfish!?

Yes of course to a certain degree everything molts most surely
We were blessed to find a pet friendly site which welcomes ours with open arms, we couldn't have gone otherwise 💚

It was very pet friendly I meant to type & our pets weren't just accepted they were most immensely welcome

Get your facts right, we did nothing wrong bringing our pets to a site which welcomes them

Just because a site is pet friendly doesn’t mean all the accommodation is. Did you book a pet friendly accommodation?

MeSeM · 05/02/2026 14:06

jannier · 05/02/2026 07:30

Nasty and selfish

How in God's name is it nasty or selfish when the holiday site we chose welcomes pets? How is this is anyway wrong, they permit pets there & love them visiting, there's nothing whatsoever wrong with this it's their choice & more to the point we would not have gone on holiday without our pets That is what would have been nasty & selfish knowing them as we do & comments like yours are what are nasty & selfish! Full of judgement over circumstances you know absolutely nothing about!

TheGoddessAthena · 05/02/2026 14:19

In words of one syllable, @MeSeM - was your van pet friendly. Not just the site as a whole.

Because the OP is planning on taking her dog to a site where dogs are welcomed, but the van she has booked does not allow dogs inside. She wants to take it anyway. Despite risks to other people who think they are booking a van which has not had dogs in it.

Was your accommodation pet friendly too?
If so you did nothing wrong

Fliesinmyeyes · 05/02/2026 14:38

Why on earth did you ask for opinions only to spit back at everyone. I doubt if there is one comment from anyone who thinks it's okay to sneak the dog in. You asked for advice - you have been given dozens of reasons why you should not do it, but it seems like you have made up your mind even before you posted here. So okay I'm going to give you what you want...
Here we go.
OP, ignore all these hundreds of sad naysayers.. I absolutely think you should take your lovely dog. Why should you miss out just cos your plans got fucked up. Who gives a shit about the rules or the ridiculous reasons why you shouldn't break them. That's what rules are for.. to be broken, - that's the old saying isn't it? There , happy now. It's all good - you take your dog, and don't worry about a thing, or anybody else. Have a great holiday OP and don't lose a second's sleep over it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/02/2026 14:41

@Fliesinmyeyes - sadly there are several posters who have encouraged the OP in her selfish, entitled behaviour.

Since you told us the opposite, that the site did NOT welcome pets, with the words "It was not pet friendly, they welcomed our Beloved pets with open arms & especially adored our Chow", the person not getting facts straight would seem to have been you. You later corrected this to "It was very pet friendly I meant to type", but you were the one who got it wrong in the first place.

Blaming people and telling them they should get their facts right because they read and responded to what you actually wrote is somewhat less than reasonable.

Actually, what your having taken pets to a pet-friendly site has to do with OP taking a pet to a caravan which specifically does NOT welcome pets is a bit of a puzzle.

MeSeM · 05/02/2026 13:54

I wouldn't joke about it but maybe you've missed the fundamental issue here.

OP has booked a No Pet caravan and intends taking her dog.

Whether your dog was welcomed at a pet friendly place is neither here nor there. Would you take your dog to a No Pet accommodation?
