Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

It's not just the hair it's the minute skin cells that shed everywhere that people are allergic to. It's not just a question of vacuuming up any errant hairs.

So how will you take it out with you without it being spotted? 🙄

well my car would be right next to the caravan?... Id just walk it out and put it in.... Iv never seen a member of staff near my van before....🤔

If you haven't book a dog suitable caravan, then no you can't just add a dog and hope no one notices.

They have allocated those caravans dog suitable for a reason. There may be an extra charge that they levy to manage extra cleaning.

You could try ringing them and seeing if it ispossible to designate your caravan 'dog friendly' for an extra payment or to ask if they can call you with any cancellations of dog suitable caravans.

Would you get your money back if you cancelled now?

No, they wont give a refund. I already called and asked.

If it’s Haven, the cleaners only spend 15 minutes per van.

purpleygrey · 02/02/2026 15:28

such a selfish thing to be thinking of doing.

pay for dog boarding like everyone else does if you have no one to look after it

Screamingabdabz · 02/02/2026 15:28

My DH is allergic and can react even if he’s standing near to a pet owner in a supermarket queue. The fact that your dog doesn’t ‘shed’ (and they still do btw) is neither her nor there.

You are massively inconsiderate and this might ruin someone’s entire holiday or longed for break. I look specifically for dog-free accommodation and I expect that to be honoured. People can tell. Only dicks think rules don’t apply to them - don’t be one.

You cannot guarantee there will be no hair left behind. It's horribly unfair on the next people staying if any of them are allergic.

Why did you ask on here if you're clearly going to do it anyway?

Hopefully someone spots you and you get kicked off the site/banned.

It’s not just fur, it’s dander and saliva. Don’t do it, it is very selfish of you. If you do I hope you get caught and thrown off the site.

EleanorReally · 02/02/2026 15:32

ask to change sites?
defer your trip?

WallaceinAnderland · 02/02/2026 15:34

You know it would be selfish but you don't care about that so that's not a reason not to do it. However, it is highly likely that you will be asked to leave. I speak from experience. My sister's friend brought her small dog to my sister's van. The staff stood over them whilst they packed and escorted them off site. It wasn't even her dog!

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 02/02/2026 15:36

Put the dog in kennels.

YWBVU to take the dog. I am a dog owner but never book pet friendly accommodation, I don’t want to sit on sofas where lots of dogs have been.

Hopefully someone spots//reports you if you do.

Not mad. Just another entitled pet owner.

Every dog goes to the kennels for a first time.

Taking your dog is not an option.

Of course it's an option 😂

No dog has ever been in kennels until their first time.

‘My dog is tiny, doesn’t shed hair and doesn’t bark’

This is right there with ‘I’m actually 55 but look like I’m late 30s’ and ‘well it wasn’t my children officer’ and ‘the cheque is in the post’.

You signed up for a caravan with specific rules, please follow them.

It doesn’t matter that she doesn’t shed hair……..she will still shed dander and that is an allergen.

Put the dog in kennels for the duration of your holiday

Bumbelinaaa · 02/02/2026 15:41

It’s really surprising that your tiny, non barking, non shedding dog, that can be left for multiple hours unsupervised, has nobody willing to look after it with a couple of weeks notice 🤔

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/02/2026 15:41

I am a dog lover and have a dog but you can't do this @oceanmountain . We go away with our dog in our own camper van but still have to pay extra for the dog. Some sites are strictly no dogs. I don"t think you'll get away with this and it would be wrong to try.

My mums dog had never been in a kennel until he did.

They treated him like a bloody king. He loved it.
