Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

I bet OP’s badly trained dog jumps up at other people when it is out and off the lead, and she just laughs and says ‘he’s just being friendly!’ She is the kind of person that gets the good and responsible dog owners a bad name.

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

It should be an option if you want to go on holiday in pet free accommodation
You are saying your dog is more important than not only abiding to the rules you agreed to when you booked the holiday but also the people who have booked the caravan the week after you.

YeOldeGreyhound · 03/02/2026 16:35

Tryagain26 · 03/02/2026 16:20

And what about the people who use the caravan after you who are allergic to dogs and have a terrible holiday because you took your dog into a pet free caravan. It's selfish.

It is not just that. If OP gets away with it, why would she bother booking dog-friendly accommodation in future if she managed to save money? Some places charge extra for dogs.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 03/02/2026 16:37

For the love of God OP, just report your thread to MNHQ and give them some shite about how your thread is identifying, get it deleted and save us all from your endless BS.🙄

mummygranny · 03/02/2026 16:40

check with the site if you can change the caravan Maybe there is someone who has
booked a dog friendly as only that availability and would rather have a non dog caravan
Has the site got a Facebook page you could ask if someone would like to swap
Maybe you can change your dates to fit in with dog sitter
If the site has other resorts maybe you can change to another
Don’t take the dog if your asked to leave you will all be disappointed

Tiswa · 03/02/2026 16:42

I will be honest @oceanmountain you sound unhinged because your relentless belief that it is fine to do this (and you choice of the word mad in the title belies your flippancy about it) even in the face of people telling you that it is selfish and inconsiderate makes you seem like Donald Trump - the only view you can see is yours and everyone else around you is deranged

Dogs don't just smell from their walks etc. A lot is down to whst they eat and to their stress levels - a highly stressed dog gives off a particular smell, and if the OP is taking her dog to a new place and leaving him alone there, the chances of the dog excreting a smell are imo pretty high.

We watched my sister in law's dog when they went on holiday. He didn't know us very well. Anyway, he absolutely stank - i was horrified. But it wore off after a couple of days. And I didn't wash him.

Btwvi never wash my dogs - two bernese mountain dogs - and they don't smell bad. They have beautiful coats and people often ask me what Im using. My previous dog was highly allergic to shampoo and I was advised to stop bathing him (by the Royal Veterinary College) and I was so impressed with the results, I did the same with these too.

I still wouldn't take them to a non dog friendly cottage though.

Oh no I wouldn't take mine to a non dog friendly accomodation either, and I've said that. It's just the point that not all dogs stink that I felt I needed to make.

Didn't bath our last collie much cos she didn't need it and she didn't smell.

Sorry but you are the one who sounds unhinged with the flippant way you've responded to some very serious points raised.

PepsiBook · 03/02/2026 16:56

You asked if you're being unreasonable... Everyone is saying yes. You're still arguing that you're not 😂

RachTheAlpaca · 03/02/2026 16:59

Of course your dog sheds and will also leave a dog smell in the caravan for the next guests.

Use kennels like everybody else!

Tryingtokeepgoing · 03/02/2026 17:06

And dog owners wonder why they are so often tarred with the label of being selfish and self centred. As ever, the slightly stupid and socially inept minority spoil it for the mainly considerate majority ;)

Every single dog smells - some might smell worse than others but you just can’t smell it

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/02/2026 17:08

To be fair, people smell too, even if what they smell of is the chemicals they apply to themselves to cover the smell of human being.

Morepositivemum · 03/02/2026 17:13

Op our dog had never been in kennels, the thing is as long as you try them for a day once or twice in the run up, making sure that they come home happy, they’ll be fine. I was terrified but he went in happy and came out happy. We’ve had one or two bad experiences but could tell after a night there so never again. He bounces in s as bd out of the places he loves!!

Lifelover16 · 03/02/2026 17:20

This must be a joke thread.

No one could actually be such a selfish, inconsiderate, entitled and ignorant person in real life.

If it’s true I hope you get found out/reported and kicked out of the caravan. If not I hope it rains the whole time and you are stuck in the van with bored and fractious kids and a stinking little dog.

DorothyCrowfootHodgkin · 03/02/2026 17:25

OP posted, saw how it went, and decided that it's not her, it's everyone else who's wrong.

Entitled, blind, and rude. I hope you have a horrible holiday.

anniegun · 03/02/2026 17:25

Dog owners can be the most selfish people. Put it in a kennel or chnage your holiday. Which bit about no dogs did you fail to understand.

It’s like smokers. If you smoke you can’t smell it. A dog owner doesn’t get that all dogs smell, regardless of cleanliness.

I know some dogs smell, but some don't. And it is just a smell. You can't expect a mammal to have no smell at all. That is just weird.
Humans fucking stink a lot of the time.

wonkytile · 03/02/2026 17:28

OP “AIBU?”
Nearly everyone “Yes very!”
OP “I don’t care I’m doing it anyway”

completely pointless thread.

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

It's a startling fact that no dog has ever been in kennels until they go in kennels.

It is an option if you allow it to be

Sorrelbird · 03/02/2026 17:44

Stop being such a CF and put your dog in kennels. If I saw you on the site I’d report you.

Weald56 · 03/02/2026 17:49

This is why dogs should be banned from all rooms/caravans etc - dog owners (well, a significant proportion of them) can't be trusted. If the OP takes the dog I hope the owners catch her, turf her & her brood out and charge her a lot of money for a full, professional clean. And if she doesn't pay, sue her.

That is silly. There will always be a need and market for dog friendly holidays.

Don't tar us all with the same brush. It's not a significant proportion. It's a few entitled people who think their lives and needs trump those of everyone around them. Most of us are aware that not everyone wants a dog around them and that there's reasons for dog free places.

There's non dog owners with the same attitude. Everyone should bend to their wants and no one else's needs matter.
