Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

Absolutely not. I’m a dog lover, but if it is not a dog friendly caravan, then you don’t take the dog that is the rule - clear and simple. Also, when you take it out for walks etc people will see you.!

Pearl69 · 03/02/2026 17:57

I own a holiday home and it’s marketed as pet free and is booked on that understanding. Our guests need to be confident that this is not breached.

I would be mightily pissed off if a dog was smuggled in and my business was compromised. However deep you clean it could still trigger an allergy. Please don’t,

Blushingm · 03/02/2026 17:58

If I owned the caravan and said no dogs and someone ignored this and brought a dog I’d be very pissed off and tell them to leave

Chinsupmeloves · 03/02/2026 17:58

Even with a small dog they will be hard to hide and the caravan will be known for none pet friendly. I would get in touch with the company and explain the situation to see if any cancellations on df caravans or extra fee. Xz

krustykittens · 03/02/2026 17:58

It's pointless replying to this thread, the OP is determined to do it but for some reason she wanted permission from complete strangers, who she then brands 'mad' and 'deranged' if they don't say, "you do you, hun". Thick as mince too, as she doesn't seem to understand than non-shedding dogs still produce dander, and it's dander that triggers allergies (apologies if this has already been pointed out). I am just commenting to say to the non-dog people that responsible dog owners are just as annoyed by people like the OP as you are. She gives us all a bad name.

YeOldeGreyhound · 03/02/2026 18:00

I hope she takes her dog, leaves the dog in the caravan when they go to evening entertainment, and her dog goes nuts and wrecks the place.

Mumlife2019 · 03/02/2026 18:00

Definitely not, places do pet friendly caravans for a reason. My daughters highly allergic to dogs and I’d be pissed if I paid for a caravan that was no pets for her

Dangerous? Really... Yes we always hear of people that die due to being near a dog. 🙄Dont be so dramatic.

If that was the case, dogs wouldn't be welcome practically everywhere. I can take my dog into the Lego store and Pandora in my city centre.

Yes you can. And it's so fucking annoying!

Dogs don't belong in shops.

onedogatoddlerandababy · 03/02/2026 18:03

All dogs shed, the allergen is their skin/dander not fur.

unless the caravan is marked dog friendly, then yes, you’d be very unreasonable to do this.

You can understand in destinations popular for walking, like the coasts, lakes, hills, fens etc., because they'd lose a lot of business from dog walkers if they weren't dog friendly.

I can't imagine a scenario where I'd need to take my dog to the city and buy Lego. She would also absolutely hate it. She quite likes a trip to a garden centre but she'd definitely not enjoy a city shopping trip.

Saucery · 02/02/2026 15:15

I wouldn’t as it’s not fair on people with allergies who might stay in the caravan after you. Also, if they find out you have a dog with you they could ask you to leave with no notice.
Is it a completely dog free site or just an extra charge for dogs that you want to avoid paying?

My nephew has a severe allergy to dogs, we had to leave holiday accomodation as he was so ill after 2 hours. It was supposed to be pet free but we think the people staying there had a dog and didn't tell anyone. If someone has a severe allergy it doesn't matter what size the dog is. We had a 5 hour driver to get there and a 5 hour drive home when we couldn't find alternative accommodation.

Markovenchip · 03/02/2026 18:07

Are there kennels local to you ,?.....my former neighbours dog used to love staying there

I think you’re being quite selfish.

there are dog friendly caravans for a reason because of allergies.

the not about the caravan site knowing. The next person to use it could end up having a severe allergic reaction.

youre better off calling the site and changing the caravan at your own expense to a dog friendly one. You dont have to pay for a sitter now 🫶

Jack80 · 03/02/2026 18:10

I would certainly ask about a cleaning fee or any caravans that are pet friendly as we have a small dog and would always take him out but it's a problem when you leave. People have allergies or simple don't want to be in a caravan where a dog has been staying.

Oh but her doggy-poggy-diddums can't possibly go to kennels: it has never been to kennels, so they are (and I quote) "not an option".

Yes, this is as self-absorbed and lacking in sense as the rest of her arguments.

Elzibub · 03/02/2026 18:14

I snuck a new kitten to one once 😊

WhatMummyMakesSheEats · 03/02/2026 18:14

There was another thread recently about a person who couldn’t find a non dog friendly hotel and has severe reactions to dogs and so couldn’t be in a room that had previously had a dog in it. It would be very selfish to take your dog to a non dog caravan.

krustykittens · 03/02/2026 18:15

Also, OP, having to cancel or defer things because there is no one to care for a much loved family member like a dog, is what responsible dog owners do and it's a good life lesson to teach your kids. They don't always come first and the world will not bend around their will.

WorkItUpYourBangle · 03/02/2026 18:15

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:14

Its a dog friendly site but I don't have a dog friendly caravan and they have non left.

So incredibly selfish and entitled. There are people with allergies that can't be around your shit machine. Leave it at home or don't go. It's not everyone else's fault that you decided to get a dog. I am so sick to the back teeth of how selfish most dog nutters are now. You've completely ruined any tolerance I had for dogs. It's just gone so far beyond insanity at this point. Well know that there are people out there completely sick and tired of it all.

Elzibub · 03/02/2026 18:14

Hopefully that didn't cause anyone with allergies a reaction when they arrived after your kitten had stayed there.

Well done you for breaking rules that are in place for a reason.

Liladog · 03/02/2026 18:16

No one on this thread thinks you are less mad to do this than you @oceanmountain

So why start the thread?

Booboobagins · 03/02/2026 18:17

oceanmountain · 03/02/2026 09:00

Some of the comments on here.... I think are ridiculous. Completley bonkers but then again this is mumsnet where no one will answer the door.

My family are dead, my friends are busy as it will be school holiday week!

I'm going to look into rover but If I cant find anything suitable then I will be taking her with me. I wont be cancelling on my kids, she's been on lots of caravan holidays with us before so I know she wont wreck the place if we leave her for a hour or two on the evening.

If I get kicked out then so be it, although I have never paid attention to what anyone is doing in the van next to me. Why would I?!

You think that because you are not owning just how entitled you sound.

Get a grip.

Allergies kill people, I know I have a type A allergy.

Don't take the dog find a last minute sitter. Don't know where you are but my friend is registered etc and does this type of work.

Changingtimes81 · 03/02/2026 18:18

Weald56 · 03/02/2026 17:49

This is why dogs should be banned from all rooms/caravans etc - dog owners (well, a significant proportion of them) can't be trusted. If the OP takes the dog I hope the owners catch her, turf her & her brood out and charge her a lot of money for a full, professional clean. And if she doesn't pay, sue her.

It is the holiday park that will Sue her when the next occupant gets a serious allergy reaction & insists on getting the caravan tested for dog dander which cleaning doesn't remove.

There are many places that I can take <my clipped, but hair-shedding> spaniel. I still wouldn't dream of housing her in non-dog friendly accommodation mainly because I'd never forgive myself if a child or adult had an asthma attack or <God forbid> died because of an allergy.

I've been in dog-friendly hotels & reported other residents who left their dogs in rooms to bark & howl for hours while they partied. It's not fair on other residents & give us responsible dog owners a bad name.

When in a dog friendly hotel my dog is always given a very long walk so that she's so tired she only wants to sleep when leave her in our room while we eat. Once we've finished eating one of us collects the dog, takes her out to stretch her legs & have a wee & she joins us for coffee in the dog-friendly area. Never any problems.

WhitePudding · 03/02/2026 18:20

Yes, you are mad.

What even was the point of starting this thread to ask if you were mad when quite clearly you are one of those who do what you want, when you want and to hell with rules and anybody else. The shining example is calling people deranged.

You honestly need to take a long hard look at yourself then come back and apologise. But you won’t. We know.
