Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

Hopefully someone who works for haven is in this thread and can do a check of sites in a couple of weeks. Put the word out across them maybe. And maybe do some general checks of the pet free spaces??

Who said I was staying at a Haven site ....

You probably shouldn't, I know there has been a bit of hysteria but I don't think it's a fair thing to do - the people who have the van after you could be allergic, and while they probably won't drop.down dead, it could make their holiday a little uncomfortable which isn't really fair.

If you've booked a caravan on a chain (e.g haven) contact them and ask for a dog friendly caravan on a nearby site if they don't have one on the site you've booked, I'd you explain the situation I'm sure they'll be accommodating.

You could contact your local council, they will have a full list of registered boarders and you could just contact each one to see if they have space, if you're in a city there will likely be quite a few, I'm in a very small town and there are 20.

In fairness, not all dogs stink and therefore not all dog friendly homes/places stink of dog.

I can smell my sister's dog when you go into her house but they rarely bathe the dog, who goes in a LOT of water and they're really bad at cleaning.

My dog on the other hand gets bathed almost daily at the moment because she loves a muddy puddle and comes home from a walk pitted, and I won't have the mud dragged round the house. We deep clean the carpets and floors at least once a week with proper solution designed to stop dog stink.

Depends on the owners. And the dog, to be honest. Boy dogs smell worse than girls overall I've found.

Dogs don't just smell from their walks etc. A lot is down to whst they eat and to their stress levels - a highly stressed dog gives off a particular smell, and if the OP is taking her dog to a new place and leaving him alone there, the chances of the dog excreting a smell are imo pretty high.

We watched my sister in law's dog when they went on holiday. He didn't know us very well. Anyway, he absolutely stank - i was horrified. But it wore off after a couple of days. And I didn't wash him.

Btwvi never wash my dogs - two bernese mountain dogs - and they don't smell bad. They have beautiful coats and people often ask me what Im using. My previous dog was highly allergic to shampoo and I was advised to stop bathing him (by the Royal Veterinary College) and I was so impressed with the results, I did the same with these too.

I still wouldn't take them to a non dog friendly cottage though.

People are being polite. Your dog stinks, the caravan will stink of dog, especially if it rains. You will be nose blind to it

There's no excuse for OPs attitude but this is the sort of comment I was referring to upthread. Not all dog owners are nose blind and we don't all have dogs and homes that stink.

Indeed.
I have stayed in dog friendly caravans, and never once noticed the smell of dog.
But as always on here, you get the froth about all dogs stinking, all dog owners have poor hygiene, and it goes on and on. It is tiring.

Who said I was staying at a Haven site ....

Wow the previous poster had it unhinged or deeply unpleasant.
Many people have explained to you why this is not ok to do and yet you post condescending and frankly odd replies.
Thankfully all the dog owners I know are responsible ones unlike you.

Are you ok? you sound a bit unhinged.... or bored. I cant make up my mind. Going to phone the site😂

No I haven't told the site that I wanted a dog accommodation.

I made a separate enquiry to book a dog friendly caravan at their site and they told me they were sold out for my dates. I said thank you and hung up. I used my work phone and didn't give any details about my existing booking, I didn't even give my name or booking reference.

Do you know what sounds a bit unhinged?

Trying to smuggle a dog in a dog-free accommodation knowing perfectly well that you can endanger someone else by doing it.
That's not negligence, that's effectively intent to cause harm.

SharpFox · 03/02/2026 14:55

I know it's not right, but I'd probably be tempted to do it. Is there definitely no one who can have her/him? I totally understand not wanting to disappoint the kids..have u looked at borrowmydoggy.com? Or can you pay a local teenager to pop in gor feeding, cuddles and walks?? X

Oh! you would, would you. Would you also be tempted to not give a Monkeys if a family with a dog allergy child became ill if they were next in the caravan & the dander was embedded in the furnishing etc. It takes a long time for this to stop causing issues not just one deep clean 🙄

I'm fine, thank you; merely not a selfish care-for-nobody like you. I have more concern for practically everyone in the entire country than I do for you, and I hope you get a serious and nasty comeuppance for your crotty behaviour.

Your post about how you carefully didn't mention to the caravan's owners that you already had a booking which you wanted to change makes it clear you had planned all along to take the dog whatever they said, although you knew perfectly well that it was the wrong thing to do and despicable behaviour, as well as knowing that you were potentially causing damage both to other people who might stay in the caravan after you, and to the owners of the caravan. What a star you are!

Hang your head, and stop trying to shame me about your negligent actions.

GuineaPigPosie · 03/02/2026 16:13

There is no such thing as a dog that doesn't shed

Tableforjoan · 03/02/2026 16:15

Imagine how op would be if the coin was flipped and it was her or her child who could have a bad allergy and someone smuggled a dog in prior.

oh well you can’t argue with stupid. They beat you with their experience in it🤣🤣

Wow. I do wonder if this thread is real?! I think OP is rage baiting.

Just so deceitful - using a different phone?!

OP you still haven’t answered why you bothered to post? Other than to cause anger and disgust - are you enjoying the reaction?

you asked are you mad - yes, yes you are. Please don’t do it.

No don't do it. It isn't fair to people who will be using the caravan after you. What if they are allergic to dogs, or asthmatic and triggered by dog hair. You might think she doesn't shed but she will leave a trace and if you are going into a pet free caravan it isn't fair

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/02/2026 16:18

Excellent! I had so much rather be deranged than be you. Or come to that your poor children, with you for an example of how to behave.

Its not a different phone on purpose. It is my work phone, that is on my desk, that I was sat at when I decided to make the call.

I think everyone's getting worked up because you don't appear to give a stuff about anyone else except your own little darlings!
I really suggest everyone stops replying to this lovely lady now as she's obviously taking no notice so please ignore her.

Now imagine if I sneak her in and dont get caught at all, no drama, no problems, we all just carry on with our lives and I leave after having a nice time for me kids...

And what about the people who use the caravan after you who are allergic to dogs and have a terrible holiday because you took your dog into a pet free caravan. It's selfish.
