To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

LastChristmasigaveyousomesocks · 29/01/2026 19:58

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

Are the government of Syria trying to pressure us to take her back?

We refused to take her back. Despite her being our citizen. And @ChickenPet I agree she should come back. But we’ve refused.

NewGirlInTown · 29/01/2026 20:33

Really? I find that astonishing. He has broken every manifesto promise and introduced serious policies like removing juries, which he has no mandate for.
He has sold Britain down the river to the globalists in Davos.
You must have a very superficial understanding of politics, OP.

Yes NewGirlInTown

You are bang on the money. Starmer is hypocritical dressed up and with the personality if as a wet lettuce. And a very dangerous man at that.

Another promise broken yesterday on WASPI compensationm

He is a Politician after all and is just out for personal glory and gains and to help his friends.

As for being a Human Rights Barrister.
Well that says it all really, and is a big factor in the UK not withdrawing from the ECHR.

He and Labour absolutely love all these illegal immigrants and so called asylum seekers at the expense of decent UK Citizens.

And that is one of the reasons he is really despised and so is Labour. They dumped their decent traditional British White Labour Voters years ago.

Starmer is just another Blair in the making. Trust him at your peril.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 30/01/2026 19:54

Of course people look around and can see and hear that things have changed significantly in the last few decades.

And immigration may not have been such a high factor in Wales re voting intentions bearing in mind Labour have been hopeless and theres little Conservative presence. Of course Reform would do OK.

Edited

The discourse was all about immigration. Of which there is virtually none.

But have the Syrian government been asking us to take her back? Which presumably is the parallel you were trying to make between the UK pressurising other countries to take back their own citizens.

LancashireButterPie · 30/01/2026 20:36

I don't mind him, he seems sensible. I'm fairly centrist and didn't mind John Major, Theresa May, Gordon Brown and even Sunak either. But OMG I'm so glad that prat Boris has left the building and as for Liz Truss!

I detest "showmen", I wish Kemi would settle down and be a proper politician instead of a rabble raising teenager. I would love to have seen Sajid Javid in some sort of leadership role, he had great ideas when he was briefly in charge of the NHS.

But ultimately I'd take anyone over reform.

cardibach · 30/01/2026 20:27

But you're only assuming people voted on that basis. Whereas Im saying they probably just wanted to kick out Labour as they were useless but also hated the Conservatives and Reform were a good alternative.

Name a leader who was liked? Apart from Blair? Who didn't have social
Media to contend with?
What Keir is getting is exactly consistent with all other labour leaders since and in fact most leaders full stop.

I’m not sure that even Blair was liked.

He inherited a very good economy and an unhappy opposition. He had it easy. After he squandered the economic legacy he caved in to the mentalist Brown, who then had to face American-caused meltdown. Not great for Brown, but even so he was totally useless.

Blair’s legacy is the Iraq war.

No foreign aid to countries that wont accept their own failed asylum seekers.

Do we have any foreign aid budget left?as it pays for asylum seekers surely you believe its all gone?

I don't get it, I like him. He's probably become Prime Minister at one of the worst points in recent history! Geo politics is literally insane right now, he was picking up after years of Tory inefficiency, the country has limited funds (maybe due to the cost of covid playing a large part?), people are utterly fed up, overworked, underpaid and feeling hard done by, and everyone wanted a miracle overnight, which he obviously can't do, especially given the amount of time he's having to spend on worldwide issues!

Trump and Farage on the other hand, utter pieces of shit.

Nobody expected a miracle, or even a quick improvement. They just didn’t want a spineless tosser making everything worse.

What has he made worse? Obviously you're entitled to your opinion, but I think 'spineless tosser' is harsh, he's literally dealing with insane dictators/wannabe dictators all over the globe, I don't think that's an easy task!

For “spineless tosser” I was thinking more of his supine conduct towards his backbenchers TBH.

Jk987 · 30/01/2026 21:22

Who hates him that much in reality though? Because it sounds like you’re talking about keyboard warriors.

MathsMum3 · 30/01/2026 21:23

This must be a bot. Over 24 hours and the OP hasn't responded to any of the comments. I don't know anyone who has "a visceral hatred of Keir". On what basis are they making this claim?

I think you have to look at the whole picture though, it's a mental time to be trying to lead a country. I'm not sure what he has made worse specifically? Things weren't great before! I can't see any other potential leader who is feasibly offering anything better than he is, not anything that is actually possible anyway?

Countless MN threads. There’s an entire series that does nothing but rant about the government in general and Starmer in particular.

When crowds at football matches and the darts sing that Starmer’s a wanker I think we can assume that he’s hated. I doubt they’re using keyboards at the football grounds and at Alexandra Palace.

There’s a long-running Starmer glee club series of threads. I wouldn’t assume he’s liked in the country just because some MN posters spend their time bigging him up.

A Starmer glee club? Unfathomable. What are they gleeful about I wonder.

Dymaxion · 30/01/2026 21:38

Too busy hob nobbing in Davos

Very much like David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Nigel Farage, Kemi Badenoch ?

That sounds fun. What’s the series?
