To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

LastChristmasigaveyousomesocks · 29/01/2026 19:58

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

I really like him and think he’s a good prime
minister. I really can’t stand the level of vitriol directed at him.

I also wouldn’t kick him out of bed.

Countless MN threads. There’s an entire series that does nothing but rant about the government in general and Starmer in particular.

If it is the series of threads I think you mean, it hosts posters who share some very dubious far right conspiracy theories.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 30/01/2026 21:46

I do not understand the visceral levels of hatred/love that people have for anyone that they have never met before in their lives.

However... I do understand why a lot of farmers are not best pleased with him, courtesy of the inheritance tax business ("Starmer the Farmer Harmer" and the likes). Farms should be left in the hands of those who know what to do with them, not sold off to be another housing estate, or to someone who has no experience of what to do with a herd of cows/flock of sheep/arable land etc. We need to keep our green space for a million reasons, to care for our land and livestock, and to keep producing food and milk to help with feeding our nation.

I’m not sure that even Blair was liked.

He inherited a very good economy and an unhappy opposition. He had it easy. After he squandered the economic legacy he caved in to the mentalist Brown, who then had to face American-caused meltdown. Not great for Brown, but even so he was totally useless.

Blair’s legacy is the Iraq war.

Well in relation to Blair not necessarily being liked - exactly.
Our media is somewhat somewhat unhealthy.

The threads are just posters chatting and getting away from pro Labour.

Where are these threads? I’ve never seen far right threads on MN! I’m surprised it’s allowed. Tbh.

iloveecats · 30/01/2026 21:38

That sounds fun. What’s the series?

@iloveecatscome and join in, it’s in chat. It’s better than endless pro Starmer posts and multiple threads that were anti last gov

I didn't say the threads are far right. They are not in general. MNHQ frowns on TAATs, so best to steer away from discussing too much.

But you're only assuming people voted on that basis. Whereas Im saying they probably just wanted to kick out Labour as they were useless but also hated the Conservatives and Reform were a good alternative.

Except they ultimately voted Plaid.

Centrism, the worst of both worlds instead of the best.

Or not extremists, take a balanced pragmatic view...
sorry to upset you diddums

Didn't ignore it at all. I responded.

We don't want them here. We have no duty towards them. We can deport them.

With no hint of irony. Amazing

ChickenPet · 30/01/2026 22:17

BIossomtoes · 30/01/2026 20:09

Stopping them shipping people off to an unsafe country. Shocking.

We didn't want them here.

ChickenPet · 30/01/2026 22:18

cardibach · 30/01/2026 20:26

We refused to take her back. Despite her being our citizen. And @ChickenPet I agree she should come back. But we’ve refused.

We removed her citizenship and then refused to have her. She's not a UK citizen anymore.

So other countries could do the same. Don't be obtuse.

I like this thread so far - everyone's saying what I think

Me, too! Only posting this to help prop up the entirely reasonable "Starmer's a grown up, thank god" line of thought.

Abd80 · 29/01/2026 20:29

It’s all the right wing tabloids badmouthing him and anyone from labour
personally I think he’s a silver fox
and a human rights lawyer to boot !

I like him too, but more like a respected headteacher than a silver fox! He has zero sex appeal. Trustworthy though.

cardibach · 30/01/2026 22:19

Why would they? Shamina Begun joined ISIS.

Even so, if a country denaturalises someone else, how on earth do we benefit from having them here?

I do not care about them.

ChickenPet · 30/01/2026 22:28

cardibach · 30/01/2026 22:19

The British public, UK citizens.

He was actually doing this pro bono? So its actions as well as views. Judge a man by what he does etc...

What actions has farage undertaken that he should perhaps be ashamed of? Or is it a one way street?
Anyway this thread has just deteriorated into the usual blinkered and spoon fed conversation about immigration. Following reforms drum beat. There is no competing with this one track view.

Raspberrydaiquiri · 30/01/2026 22:35

He’s an intelligent, sensible, kind man and the British public have very short memories,,,just look at his predecessors. There is no comparison. Boris or Keir, who is the more trustworthy??

OonaStubbs · 30/01/2026 22:40

Labour have completely lost the vote of white working class men that used to be their bread and butter. Which is why you get the anti-Starmer chants at football, the darts etc.

Rishi Sunak.
