To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

Which media do you look to / read etc?

A variety, although some for entertainment purposes. I am politically neutral atm

Good on Trump for doing that and being strong. We can also do that and deny a myriad of visas for countries that don't accept their own citizens.

I certainly don't want them here.

Ignored the point raised i see

The polls is where he got the evidence for that from.

Which polls? Where? Can anyone link? Who did they ask?

I think unless you live in a bubble or somewhere particularly refined, most people can just look around and see what the issue is regarding illegal immigration. People can trust their own eyes and make their own decisions. They just happen to disagree with what you think. That's democracy for you!

People don’t look around though. They just take the right wing narrative. Case in point - Caerphilly. Around the by election there was all sorts of rhetoric about immigration which fuelled the rise (thankfully not victory) of Reform. There are virtually no immigrants in Caerphilly - and most of the ones there are are Ukrainian so you couldn’t tell by looking.

Lol yeah lets slap France/EU with a 200% tariff.... Trump hasn't gone after the countries where the migrants are from, just which country they were last in.. Mexico... in our case, it would be France....

Stop visa's great idea, deny our life sciences, uni's and tech the worlds best.... can't pick n chose!

Unbelievable

The world's best most likely won't be coming from the third world. Even so, this pressure would help.

We can pressure the migrant's country of origin. And the country of origin cannot refuse their own citizen. It's their citizen.

1dayatatime · 30/01/2026 19:41

I don't think that Starmer is necessarily a bad person, somewhat inexperienced and out of his depth perhaps but there are certainly a lot worse alternatives within the Labour Party.

The problem as I see it is that Labour can't borrow any more money (as Rachel Reeves and Liz Truss found out), they can't cut spending because of the backbenchers so faced with rising spending they can only increase taxation (fiscal drag, employer NI etc).

This increase in taxation then causes the economy to slow down meaning lower tax revenues and the need to further increase taxes etc in a doom loop. I don't think the Conservatives would be able to do a much better job and both Reform and the Greens would do a considerably worse/ terminal job.

Didn't ignore it at all. I responded.

We don't want them here. We have no duty towards them. We can deport them.

BeanQuisine · 30/01/2026 19:48

He seems to me like a chap willing to taking on responsibilities in particularly trying and twisted times, as heir to a shedload of mistakes by previous governments, in an increasingly weird world.

He's somewhat out of his depth but let's face it, anyone would be.

I think those writing him off are looking for some kind of completely unrealistic salvation.

Have you heard of Shamima Begum?

Yes. Why? I feel it would be okay to bring her back and have her in prison here.

Of course people look around and can see and hear that things have changed significantly in the last few decades.

And immigration may not have been such a high factor in Wales re voting intentions bearing in mind Labour have been hopeless and theres little Conservative presence. Of course Reform would do OK.

I’d rather Starmer any day than Farage and the Reform care home party for failed Tories, Trump sycophants and incompetents. I know he hasn’t been the greatest PM but he has done some good things. The press damn him for anything and everything because he is leading Labour, including this week’s trip to China, which has been a positive thing in my opinion. He even gets blamed for Jimmy Savile never being prosecuted, despite police never bringing a case to the CPS. I could go on and on about the unfair hysteria, even criticising reviving the Erasmus scheme which makes it much easier for kids to study in Europe because it would supposedly mean Britain being overrun with reciprocal European students.

It did move people there voluntarily which is the cost free way to do it.

One person. And the Rwanda got £750 million. It doesn’t look much like value for money to me, let alone cost free.

If he was prepared to take responsibility for anything he wouldn't be u-turning at a hint og negative press or disgruntled back benchers all the time.

The PP is talking about the ROI.

EasternStandard · 30/01/2026 20:02

People are bad at reading posts. @Pineneedlesincarpet was talking about voluntary movement to ROI. She was right, it was the outcome from a deterrent.

It's a Reform strategy pre Denton and Gorton election. The posts are everywhere. You are right it's completely out of proportion..

I think people really just don’t like him that much. Apart from 11% who approve.

Blooming courts stopping the government trying to actually get something done.

Stopping them shipping people off to an unsafe country. Shocking.

Things are happening a bit slowly but:
hospital waiting lists are improving
crime rates are down in all parts of country
inflation is dropping
he hasn’t taken us to wa
he skilfully handles Trump
he’s improving our relationship with EU
No wild parties in Downing Street
he doesn’t refer to Hamas as friends
he hasn’t crashed economy
he’s removed child benefit cap
he hasn’t used terms like n*** in the wood pile or watermelon smiles
he hasn’t liked a tweet supporting a hideously antisemitic mural
he’s restored European travel for students

i don’t know! What could it be? Something to do with not being a Tory or writing for Mail / spectator/ telegraph? Or not sucking up to the Murdochs? Maybe?
