To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

Well yes, as i asked up thread "Are we prepared to murder?"

Which is what you may well be doing by sending back people to Sudan, Afghan, Iran.... sending someone to their probable death is no different from punting then back out to sea at Dover.... they might make it back to france... might not...

Thats not the definition of murder.

Splitting hairs there.

I think sending a ex Afghan soldier who fought along side UK/US troops back, is tantamount to murder.

Or a woman who has fled Iran after being accused of protesting...

Remember, for a deterrent to work, no one can have their claim heard, no exceptions.... that is Tory and Reform policy.

ChickenPet · 30/01/2026 18:21

Alexandra2001 · 30/01/2026 18:02

Deport to where? Most countries will not accept them back, the countries are war zones with no means to fly in or require payment eg Afghanistan - do you want to give money to the Taliban who killed 457 uk soldiers, i dont.

Their home country. The country has to accept their own citizens. And yes you can find a way to get them there.

I know people who say "sink the boats". I disagree with that vehemently and say just deport them back to their home country. For all the ills of the Trump, he's been very strict and blatantly refusing to process asylum applications. He's protecting his citizens. We should do the same.

Saw today in Hamburg a South Sudanese migrant dragged a young German girl under a subway train and killed them both. We need to wake up.

Not really. Its just defending your home. Which a country can do using lethal force.

Anyway what I think will happen eventually (because it has to) is that technology will solve this by some sort of electronic border in the Channel whereby a motor of a boat will be deactivated or something. And anyone who decides to chance the trip is making it at their own risk. Thats perfectly reasonable.

I saw a TV political presenter on the daily politics show referring to him as the most unpopular prime minister ever. I really did think’ where’s your evidence for that’. Personally I disliked Margaret Thatcher most. Also Boris Johnson and Liz Truss are above him in the rankings IMO. The ones I like are Gordon Brown, Theresa May, John Major not because I necessarily agree with them but because I think their motivation was to try to improve life for people. It seems many people think they’re the boring ones but I don’t want a “personality” in charge particularly. I don’t dislike Starmer, I think he sometimes tries to tell people what they want to hear and assesses the way the wind’s blowing before speaking but he’s far from the worst PM ever.

I think everyone was so fed up and were expecting miracles overnight. Which is never going to happen regardless of who is in charge.

Yes, this. How long were the last lot in for? 12 years? 14? You can't just undo all that.
I'm happy with KS as PM. I think politicians should be boring administrators/lawyerly types. I'm sick of personality politics. It never goes well.

The polls is where he got the evidence for that from.

Trump has the upper hand on Mexico etc, he can just threaten them with 200% tariff, they have no choice.

Do you mean like we accept back our own citizens? if only there was a prominent case where we stripped a UK person of her citizenship to avoid that....

He is rated above Badenoch and pretty much evens with Farage on who would make the UKs best PM....

Yes but if you're going to be boring and have no personality at least be competent? And stop u-turning the whole time after people have adjusted their lives based on your initial decision?

Good on Trump for doing that and being strong. We can also do that and deny a myriad of visas for countries that don't accept their own citizens.

I certainly don't want them here.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 30/01/2026 18:29

This is all very pointless anyway: Starmer will be out in May if not before.

Nobody likes him, nobody trusts him, nobody thinks he’s got any talent or ability - leaving aside MN Labour boosters of course.

ChickenPet · 30/01/2026 18:32

No party: Tory or labour actually made a genuine concerted effort to actually stop the boat crossings at all.

Somehow the Trump administration is being strong and actually taking a stance on illegal immigration. Unfortunately they are being excessive and sweeping those legal residents and US citizens.

Personal ratings. They’re lowest for Starmer.

He calls himself a socialist and acts like one. Off the top of my head: nationalising the railways, raising taxes, anti private and small business, underfunded state provided 'free' breakfast for all children. All good socialist stuff.

He’s not anti private business as long as it’s big business.

Every pledge made before becoming the Labour Party leader, all broken 😡
Forgive me for momentarily breaking out of lurk mode, but this is such a sore point with me 😮

This was the Jeremy Corbyn 2019 manifesto right?

Absolutely lunacy. We hated JC vehemently for wanting to increase our income tax

It is people needing an outlet to their hatred
not saying I have any opinion about him
the same as people hate on Trump

Hardly the same thing!

btw, i was wrong about Badenoch, its Farage who is in 3rd.....

I believe Labour has done many things for the good and taken several wrong turnings. Following on from the ridiculous presidential system in the USA many have begun to believe that power resides in one individual. It’s nonsense. Society throws up trends at different times in history. Now history has thrown up cults of the individual. It is exemplified in individuals saying ‘they are entitled’, ‘ I am entitled’. The opposite of which is that no one else is. Keir Starmer, and all the legions of of Tory PMs before him, and Sadiq Khan become targets. [ not sure how Burnham has avoided it; but were he PM, I am sure he would be pilloried too. let’s look at the historical context to identify what is actually happening. Keir Starmer and his time in office is bit a reflection of a huge historical transition that we are going through. The nature of democracy is changing. He is unfortunate that he appears to be the butt of the change. We all need to look beyond the end of our noses.

Lol yeah lets slap France/EU with a 200% tariff.... Trump hasn't gone after the countries where the migrants are from, just which country they were last in.. Mexico... in our case, it would be France....

Stop visa's great idea, deny our life sciences, uni's and tech the worlds best.... can't pick n chose!

Unbelievable

But the PP said " I saw a TV political presenter on the daily politics show referring to him as the most unpopular prime minister ever. I really did think’ where’s your evidence for that’.

And I replied that the polls were where the evidence was from. Which show that KS is the most unpopular PM ever. So I don't understand your point....

Oh I SEE what youve done there! You've cleverly avoided that and compared KS to people who arent and havent been PM!!! As opposed to what the PP and I were actually talking about!!! Sneaky old you but luckily I picked up on it. Phew!
