McDonald’s Vegan Options

SunnySideDeepDown · 28/01/2026 18:07

McDonalds are axing the only vegan happy meal option, now only McPlant burger will be available. Due to poor sales.

AIBU to think it’s a no brainer that kids don’t want curry vegetable sticks?! My kids HATE them. Did they really think kids would eat them?

There are loads of good vegan options available now, including fantastic veggie nugget options. But instead of trying those, vegetarian and vegan children (or those who need halal or kosher meat etc), now need to order off the main menu and not have a happy meal.

Why, in a world full of vegan options, has McDonalds got this all wrong?

I’m vegan and I voted YABU. McDonald’s is the devil.

SunnySideDeepDown · 28/01/2026 18:11

McDonalds isn’t for everyone, admittedly. We’re a vegetarian household and it’s a monthly treat for us.

They don’t care about catering for the minority - I have coeliacs and can literally only eat fries and drinks and fruit bags…

Absolutely. Garbage pretending to be food.

Gettingbysomehow · 28/01/2026 18:14

There is no way Id eat vege curry sticks. Yuck. What were they thinking?

That sucks. I’m not very clued up on allergens - what options would you hope McDonalds would stock for you? I’m assuming nothing that looks too much like anything that contains gluten in case of mix ups?

The last two McPlant meals I had from McDonalds were so awful I finally stopped going there. Nearly £8 for a cardboard roll with plastic cheese, somehow over and undercooked fries and a cup of mostly ice.

Right?! Especially young kids who want happy meals. I guess the only perk of them was that my kids wouldn’t eat them so I got to eat theirs on top of my McPlant burger 🫣

It's McDonald's. They aren't going to cater to us. It's better to give your money to actual vegan places anyway.

HolesInTheAlbertHall · 28/01/2026 18:17

Unfortunately this thread will now fill up with people so desperate to prove something on an anonymous forum. What is the point of endless posts pretending you never eat it.

Op I agree that the spicy vegetable sticks were an odd choice especially for a happy meal. They could have chosen something much more likely to sell, like vegan nuggets.

SunnySideDeepDown · 28/01/2026 18:18

@Locutus2000 I’ve had some amazing McPlant burgers, and some cold ones 🤢 seems to be very hit and miss.

I’m sad they’re axing the vegetable deluxe burger. Probably because it’s veggie but not vegan, so the Mcplant will be the only veggie/vegan option now. It’s very poor. Not every veggie wants to eat vegan mayo, vegan cheese etc

Stickytoffeetartt · 28/01/2026 18:20

That's disappointing. What did your dc get all along in their happy meal? I actually never realised that you could get mcplant happy meals!

I used to love the vegetable deluxe burger (as an adult) but haven’t seen it sold in years. Now it’s two curry vegetable sticks wedged between a bun as far as I’m aware.

Also love a bean burger, bring them back McDonalds!!

Yes, the changed it a few years ago but still called it the vegetable deluxe. The old version was better.

Bjorkdidit · 28/01/2026 18:23

I think the problem is that so few vegans will eat at McDonald's that sales of vegan alternatives to the mains will be too low for them to bother with or keep a separate section of the grill for.

If there was a very unusual situation where a vegan was desperate for food and McDonald's was the only outlet available, they could always get chips, carrot sticks or salad and a drink. Possibly even a bread roll aka a hamburger with no burger if the bread is vegan.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 28/01/2026 18:23

I’d imagine most vegans would be anti McDonald’s in general and would find somewhere else, understandably. It’s never going to be a big market there!

They could fairly easily make all their fried foods gluten free - a surprising amount of "breaded" stuff in supermarkets is actually gluten free now.
Also, a gluten free muffin/bun option would be good (with appropriate measures to avoid cross contamination). Food on the go is a particular challenge for coeliacs - many of us carry snacks, but it would be great to have another option to grab on the go

Onceuponasunflower · 28/01/2026 18:23

Oh no, my DC love a veggie dipper happy meal, it's a holiday tradition for them. We don't eat fake meat vegetarian food so the Mcplant is no good. Grr!

MummyInTheNecropolis · 28/01/2026 18:24

Kids who eat halal and kosher can have fish fingers, but yeah it’s a shame for the vegans.

BellaTrixLeStrange1 · 28/01/2026 18:24

We are vegan and wouldn’t give a penny of our money to McDonalds.

SunnySideDeepDown · 28/01/2026 18:26

I should have clarified - the vegan options are all that’s available for vegetarians too! Of which there are so many these days who also still want the occasional fast food.

OP posts:
ComtesseDeSpair · 28/01/2026 18:27

Ultimately it’s just about cost, market research will have indicated that the number of vegans who are willing to eat at a meat-based fast food joint will be very a very small subset of an already very small subset. I shouldn’t imagine there are many children who eat halal or kosher (the latter particularly) eating at McDonald’s because their storage and kitchen procedures mean the food will be neither, even if it’s vegetable-based.

TheWytch · 28/01/2026 18:29

I am vegetarian, have been for decades. I couldn't tell you when I last ate in McDonalds.

Same, but I don’t really care as I wouldn’t eat there. I’m not sure a company that makes their money from primarily selling meat (and god knows the rearing conditions) would be one I would look to go to if I was a vegan (I’m not) anyway.
