McDonald’s Vegan Options

SunnySideDeepDown · 28/01/2026 18:07

McDonalds are axing the only vegan happy meal option, now only McPlant burger will be available. Due to poor sales.

AIBU to think it’s a no brainer that kids don’t want curry vegetable sticks?! My kids HATE them. Did they really think kids would eat them?

There are loads of good vegan options available now, including fantastic veggie nugget options. But instead of trying those, vegetarian and vegan children (or those who need halal or kosher meat etc), now need to order off the main menu and not have a happy meal.

Why, in a world full of vegan options, has McDonalds got this all wrong?

Why would a vegan or vegetarian go to a burger joint?

Why would they not???

A few decades ago? My youngest is 12 and vegetarian happy meals weren’t a thing when he was little. Burger King is much better for veggies. Just go there instead

Why should I travel 40mins to a Burger King when I live 10 mins from McDonald’s? Again, it’s awful your child didn’t have a vegetarian happy meal option. Mine did, but now doesn’t so I’m moaning about it. If that makes you feel resentful, feel free to skip.

They are a commercial business, if they sold plenty of vegetarian or vegan happy meals they would not be axing them. My colleague has a second job at McDonald’s, he’s yet (after 4 months) to sell a veggie burger or anything veggie, we were talking earlier today, I’m guessing it’s not a popular place to visit for veggie families

One can only hope that the swing against UPFS will kill off the McPlant. I am totally sick of having to make to with a token vegan option. I don't eat fake meat nor do I want to.

What is wrong with a good old bean burger. I used to really enjoy the Burger King one occasionally.

The Burger King bean burger was so good, I wish they would bring it back

Well I’m not really cultured, but obvs you were being sarcastic, what about a lovely vegetarian take away or delivery pizza as a treat (not sure if you’re vegan - sorry) or maybe buy some nice buns and salad and some oven chips and the meat style vegan burgers to cook at home, it’s pretty quick and easy and actually so much nicer.

I could and do all of that, but this thread isn’t about that. We enjoy our monthly McDonald’s trip and enjoyed having a happy meal option (even though it was rubbish).

Im just hoping they’re ending the dippers with a view to introduce vegan nuggets soon!

@TheWytch I agree, bean burgers would be my preference. I enjoy the taste of the McPlant but would choose a bean burger over it.

I’m not sure BK have any burgers suitable now do they ? they have had to state that their BK plant burger is cooked on the same grill as the beef ones, which obviously would deter vegans/veggies but ok for people having a meat free meal, I could be wrong, I have not set foot in a BK since the 90’s when they did the spicy bean burgers,

I suspect they are more popular in some branches than others though.

That was kind of my point. They’re not popular because kids don’t want funky tasting vegetable sticks. There are lots of alternative options they could and should explore (mini bean burgers, mini McPlants, vegan nuggets, toasted cheese sandwich)…

They aren't curry flavour though, they are pesto?

If you want your kids to eat crap -which is what all these fast food places are- then what’s 40 mins.

Just the fake chicken burger now at BK. Yuk. I’m a veggie and I want a burger that doesn’t resemble meat.

I've found that in lots of places. They just lump vegan and veggie together and think it suits all.

In reality, I'm vegetarian but I can't stand vegan cheese etc., which cuts down the menu choices even further for me.

Edited

I'm not veggie or vegan but I will often prefer a veggie option and I don't think I'm alone in this. But I don't want fake meat. I want veggies and I like cheese. I want something decent.

So I will stick up for veggies on this because there is something of a middle market that isn't being catered for and the number of people reducing meat but not necessarily strict is increasing. The vegan market is actually pretty small to begin with so I'd argue making the only options vegan isn't serving a large part of the market.

There a lot of good vegan recipes out there but if you improved the quality of the veggie options you would have more takers for the veggie options across the board. And there's higher margins to be made on these meals too.

Wellthisisdifficult · 30/01/2026 20:15

Tbh the only time I eat at McDonald’s is when we are driving places, I’ll dying and dead relatives scattered across the country means lots of hours travelling and McDonald’s is often the only option - hopefully they keep at least one vegan option other than just chips

@BlackSheepThisYear totally agree, for me all those fast food places serve shitty sub par rubbish overpriced food and i would much rather make my own meals and as an absolute last resort I’d use one. I’m not a snob, or cultured or whatever though, I just don’t want anything to do with them and I know I can do so much better

EllenWest · 30/01/2026 21:12

@BlackSheepThisYear oh sorry I used the wrong quote when replying to you

Needacupofteaandcrackers · 30/01/2026 21:33

I found a bean burger in tesco frozen section almost the same as the old BK bean burger

Yes I loved the BK spicy beanburger and always buy the Tesco ones.

Angelic999 · 30/01/2026 23:24

I'm another one who still misses the old Veggie deluxe - it had a lovely crunchy topping, not like the soggy fingers they replaced it with. I do like a Mcplant too.

You’re hilarious. All kids eat crap sometimes, all adults do!

To say otherwise is disingenuous and im not here to listen to you pretend your kids eat cleanly 24/7.

Yeah I think I must have got that wrong. But my family are major pesto fans and all of us don’t like the vegetable sticks so, personally, I don’t think they taste like pesto. They do resemble a curry flavour to me.

Just eat elsewhere. McDonald's is awful, I wouldn't eat there if you paid me.

My child is grown up and I have a grandchild now. Both when my child was small and now with my grandchild, we go to nice places that sell proper food. Not UPF/junk.

MammaBear1 · 31/01/2026 07:24

I eat the odd Maccy D. It’s ok mostly but not especially my preference. There are lots of other takeaway places that cater to kids and vegans. Just try somewhere else. It’s not a big deal. I’m not vegetarian or vegan but I do eat plant based meals if I fancy them.

pencilcaseandcabbage · 31/01/2026 12:37

Well, I'll be using up my McDonald's points this weekend before the veggie deluxe disappears on Monday. We go there every couple of weeks for vegetarian DD who adores the veggie deluxe and detests the McPlant. Unless they start stocking other vegetarian alternatives again, we are unlikely to be back as fries will be the only thing on the menu she'll eat. That's a regular family purchase they've lost. And probably a win for our local chip shop who are the other place selling a veggie burger she enjoys.

guinnessguzzler · 31/01/2026 12:57

McDonald's don't give a shit about people or planet, been boycotting them for years. Even if they have 'vegan' options, I don't believe they're compatible with a Vegan lifestyle.
