McDonald’s Vegan Options

SunnySideDeepDown · 28/01/2026 18:07

McDonalds are axing the only vegan happy meal option, now only McPlant burger will be available. Due to poor sales.

AIBU to think it’s a no brainer that kids don’t want curry vegetable sticks?! My kids HATE them. Did they really think kids would eat them?

There are loads of good vegan options available now, including fantastic veggie nugget options. But instead of trying those, vegetarian and vegan children (or those who need halal or kosher meat etc), now need to order off the main menu and not have a happy meal.

Why, in a world full of vegan options, has McDonalds got this all wrong?

They could fairly easily make all their fried foods gluten free - a surprising amount of "breaded" stuff in supermarkets is actually gluten free now.
Also, a gluten free muffin/bun option would be good (with appropriate measures to avoid cross contamination). Food on the go is a particular challenge for coeliacs - many of us carry snacks, but it would be great to have another option to grab on the go

They do in Spain!!

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 28/01/2026 18:36

Vegan options have decimated vegetarian options, all over, not just at McDonald’s.

Yes and I hate it.

Its lazy. When I was growing up there were much better veggie options and maybe one vegan option

sansgender · 28/01/2026 18:40

As long as they don't get rid of the mcplant, that would be tragic!

The veggie dippers we got were pesto flavored, and seemed to be just so they could use them in a wrap, 2 in a bun instead of a burger patty, or dippers on their own. My veggie son would get the happy meal and I'd have the dippers as he doesn't like them, not sure what we'll do now as I'm not buying meat

Catladywithoutacat · 28/01/2026 18:42

There are loads of vegan options they can do but maybe it’s due to cost

MaggieBsBoat · 28/01/2026 18:42

I secretly love a McPlant burger (because obviously one cannot admit it in front of the vegan police - I am vegan btw) but here in Germany you can’t get them for the last few months. Rubbish.

edit to add, maybe they will get rid in the UK too. You’ve been warned 😧

Honestly, I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I gave up being a vegetarian in 2019, at the peak of the vegan era. There was nothing nice to eat; cheese disappeared. I don’t want to eat fake meat or fake dairy. It’s also full of chemical and additives.

So I eat shellfish, fish and limited meat from the butcher now.

tilypu · 28/01/2026 18:43

Seems like you think they did the right thing in axing them, op!

(Yup, I'm deliberately missing the point. But having been veggie in the 1980s, I promise you, things are much better now!)

That sucks. I’m not very clued up on allergens - what options would you hope McDonalds would stock for you? I’m assuming nothing that looks too much like anything that contains gluten in case of mix ups?

Even gluten free buns could make every burger option naturally gluten free!

The risk of CC in the kitchen is the reason they dont offer GF, not the buns themselves.

Lmnop22 · 28/01/2026 18:50

Furlane · 28/01/2026 18:33

Same, but I don’t really care as I wouldn’t eat there. I’m not sure a company that makes their money from primarily selling meat (and god knows the rearing conditions) would be one I would look to go to if I was a vegan (I’m not) anyway.

When I take the kids for an occasional treat, it would be nice to be able to eat something but I get that’s it’s probably too much effort when they make billions without catering for allergens!

You’re probably right. It’s a shame as one small grill area separate from the rest would do it!

Changename12 · 28/01/2026 18:53

I would have thought that the last place any vegan would eat is McDonalds.

whiteroseredrose · 28/01/2026 18:55

It’s all about economics. We are 2 vegans, a vegetarian and a meat eater and McDonalds would never be an option for us even if they had lots of vegetarian and vegan options. DC didn’t like McD even when they ate meat. Most vegans I know wouldn’t eat there either. So why produce something that often goes to waste?

Definitely. It sounds like they should definitely be looking at the batter options.

Haha yes, they most definitely did!

But to not replace them with either a mini McPlant or fake chicken nuggets is gutting for us who like to eat McDs as a treat. Luckily my kids are getting closer to the age of wanting food from the main menu but no happy meal option at all for vegetarians is disappointing.

Edited

Reallly?! Why would they do that?!

We go monthly and between the 5 of us, spend ~£40. We wouldn’t go if they got rid of the McPlant burger. And I’m assuming we’re only one of many families that only consider it as it caters for all of us.

They estimate around 14% of the population eat a meat free diet now. I realise perhaps half of them wouldn’t eat McDs due to ethics and tastes but surely there’s enough of us to continue making the McPlant at the very least? (I so hope so!)

Why would a vegan or vegetarian go to a burger joint?

Same here - they eat the chips and an ice cream, I eat their (quite yucky but I can’t turn down food) dippers. but at least Incan trick myself into thinking they may eat them.

Now with no options, we can’t order happy meals, like you, I won’t be ordering (and wasting) meat.

They don’t care about catering for the minority - I have coeliacs and can literally only eat fries and drinks and fruit bags…

McDonald's is actually quite good for coeliac. My DS has coeliac disease and he often eats mcds - you can have most burgers without the bun, fries and hash browns. We've never had any problems with cross-contamination

It’s good to know you’ve had no cross contamination issues - I’m always nervous about bun free burgers prepared where the normal burgers are! Maybe I’ll risk it next time ❤️

Unfortunately this thread will now fill up with people so desperate to prove something on an anonymous forum. What is the point of endless posts pretending you never eat it.

Op I agree that the spicy vegetable sticks were an odd choice especially for a happy meal. They could have chosen something much more likely to sell, like vegan nuggets.

I bet McDonald's make these decisions lightly and give no thought to the commercial outcome and what is "likely to sell".
