Do you have your birthday off work?

Sorry a very boring AIBU but I am just curious as I have never experienced companies giving you the day off work for your birthday but my DP thinks its standard as thats what he is used to.

My DP gets a day of annual leave for his birthday every year, if it falls on a weekend he gets the following Monday off, I have never known anyone else who gets this so I am just curious as to whether its as common as he thinks or as uncommon as I think.

So do you have your birthday off work?

If voting YABU - you also get the day off
YANBU - you don't get the day off

I never have had this but I’ve seen a few places offer it as a perk - usually tech/fintech type places.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 26/01/2026 15:44

No, but I have used a day of my usual A/L entitlement for it in the past, if we're away for my birthday or something.

pimplebum · 26/01/2026 15:45

No never , I wish !
Jehovah witnesses would get shafted

Ladybugheart · 26/01/2026 15:45

I always take the day off but I don't get it as a perk. Company my parents run gives staff day off for birthday.

Alcoholrecovery · 26/01/2026 15:45

Adorable- but no not normal

UninitendedShark · 26/01/2026 15:45

Not in my current job, but I book it off with AL. In one previous job I did. It was a perk of working there.

naemates · 26/01/2026 15:47

My work make a fuss over birthdays and my DH not so much, so I’d be sad to miss it!

tsmainsqueeze · 26/01/2026 15:47

I do , been there a long time and it was introduced about 4/5 years ago , Fri or Mon off if b.day one weekend day.
We alk work hard for our company and I feel appreciated with this v
gesture.
More should do it.

Generallychill · 26/01/2026 15:47

I just book the day off as does almost everyone where I work but its not a perk.

SquigglePigs · 26/01/2026 15:48

My company doesn't, albeit I always book it off anyway!

DH has worked for 4 different companies and only one has offered that perk.

ThatWasMyLastFatFreeFrush · 26/01/2026 15:48

No. I work in a school.

DavidRosesEyebrows · 26/01/2026 15:49

No I don't get my birthday off. We get the King's birthday off though, that's pretty good

user2848502016 · 26/01/2026 15:50

No! I used an actual day of annual leave for my 40th but I usually just work it if it’s a weekday

dadtoateen · 26/01/2026 15:51

Hi, I give all my staff there birthday off fully paid, on top of the annual holiday allowance.

If it falls on a weekend, they can either have the Friday or Monday off

Just seems a nice thing to do...

Pollqueen · 26/01/2026 15:54

Not my firm although I am seeing this more as a perk in job adverts. Corporate law

I always book day off though, damned if I'm working on my birthday, but have to take a/l

Thingsthatgo · 26/01/2026 16:01

I work term time only, but my boss lets me have my birthday off (paid) he also brings me cakes and presents. My job is not brilliantly well paid, but there are a lot of perks!

That's so nice!
I am very jealous of those who get the day off 😁

We get this - Big 4

TeenYearsAreBrutal · 26/01/2026 16:03

As long as it’s used ‘around’ the birthday date, it’s flexible too - mainly so we can still deliver for clients as needed!

familyissues12345 · 26/01/2026 16:04

Nope. I do know of companies that give you your birthday off though

gototogo · 26/01/2026 16:04

No, never heard of such a thing and it would annoy me at them mandating that one day of annual leave has to be taken for your birthday, just add it to the annual total and let individuals decide

Think you will find that most business's that give them the day off is above the annual leave..

Otherwise you would just book the day off as usual.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 26/01/2026 16:14

DH started his company from scratch. There were 3 of them when they began 25 years ago and now there are more than 200 staff and he doesn’t know them all well anymore. He formed a working party which has staff from every level of the company and they collect “happy staff” suggestions and this was one of them so now everybody gets their birthday off. They’re hardly a multinational so can’t afford to do every suggestion but these sort of things can show staff that they are valued. It seems to be appreciated.

DappledThings · 26/01/2026 16:14

No. Lots of people book the day off but it's a normal annual.leave day. I hate my birthday and never mark it at all. I'd be annoyed to be getting a day less of leave because of that.

Growlybear83 · 26/01/2026 16:16

I always booked a day’s annual leave for my birthday when I was working and since I’ve been self employed I arrange my work so that I can take the day off.
