Do you have your birthday off work?

Sorry a very boring AIBU but I am just curious as I have never experienced companies giving you the day off work for your birthday but my DP thinks its standard as thats what he is used to.

My DP gets a day of annual leave for his birthday every year, if it falls on a weekend he gets the following Monday off, I have never known anyone else who gets this so I am just curious as to whether its as common as he thinks or as uncommon as I think.

So do you have your birthday off work?

If voting YABU - you also get the day off
YANBU - you don't get the day off

Yes I do - I work for a large corporate. If I can’t take my actual birthday then I am supposed to take it in my birthday month. So I get 27 days AL plus birthday leave, plus bank holidays.

WonderingWanda · 26/01/2026 19:30

I've never heard of this being an extra day but I know people who always take annual leave on their birthday. Nothing unreasonable about that. I'm a teacher so get no choice over when my leave occurs. So I get lucky some years and have a weekend birthday.

Therandomtrekker1 · 26/01/2026 19:49

I never did when I worked for the civil service, my younger sister has moved to a company that gives you a day off on the week of your birthday,( they make sticky plasters )

Joey1024 · 26/01/2026 19:52

I do and have done at the last 3 companies i worked for so i thought it was standard practice!

gamerchick · 26/01/2026 19:57

I don't get it but I take the week off for my birthday. It's my treat to myself.

BeefAndHorseradishSandwich · 26/01/2026 19:57

We don’t get the day as an extra so I just take it off anyway.

I book my birthday off if it falls on a work day, using my annual leave. DH and I book each others birthdays too so that we wouldn't be on our own. We also book a day for our Wedding Anniversary to spend together. I find it odd when colleagues don't, unless it is in a peak leave period when they might not get it approved. The only friends I have who regularly work their birthdays are teachers, who have no choice if their birthday is in term time. I suppose I might not do this if I worked somewhere that only gave the legal minimum of leave and very likely not if my employer required leave to be taken in whole weeks, as I understand some employers do.

See thats the issue we have because DP will complain i don't take the day off to be with him but I have to save every ounce of annual leave for school hols.

I worked at Woolworths back in the day, they always gave you your birthday off, paid. I’ve always taken my birthday off as annual leave since, with other employers

JWs don't acknowledge their birthdays so wouldn't get the extra day off. I once knew some JW children who didn't know when their birthday was, and if you asked their age would say 'I'm 6 1/2 and I'm nearly 7 1/2'.

That's quite extreme, some of my fanily members are JW's but I dont think they'd complain about getting their birthday off, just because they get it off doesn't mean they have to celebrate.
That's crazy the kids dont at least know when their birthday is.

Never, in thirty years of working in many different companies. If I want it off I have to take it as annual leave. So does everyone I know.

i actually saw it in a job ad the other day listed amongst the perks, and it was the first time I’d ever heard of it. Seems a lovely idea to me.

IHadaMarvelousTimeRuiningEverything · 26/01/2026 20:05

In a previous job I did. We also used to get a Christmas shopping day off too. This was at a law firm about 12 years ago.

Wildhairdonotcare · 26/01/2026 20:07

I had a friend years ago who used to get the Christmas week off work as they shut their office down, I cant remember for the life of me what he did but I was always very jealous he never had to use annual leave for that!

We do. We let people take it roughly around their birthday, so if they're going on a weekend break the next week or whatever they can use it then. It's basically just an extra day's annual leave, although I'd say 80% of people use it for the actual day itself.

I get that. University admin. Closed from about the 23rd to the 2nd Jan every year with a bit of give and take plus 2-3 extra days at Easter.

Babanafroufrou · 26/01/2026 20:25

I'm always off but my birthday falls in half term and I work in a school.

caringcarer · 26/01/2026 20:29

Ha, My birthday is towards the end of August. I have never been to a school, college, uni or work, as a teacher, on my birthday in my life. I am always on holiday on my birthday.

828Pax · 26/01/2026 20:44

DH used to work for company that did this

Mrstawnyowl · 26/01/2026 20:54

I’m NHS admin and I had my last birthday at work for the first time in a few years. It was a Wednesday. It made a nice change to be in actually,

tigger1001 · 26/01/2026 20:57

We get the day off. Was introduced about 3/4 years ago as a perk

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 26/01/2026 21:53

I wish! Today is my birthday. I m 58. Had to do a whole school day as usual as nobody would have been able to cover.

But it was actually OK. Got a cake in the staff room and a pretty easy day

MirrorMirror1247 · 26/01/2026 21:57

I've never worked anywhere that's offered this, but there have been times I've used AL for it! I don't understand adults who don't celebrate their birthdays. Life is short, take any excuse to enjoy yourself!

The company I work for close down for 2 weeks over Christmas and the new year with no AL needed. T’is delightful! We’re a construction/Maintenence company.

IDontHateRainbows · 26/01/2026 22:07

I dont get it off but I take it off from a/ leave as I refuse to work on my birthday. Day trip to London this year!

LookingThroughGlass · 26/01/2026 22:18

We don't get given the day but I take it using annual leave.

I’ve never worked anywhere where we didn’t get that week off! Charity sector.
