Do you have your birthday off work?

Sorry a very boring AIBU but I am just curious as I have never experienced companies giving you the day off work for your birthday but my DP thinks its standard as thats what he is used to.

My DP gets a day of annual leave for his birthday every year, if it falls on a weekend he gets the following Monday off, I have never known anyone else who gets this so I am just curious as to whether its as common as he thinks or as uncommon as I think.

So do you have your birthday off work?

If voting YABU - you also get the day off
YANBU - you don't get the day off

I book my birthday off if it falls on a work day, using my annual leave. DH and I book each others birthdays too so that we wouldn't be on our own. We also book a day for our Wedding Anniversary to spend together. I find it odd when colleagues don't, unless it is in a peak leave period when they might not get it approved. The only friends I have who regularly work their birthdays are teachers, who have no choice if their birthday is in term time. I suppose I might not do this if I worked somewhere that only gave the legal minimum of leave and very likely not if my employer required leave to be taken in whole weeks, as I understand some employers do.

Yes in current company. Tech firm. Not the usual though never had it anywhere else

Boxbelle · 26/01/2026 16:58

Boxing day...generally not a great day for a birthday but has some advantages 😊

50NotFat · 26/01/2026 16:59

I always book the day off. It’s a big one this year though so I’m taking the whole week!

GnomeDePlume · 26/01/2026 16:59

Extra day on top of annual leave and has to be taken within 1 month of actual birthday. I like it.

DramaAlpaca · 26/01/2026 16:59

I'm not given the day off with work, but it's close to a bank holiday so I sometimes take the day as annual leave.

LiveLuvLaugh · 26/01/2026 17:01

I always take it off ,but I have to book a day’s leave.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 26/01/2026 17:01

We get a half day off that we can take a week either side, I think. I use it because it's there but at other workplaces without it, I felt no need to take my birthday off.

yeesh · 26/01/2026 17:01

I usually book it off but we don’t get it as standard.

Judellie · 26/01/2026 17:13

Not exactly but it's New Year's Eve and my work have it as a stat day for everyone, so everyone gets the day off. Including me but not because it's my birthday!

winnieanddaisy · 26/01/2026 17:16

I retired a long time ago but I was a nurse and I seldom got Christmas Day off never mind my birthday . I wasn’t bothered about requesting the day off for my birthday though . It didn’t occur to me to book it off for my children’s birthdays either . They’re all over 50 now and are still speaking to me so they couldn’t have been too bothered either 😂

JustGiveMeReason · 26/01/2026 17:17

Never worked anywhere that does that, but I have met someone once who worked for a company that did.

I mean, I think if my employers want to give an additional day of AL, I'd rather have the choice of when I take it than be made to take it on one particular day each year.

CrushedEggShells · 26/01/2026 17:19

Only 1 company that I worked for has offered a paid day off for everyone's birthday.

Good perk

MissCalamity · 26/01/2026 17:20

Yes, we get an extra days leave for our birthday, if we've been with the company for longer than a year. This was added onto our benefits about 5 years ago.

MTOandMe · 26/01/2026 17:20

Only one place I have worked that did this was Lunn Poly!

SisterMaryLuke · 26/01/2026 17:22

My husbands firm do this - construction.

Thewonderfuleveryday · 26/01/2026 17:22

I always book it as annual leave.

OSTMusTisNT · 26/01/2026 17:23

No, don't even get to take it as annual leave, similar to my wedding anniversary and kids bdays that all fall at embargoed times of the year.

Good old public sector 🙄

NoSoupForU · 26/01/2026 17:24

Yes we get it. It can only be taken on your birthday though, not tagged onto your annual leave quota. And obviously you only get it when your birthday falls on a working day. People have complained about both conditions, quite unbelievably.

browneyes77 · 26/01/2026 17:27

I’ve always had to book my birthday off work from my annual leave. I’ve never been given it as a freebie.

That is until last year, when my boss got the green light to let us have our birthdays off as a freebie going forward. Which I was happy about!

Verytall · 26/01/2026 17:28

My DH works in the corporate sector and one or two companies have done this, not the majority - it's been sold as a 'perk' but I wouldn't say it was much of a perk because the jobs he's in tend to have very poor annual leave offers. So it'd be pretty much statutory minimum leave + ooh look we give you your birthday off!

The poor annual leave seems to be because companies tend to be relatively small and rely heavily on team/project work so covering and managing deadlines is tricky. I know it should be better managed but it's always been that way in his industry.

landlordhell · 26/01/2026 17:28

In education so no as my birthday does not fall in the holidays. Neither does DH or either of my two DDs who work in the private sector. Never heard of this .

Snorlaxo · 26/01/2026 17:29

I don’t but my adult son does. I imagine that it depends on the sector too. Retail often has annual leave embargoes in November/December and wouldn’t want staff off.

Why is that unbelievable? Otherwise some people are getting a perk others aren't.

EmmaStone · 26/01/2026 17:30

No, we've talked about it at senior team level, but decided it would be an issue for staff that often work away, they'd then have to take a day in lieu, and it kind of defeats the object of having your actual birthday off. We do get gifted an extra 2 days around the Xmas break, however.

My birthday tends to fall towards the end of the holiday calendar, so if I've got any AL left, I take the day off.
