Do you have your birthday off work?

Sorry a very boring AIBU but I am just curious as I have never experienced companies giving you the day off work for your birthday but my DP thinks its standard as thats what he is used to.

My DP gets a day of annual leave for his birthday every year, if it falls on a weekend he gets the following Monday off, I have never known anyone else who gets this so I am just curious as to whether its as common as he thinks or as uncommon as I think.

So do you have your birthday off work?

If voting YABU - you also get the day off
YANBU - you don't get the day off

Yes - an extra day of leave to use in the week window across your birthday. I think staff morale was low when they introduced it and it was a quick easy win. We get a decent gift too

YetAnotherAlias62 · 26/01/2026 17:31

We get it if our birthday is on a normal working day.
When my birthday falls on a weekend/bank holiday, no - I don't get an extra day off.
Note - this wasn't official company policy, just something that our director thought would be a nice thing to do

Catladywithoutacat · 26/01/2026 17:31

No don’t bother anymore unless it’s a Friday

largeprintagathachristie · 26/01/2026 17:32

Birthday leave is a new policy just in at my work - I’m 54 and this is the first time I’ve come across it.

We’ve had no pay rises for two years so suspect it was an attempt to raise morale/aid retention.

Clefable · 26/01/2026 17:32

Yes we get a birthday day off after being with firm for a year. It’s great! If it’s a non-work day you can take it on a day either side too.

MajorProcrastination · 26/01/2026 17:42

Not a thing at any of my jobs ever BUT I do book it off as annual leave every year! It's in December so I go to a Christmas market with my parents and sister.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 26/01/2026 17:45

I’ve worked at a couple of places that offer this. I’ve even been allowed to have the day after my birthday off, so I can go out and enjoy myself and sleep in the next day!

Why is that unbelievable? Otherwise some people are getting a perk others aren't.

Everyone gets the perk of having a working day off when their birthday falls on a working day. Nobody has more birthdays than anybody else.

TheChosenTwo · 26/01/2026 17:46

I don’t but know a few whose employers offer this as an incentive. I think it’s nice but we get a really generous holiday allowance as it is so no complaints, I’d book my birthday off if I wanted it. I mostly work but took my 40th off.

Sensiblesal · 26/01/2026 17:57

Worked for a few companies who have given a day off for your birthday or next working day as a perk on top of your annual leave. Had one where you got the day for your birthday but could take it whenever. Think both of those gave you like a day off in December so you could have a day off for Christmas Shopping. I know it sounds ridiculous! These jobs were when you got good job perks to attract top staff whereas in recent years with all the cost cutting everything is minimal and the same

current job we get additional days to use whenever which is not included in our annual leave

What if your birthday isn't ever a working day because it's a bank holiday? What if you just don't particularly like your birthday but you do like having additional annual leave you can use at any time? Totally reasonable to query I'd say.

capybaraforlife · 26/01/2026 18:32

I've had it as a perk in various companies over the years. Now I'm in one that doesn't offer it. I always book it off. I highly recommend it!

muckandmerriment · 26/01/2026 18:42

I work for a local authority. We get an extra day at Christmas and a day for our birthday every year, or the nearest working day to it. We don't get many perks so those are nice to have!

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 26/01/2026 18:53

We did, small family company, but not now we have been bought out by a multi national company.

DisforDarkChocolate · 26/01/2026 18:54

I take my Birthday off but it's never been a work perk.

HS1990 · 26/01/2026 19:00

Yes I have had it in last 3 jobs. 2 x tech companies and 1 x ecommerce.

Nourishinghandcream · 26/01/2026 19:05

I was never given my birthday off but would book A/L to make sure I was off.

My OH gets an additional day for birthday which while it could be taken whenever he likes, he gets priority if he wants his actual birthday off.

cupfinalchaos · 26/01/2026 19:14

TheodoreisntBeth · 26/01/2026 16:45

JWs don't acknowledge their birthdays so wouldn't get the extra day off. I once knew some JW children who didn't know when their birthday was, and if you asked their age would say 'I'm 6 1/2 and I'm nearly 7 1/2'.

Wow! Thank you.

No never , I wish !
Jehovah witnesses would get shafted

Why? They still have a birthday and presumably could take it off if they want. They choose not to celebrate it.

Re the OP in my current and previous job yes we get the day off for our birthday

ShetlandishMum · 26/01/2026 19:16

Never heard of it.

ZoomPup1 · 26/01/2026 19:18

Yes. I’m a supply teacher so just make sure I keep my birthday free 🥳

Geronimode · 26/01/2026 19:19

V common in Media agencies & tech

GingersOwner26 · 26/01/2026 19:21

I don’t get it automatically (unless it happens to fall on a bank holiday; it’s a date where that’s possible) but I do tend to take it as leave because it’s generally a quiet time at work for me.

StripedVase · 26/01/2026 19:26

Had no idea this was a thing!

ladymalfoy · 26/01/2026 19:28

Luckily I'm a teacher and my birthday is always in one of the school holidays.
