DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

Penguins are shite. They're essentially a low level copy of a bourbon biscuit with a meagre chocolate flavoured coating.

Waste of calories!

UncannyFanny · 19/01/2026 18:18

I read they have to call them chocolate flavoured now because the cocoa content is so tiny it isn’t allowed to be called chocolate anymore

berightorbehappy · 19/01/2026 18:21

Before marriage : ahhh..that’s so cute !
After marriage : weird fuc*er stop now before l crack up !

Are there more things about him you dislike ? Penguins feel quite uncontroversial x

AppUser · 19/01/2026 18:22

Every British household definitely doesn't have a packet of Penguin. Especially nowadays when the chocolate content is so minimal that the manufacturer is calling it "chocolate-flavoured bars".

You probably read that on this very thread

I came back from Aldi today with a pack of Seals, I’ve never even seen them before so this thread is definitely to blame. I shall you in the 8pm club.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/01/2026 18:25

We always had Club biscuits, when I was a kid - and dsis and I could take off the wrapper and the foil, remove the biscuit, and fold the wrapper up to look like it was still full, then give it to dad, as a joke. We played this prank many times, and he always laughed.

WimbyAce · 19/01/2026 18:26

I used to have one in my school lunch box 30 plus years ago but I can't say I've had many since then 😂

MoChan · 19/01/2026 18:27

I'm going to start buying Penguins right now.

Whyamiherenow · 19/01/2026 18:28

Be careful! At one of those places where children can make their own lunchbox. DS selected a penguin biscuit. There were tears when he realised it wasn’t shaped like a penguin!

Single50something · 19/01/2026 18:32

I dont but might have to add some to the online shop now.

Single50something · 19/01/2026 18:34

Added to the online shop...also on special at ocado !
I didn't even know rhey did other flavours

MayeJane4 · 19/01/2026 18:35

I think this is the first MN post I have ever read that has actually made me laugh out loud 😂

ApocalypseNowt · 18/01/2026 17:43

Team DH. We always have penguins, clubs or kitkats in.

🙌
We always have time out roundies , purple snack bars of Nutella biscuits 😊

Bunchymcbunchface · 19/01/2026 18:36

I’m sworn off them since they had to add ‘chocolate flavour’ to the pack as there’s not enough chocolate in them to legally be Called a chocolate bar. (Btw Club’s are the same, they old slogan of ‘if you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit join our club’ no longer applies)

annemac101 · 19/01/2026 18:37

I think years ago in the sixties and seventies every home would have a packet but there are much nicer biscuits now. My dad worked in the factory for years that made them. He used to bring home a brown paper bag full of misshapen and broken penguins which they sold cheap to staff, I grew to hate them. No I dont understand your husband's obsession with them. I think there are much nicer biscuits ..like caramel wafers.

gingerninja · 19/01/2026 18:37

This is me with KitKats, life long obsession. I have at least one 2 finger KitKat a day and if I don’t get it I will think about it until I do. Penguins are inferior in my mind.

Isntiticonic · 19/01/2026 18:38

I did like penguins, but recently heard that they were bourbons covered in chocolate, all I can taste now is a bourbon covered in chocolate, sadly this has ruined my penguin experience. I've also tried Tim tams and they are lush!

BlueJuniper94 · 19/01/2026 18:38

Bubobubo · 18/01/2026 17:44

I don't believe every household has a packet of penguins in.

Have you ever tried biting both the ends off and drinking a hot drink through it. Could that open your mind to enjoying an 8pm penguin once in a while?

Like a TimTam slam? I'm just at the beginning of the thread and don't have time to read through, but can you confirm this works with Penguins?! I haven't had one for years, might be time to get some in

Pallisers · 19/01/2026 18:39

Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration.

This reminds me of my parents' favourite joke (they were married 50 years). A woman applies for a divorce after 30 years of marriage. The judge asks her why she wants a divorce. She says "well for 30 years he has come downstairs every morning and said "Ah, coffee!" "Divorce granted" the judge says.

ColdWaterDipper · 19/01/2026 18:43

I can’t stand the little buggers - they aren’t a patch on kitkats! Really though I like the little tiny Kinder chocolate bars as that’s what I grew up with.

We almost never have penguins in, although if they are on offer in Tesco I might get a pack - it’s occasional though as usually they are pricey for essentially a fairly non-chocolatey chocolate biscuit.

OP, I HATE you !

Somehow a pack of Timtams jumped into my Ocado online basket earlier. Then I read more posts and if I have to make any more changes I might just pop a pack of Border Dark Choc Ginger thingummies in…..

Then Single50something tells me Penguins are on offer at Ocado..... FFS.

‘Grape, why are you not loosing weight ?’

‘Those nasty Mumsnetters are MAKING me eat bad things’

YANBU, OP

FunnyOrca · 19/01/2026 18:44

“plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet”

What does this mean? Is he going to make a penguin out of the penguins? That would be the perfect amount of tacky!

I think yabu. I never get offered an 8pm penguin. I’d love one.

OneKeenPeachRaven · 19/01/2026 18:45

DH and I are mid-40s and we both agree we've never knowingly purchased a pack of Penguins.

CremeCarmel · 19/01/2026 18:45

They really are a perfect snack though. Biscuity and chocolatey with chocolate filling too. P-p-p- pick up a penguin! Sales are going to go through the roof now.
