DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

I can't abide Penguins and NEVER had them in my house. My parents didn't either. We were all about KitKats, Blue Ribands, Clubs and Trios when I was a kid. Rocky bars were a revelation when they came out haha!

MummyMags3 · 19/01/2026 17:49

No Penguins here.

Worldwide2 · 19/01/2026 17:51

This is hilarious 😂 🤣

But to answer your question no we don't have penguins in our household. I can honestly say I haven't eaten one since I was at school and im now in my 30s.

WhitePudding · 19/01/2026 17:51

Never have a Penguin in but I think there are Tim Tams floating about as ds loves them and buys them with his own money.

JoannaTheYodelingCowgirl · 19/01/2026 17:52

Would you like a Penguin OP?Grin

JoannaTheYodelingCowgirl · 19/01/2026 17:53

Also your husband is definitely unreasonable,

TimTams are far superior (my Australian husband first introduced them to me when i visited his family down under and im so glad they sell them in this country now)

OneBlueFinch · 19/01/2026 18:00

Pppppick up a Penguin. 🐧

Summersongroses · 19/01/2026 18:05

Please tell me I’m not the only one…. I saw a packet of Penguins for £1 in Sainsbury’s today, this thread came into my mind and I couldn’t stop myself from picking a pack up! I’m looking forward to Penguin O’Clock at 8pm!!!!

Holdonforsummer · 19/01/2026 18:07

We had a bumper pack of penguins in last week (14) and they went in two days. They have shrunk, haven’t they?!

Morepositivemum · 19/01/2026 18:07

Why wouldn’t you have a plate of penguins at a party?! I#teamdh

TestTubeTina · 19/01/2026 18:08

Team TimTam here - I got stupidly excited when I first saw them on sale in my local supermarket. Penguins are flat, hard and can do one.

FerriswheelsKissesandLilacs · 19/01/2026 18:09

It's tacky to put out a plate of chocolate biscuits at a party? A children's party? 😟

This just seems like a huge overreaction to penguins.

luckymumandnowluckygranny · 19/01/2026 18:09

Sorry, I would only eat a Penguin, a Club or a Kit Kat if I were starving and there was literally nothing else. They are SO booooring. Just my opinion of course. I see them in the supermarket and think "do people actually buy these?" So he is wrong

Coloursingreydays · 19/01/2026 18:10

I have never had one in my life. And yes it will irritate me as well. And yes maybe I'm a snob but I wouldn't have it a table either.

Tarnishedbutton · 19/01/2026 18:10

Honestly I don't remember ever having one.
I probably did as a child but not in my living memory.

Runnermumof2 · 19/01/2026 18:12

Penguins are the best ! Also started cakes up on the £1 offer. Tell him Coop are also good at putting Penguin biscuits of offer regularly. Our house is also real penguin obsessed and the number of penguin plushies my 6 year old has is getting out of control

Daughterofthesea · 19/01/2026 18:12

Coeliac household so no penguins here

Haribomum7 · 19/01/2026 18:13

Hilarious, I am with you , they are not nice biscuits, was sure they had been discontinued and that’s weird 😂 He is probably keeping them in production. You should get him a tour of the factory for his birthday or one with his face on 🤣

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/01/2026 18:14

Aldi seal’s here. Mint

whackwhackoops · 19/01/2026 18:14

Sorry OP this has cheered me up today on blue Monday!! I can imagine how irritating it is with the obsession about the penguins. I bet you feel Iike yelling ‘Grow the fuck up!!!’ And shoving them in his face 😂

LouH1981 · 19/01/2026 18:14

Personally, I’d love someone to offer me a Penguin every night. I’ve been known to have a sneaky Penguin for breakfast sometimes. Although steer away from the caramel Penguins, I thought they were overrated. Anyway, let DH enjoy his Penguins!

Cranarc · 19/01/2026 18:14

Not Penguins, but Club is a particular favourite of DH. I like them too, but DH got quite unreasonably enraged when he caught me giving a Club to a builder along with a cuppa. Apparently they are sacrosanct treats for family only.

😂 😂

badfriend101 · 19/01/2026 18:15

I have a mint penguin (or a seal or artic bar depending on if I’ve been to Aldi or Lidl) every night. Also around 8pm or as close to after DC has gone to sleep. Always thought I was alone. Thank you for this post I feel seen 🤣

Anyusernamewilldo8963 · 19/01/2026 18:16

Thanks to this thread I actually bought some today when I saw they were on offer in Centra lol roll on 8pm! Want to join me and your DH @BettyWhittaker ? I'll read you the joke on mine 😂
