DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

Sorry for your predicament OP, but on the other hand thank you for making me proper laugh out loud for the first time in a while 😆

I love this so much.

No Penguins here - they wouldn't last five minutes but your DH needs that on a t shirt.

I don't believe every household has a packet of penguins in.

Have you ever tried biting both the ends off and drinking a hot drink through it. Could that open your mind to enjoying an 8pm penguin once in a while?

This. I have been doing this for years 😃.

LJ125 · 18/01/2026 22:16

We had a packet of penguins delivered with today’s online shop!

Bloozie · 18/01/2026 22:17

Ok… No we don’t keep Penguins in. They’re shit biscuits. We don’t keep any nostalgic wrapped chocolate biscuit bars in but if we did they’d be Kit Kats.

It would drive me fucking insane to live with someone who had made a biscuit bar such an integral part of his day and indeed whole personality. And his mother joining in would give me whole body cringes. I am very intolerant though.

I would have said a long time ago, stop with the Penguin thing. It isn’t funny any more. It is making me lose respect for you. Buy them, eat them, I don’t care - but stop going on about them. It’s not cute or quirky. It’s a bit pathetic. But again, I am very intolerant.

MrsCarson · 18/01/2026 22:19

All sounds a bit silly. No we have no penguins in the house, I don't think I've bought any for many years.

atamlin · 18/01/2026 22:23

I’m so sorry to laugh at this but I am. It sounds like a shared family quirk if if his mother is also rooting them out. My thoughts are with you at this dark time.

tripleginandtonic · 18/01/2026 22:23

Yabu, team.dh here.

malificent7 · 18/01/2026 22:25

Oh they are good though op. I might have to get a pack for old times sake.

Had to google as in Australia. Similar to a tim tam, but of course tim tams are better 🙂

Until this thread had never heard of Tim Tams. Are they the Australian version?

Fernticket · 18/01/2026 22:30

Is this for real?

Needaholiday21 · 18/01/2026 22:32

Having known many of my friends who have put up with the most horrendous, cheating, miserable, lying, drunk, ignorant, terrible fathers etc etc partners.. I think you should count yourself lucky you've got a good one who's most annoying characteristic is a weird love of a particular chocolate biscuit OP!

MamainWonderland · 18/01/2026 22:35

Fully expect to be banned for this but….penguins are horrible (biscuits not birds 🤣). So YANBU - LTB 😜😜😈.

coronafiona · 18/01/2026 22:35

Penguins are just bourbons dipped in chocolate. Or chocolate flavoured coating or something. So just get bourbons!

Yes and they come in a delicious dark chocolate version

Noshadelamp · 18/01/2026 22:38

No penguins here.

PhilOPastry62 · 18/01/2026 22:38

I love a penguin, me. I'm team DH all the way. When my DDs (now adults) were little I had to be very careful with money so we made do with Bourbon biscuits - not dissimilar to penguins, but much cheaper and nowhere near as nice. I couldn't afford to have a packet of penguins in the cupboard at all times, but they were a special treat. Now that I don't have to count the pennies in quite the same way, I always have a packet of penguins in. Perhaps your DH would like to call round?

Anyways, can't stay here chatting, it's time to have a penguin.

They are the cheap rip off

PhilOPastry62 · 18/01/2026 22:39

Oh, and I meant to say, I get very excited when penguins are on offer and I stock up. I never walk past a supermarket without popping in to check.

JayJayj · 18/01/2026 22:41

I caved and went and bought a pack 😂 £1 is Sainsbury’s, bargain 😂

Queenoftartts · 18/01/2026 22:41

Ooh I love penguins I always read the jokes on them. I love doing penguin tea with them makes them taste even more delicious. You could have a selection of everyone's favourites. Shouldn't just be him that has his favourites. Rocky's are good and those mcvities gold bars. Could get some party rings as there essential. 😂😂😂

Nancylancy · 18/01/2026 22:42

I'm absolutely adding penguins to my asda online shop this weekend!

Livpool · 18/01/2026 22:43

I’m not a huge fan - I do like an orange Club or a Rocky though

idontknowhowtodreamyourdreams · 18/01/2026 22:44

I often buy them as treats for the kids as a packet is v good value and they’re the ideal size for children!
